BLAME IT ON THE RAIN @ MISS LIBERTINE / SAT MARCH 7TH / LOL!

Post by obliveus »

The 80's were a time of enlightenment. Spandex, keyboard ties, big hair, bigger shoulder pads and more make-up than Britney after another bender. We all look back fondly on those days gone past, we all, um, er...who are we kidding?

The 80's were bad, we mean, really bad. Crap clothes we thought were cool, music more disposable than iPod mixes today and attitudes born out of excess all led to a shotgun death to put it all where it was meant to be...in our memories.

But because it went so fast, from time to time a shindig to celebrate all that was bad, yet good in a strange Darwinian way, is always reason to celebrate. So Miss Libertines has called on some well established club heads to drop some dirt the only way they know how. It's called 'Blame It On The Rain' and it's your 80's answer to all of your musical needs.

Every bomb from that era will be dropped by Hans-DC, Mafia, Obliveus & guests and we know you'll be there singing along or, at least, be there to throw checkered Vans at us to 'Hungry Like The Wolf'. Good times.

So make sure you leave Saturday March 7th free in your calendar and get down to Miss Libs to do things you'll definitely regret in the morning. Nuthin but a good time, innit?"

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN // SAT MARCH 7TH // MISS LIBERTINE // 48 FRANKLIN ST, MELBOURNE CBD // feat: HANS-DC, MAFIA, OBLIVEUS + MATHEW HERBERT // BOH!

Serious question...

Do ya'll count Blondie as 80's? Their best tunes were 78-79, but everyone says they were 80's. Hmmm....

80's philisophy.

tmnt was indeed early ninties, although eastman and laird musta had the concept developed in late eighties.

Nup.

Ignoring such major influences as Jamaican MCs, the Last Poets and James Brown, for me the first 'real' rap song is "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by the Fatback Band which came out in July 1979. It was released several weeks before "Rapper's Delight".

Blondie's 'Rapture' was released in November 1980.

Yeah, but Deborah Harry had the skills to pay the bills. I'd rate her with Yo Yo.

Question still remains though.

Were the men really at work or was the work just a state of mind?

I reckon their best song was 'Rip her to shreds' in 76.

Anyways if you play anything off 'Autoamerican' or their rubbish last album 'The Hunter' you will be fine coz they are eighties.

I will also allow you to play 'Call Me' from the American Gigolo soundtrack coz it was release in Febraruy 1980. :D

I sometimes forget that early 80's music is still considered contemporary around Brain's place.

Nup...

Tanya Winley - Vicious Rap - '79 propably earlier, the vinyl complilation does not show the original date, just the complilation date.

Don't really believe this rumour....Tanya Winley was the first female rapper. Brain, and you confirm or deny ????

Ah, that's a tough one Snowie.

Tanya Winley was definitely before Blondie but when Vicious Rap was actually recorded by Tanya is open to conjecture. It was officially released in 1980, after "Rockin' and Rhymin'" by Tanya and Paulette Winley in 1979, but the song's producer Paul Winley (who just happened to be Tanya and Paulette's dad) later claimed that Vicious Rap was actually recorded in 78 (although not released until 80).

Wikipedia has this to say about the controversy: "The label's erstwhile claim that "Vicious Rap" was recorded in 1978, making it the first hip hop to make it to the recording studio, is sometimes repeated, but the apparent improvement in technique from 1979's "Rockin' and Rhymin'" makes this likely a piece of historical revisionism."

Anyways I'm still going for "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by the Fatback Band as the first rap record.

And if you're confused about any of this just BLAME IT ON THE BRAIN!
