The home renovation thread...

Post by J Gal »

So Spherix and i have bought a house in country vic. It was Spherixs' family home. Been in the family for over 20 or so years. We've just starting doing renos (farkin hard arse work)... Pulling up carpet, painters coming in today. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat atm, or has done renos. Got tonz of questions. Will upload before and after photos shortly.

aside from the obvious of always allowing a generous 20% plus budget over your best estimate... not heaps, but went through a painful floor sanding operation, substantial replastering, electrics and quasi-underpinning work...

are you taking the skin off the walls?

Nothing compliments a well designed/renovated environment like good lighting ;)

in seriousness we're pulling up carpet, and i'm struggling to get the smooth edges off the stairs. we need to get this all done by next monday, as the floors are getting sanded and polished. Also struggling to decide on colours for painting. We're debating greys, dark greens and reds thru the house. Its an art deco house circa 1920s so we're trying to keep with that theme. right down to our furniture and light fittings. Its always nice to get more input on things like this!

stopping by the end could be hard tho, you'd probably just end up getting flung over the fence into the next house, haha.

Smooth edge is a bitch to get up in old floor, most of our tacs were rusted and shitty. I just ended up pulling as many out as I could and hit the rest in so the sander could go over them. Turned out OK.

Good luck and be careful of asbestos in old houses.

Cheers Mick

House is all brick, so i think the chances will be quite low... yeh the tacks are shit! there must be at least 100 in each stair.

Al smooth edges are the opposite of the name. They're bits of wood, with tacks sticking up, they go around the outside of rooms to hold carpet onto them.

yeah righto, i know what you mean now, perhaps use a crowbar or something similar to jam under the wood and leverage it up, you could also use a chisel and stick something under it to pivot. Once the wood is gone, buy yourself and angle grinder, that will make short work of the tacks, make sure you wear proctective eyewear though!

Oooh, luuurve art deco.

I'm a member of
http://www.artdeco.org.au/
don't know if you can get some ideas from there.

To choose colours i would be looking through original/restored pics to see what works.

Also check the web for lots of original art deco pics from Miami and Napier in NZ.

Its all just so beautiful, i'm so jealous.

1.strip out all 'old fashioned' original features
2.blonde ash timber laminate on all floors, just stick it over the old carpet
3.1 exposed beam to all rooms (non structural radiata pine in roughsawn finish)
4.acrylic carpet in bathroom to keep footsies warm in winties
5.reconstituted stone kitchen (feature piece) bench with round profile edging so toddlers dont bang heads.
6. put strange and forgotten painting in hallway because it looked bare before (and not as in bare lols)
7. consider a muted contemporary pallete, as recommended by the numpty colourblind colour specialist no hoper from the hardware shop paint company.
8. get a designer feature lamp (a knockoff tho)
9. stainless steel laminate to all appliances
10. coloured glass splashback, possible camo pattern sandblasted in
11. claw foot bath is a must, scented candles and massive attack cd playing in background for maximum relaximum
12. massssssive tv set into wall or on low trendy chocolate timber bench with dvd collection
13. look into 'green energy' then get a low emission 3 star fridge instead of insulating your roof, the insuation has no green stickers afaik
14. dont double glaze windows, it can stop the sun getting in properly.
15. door snakes to all openings.
