I hate all bars where you can't have a beer, ciggie and listen to the music at the same time. Miss Libs is good example. Oustide for smoke - no drinks and no music can be heard. Inside back room packed, empty beer but can hear music - no smoke. No offence intended, I generally don't go to many wack bars so its unfortunate that my example is a place that mates work/ play. go to.

I love Miss Ls.

I like E55, Workshop, Order of Melbourne, Chi, Section 8, the Lounge, Horse Bizarre, Blue Bar, Big Mouth, Night Owl...

Haven't found a place I dislike yet.

Espy sucks for international gigs, but for chilling at having a few brews it's not bad.

It's mainly the smoking ting that irls me TBH. Workshop is fine when its not raining.

The idea is to discourage smoking.

Why discourage smoking when it goes hand in hand with drinking. I spend way less on booze when I go to places where I have to choose between the 3 options of music, booze and ciggies.
Doesn't matter how good the beer is when you have to go down 6 flights fo stairs to have a ciggie.

miss L's only stops drinks outside when it is at capacity, for huge gigs. on other nights you can drink and smoke outside, but no tunes, your right.

i like the atmosphere/decor of the carlton club best out of any place in the city though the emos that go there are dubious.
roxanne is like 100 times better with the new smoking room...
also like workshop's vibe and outdoor bit too, the view of the skyscrapers is killer.

the ones i dont like - too many to mention, but anywhere the drinks are expensive and shit, the bar staff think they are uber cool and the security are fuckwits is fail.

favorites, roxanne, hi fi easily the best for gigs, miss l's, revolver (not city but yeah).

dislike escobar, the walking space on the first level is like two people wide and they cram it like sardines, but drinks are cheap. other than that, none really come to mind that i really despise

oh the fuckin tankerville... right up there with the Exford for post-party dawn drinks.

Still rate rooftop better most other venues in melbs for drinks. Love that view.

As far as gig venues go... I like Roxannes - just hate those fuckin stairs!

The Squirel knows..

I don't mind E55 sometimes for an afterwork rendevous.
Roxannes is good for gigs, and if there's an official smoking room/ area now - that's even better.
Hifi has good sightlines for seeing what's happening on stage, not sure about having to go back upstairs for ciggies and mingling with randoms passing by on the footpath.

Can't go past The Tote or Cherry Bar for rock'n'roll action.... possibly even Ding Dong and Bar Open to catch a decent band.

why? i was pretty underwhelmed goin there on satday, as a venue all its really got goin for it is the balcony!

too dark, sound bleed between rooms, SHIT awful expensive drinks in plastic cups.

and deep 11 is the same too, nothing different! disspointing imo.

Any new notable bars in the city for Friday night drinks?

Was a time when we would rock E55 every friday for a year. Now Workshop and Section8 and occassionally Libs are the standards if we are hooking up post work.

Anything else in the city reccommended for the right crowd post Friday styles?

Mate you should hit up Penny Blue - 2 Driver Lane Melbourne VIC 3000 - (03) 9639 3020
Open Weekdays 9am-1am; Sat 5pm-1am; also open Sun

I think its a mad place, they stock so many beers (incl kooi's) its not funny, real nice place the only thing is maybe the crowd is the "suite type" but check it out anyway. Its basically the first lane up Lt Bourke st just off Elizabeth St. Say hi to Dave the barman for me, hes a champ.

Looks interesting Fents - although their website is shitehouse.

Will have a look sometime, just not with the crew on a Friday night, imagine it would be suit styles.

Section 8 = FAVE!

Workshop be cool, still. Murmur is rad, as is Phoenix on Fridays when the fat American is in the mix. :wink: Still like Libs. All on Brunswick are cool, too.

Haven't been to one I dont like yet, but I only go to places I play. Too old!

all about the Welcome Stranger on Bourke :D

Would love to see a proper mashup at Section 8, shame there wasnt more people for Cotti there...Roc Raider there last year was immense! Cant go wrong with Workshop either. A gig at the Rooftop bar in the blazing sun would be heavy too

anyone been to the Butterfly club in South Melbourne? Very strange, but cool place for a random evening. Last time i went they were playing Horror film soundtracks all night and with the clientele and decor there it freaked a few of my friends out bad!

I'm from Sydney so I don't know if my opinion counts :P

But places that stood out to me were Horse Bazaar, Bimbos (the pizza is TOO good), Section 8, and this tiny little place I can't remember the name of, it was in some alley and most of the walls were completely bombed with tags.
[img=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3594/3396363249_780ffd8103_o.jpg].
And uh the middle of it looks like that haha.

Also vodka borscht and tears, guess that doesnt count as a bar but holy shit I drank a lot of vodka there haha.

Can't wait to get back down

I think the key is the combination of tunage/drinkage/smokage.

<rant>
If you can't do all 3 of these things at once, the formula is off. I mean really, smoking is legal, its a choice people are free to make and by exercising that right you have to forgo something else?

'Way of life' much? I mean, we're sending people to other countries to kill them to preserve our 'way of life' and we can't even char durries and bop?! Lunatics > Asylum.
</rant>

As such, Workshop, Roxanne and Mercat are good oh and don't forget Browners.
