Surface Resonance

Post by FoundationStepper »

Surface Resonance is the title of my Masters by Research - Sound Art, RMIT 'thesis' and projects...

The research program concerns vibration - how it is felt as sensation, and how low frequency vibration can create sound, by causing materials to resonate and vibrate.

Testing and composition has explored perception and engagement with vibration. It has also explored the referencing and abstraction of dub and related basslines in a non-musical context.

(Its an art project - gallery installation sort of thing, not music)

I am submitting my papers in an online way in the first week of Jan:
http://surfaceresonance.croakinglizard.com/

I thought people might be interested in my work. Or if you come across any coding or wording issues with the site please let me know. Its mostly wrapped up but I'll do some final tweaks over coming weeks. (note - it is best in firefox or safari - def not old versions of IE)

The Masters assessment is primarily through an installation/ presentation showing compositions applying a tactile table system, which engages the body directly with deep sensation. This text and media supports the evaluation of the works by giving body to the research program.

This website also enables other viewers to see the research process and findings around composing material for the body, and for using vibrating materials such as window panes and sheet metal in composition. These compositions are intended for gallery installation with the tactile table system.

Have you considered appending a subtitle to the thesis? Perhaps "Surface Resonance: Heavy Bass Riddims"?

Hmmm have thought about making the connection to riddim stronger but TBH the whole research trajectory has been more installation sound art than something explicit to the bass heavy music thing.

bass sensation in music, and the effects it has on spaces (buildings etc) has been more an inspiration than something I've ended up directly drawing from in the compositions etc

yeah sound art wankery yanno

nope - infrasound guns and soforth? kode9's book?

i need to read it i think, i did read a bit about infrasound weapons in the past but they were basically rubbish. (coming from a day job dealthing with noise I can pick apart a lot of crap arguments around infrasound) but im sure hes given it the proper treatment

maybe I can borrow after your done, if its not around locally?

update -

http://surfaceresonance.net

This site is for my recent, current and future arts practice. tried for a reasonably minimal design, using a hacked wordpress theme to make the whole job of building it soo much easier.

check out the silo sounds - http://surfaceresonance.net/places/silos

I will be performing a version of this recording (using four mic sources rather than just the two shown) at circle jerk - part of what is music?

http://www.whatismusic.com/?page_id=5

100 loudspeaker diffusion system - should be a lot of fun!

and really keen to know of similar industrial sites in melbourne!
