Novation Launchpad is a cheap-date.
Novation Launchpad is a cheap-date.
This USB beauty came out last year, fantastic price... and have seen it used pretty damn well in some vids. Small, light, can chain six at once to the same laptop!!
Only thing I'm wondering (after any latency stuff) is how assignable everything actually is (?).
Of course Novation says you can use it with any DAW software via internal MIDI assignment... but when I see it adjusting the volume or filter-cutoff in Ableton by running the finger up and down the columns, etc... I wonder if that functionality actually does work in other software.
Also, I'm not sure if the side buttons... which are deisgned to give you access to specific areas in Ableton... are assignable/of any use in other progs.
?? Anyone played with one yet ??

My opinion of the launchpad....
LOL.
APC40 is the ONLY controller for Ableton. You will soon get sick of the pretty matrix.

For its price, it's a great unit - no doubt.
But if it's an actual controller you want, and not just a matrix trigger - take a look at the APC40.
All well and good to run your finger up and down a bunch of cells, but I'd rather have the control of endless rotary encoders and faders.

Re: Novation Launchpad is a cheap-date.
Not sure, but I've ordered a Launchpad so I'll find out fairly soon. It may also depend on your DAW's MIDI Learn tweakability. The main trick is sorting out switching modes. That's where this little patch may come in handy.tactik wrote:Of course Novation says you can use it with any DAW software via internal MIDI assignment... but when I see it adjusting the volume or filter-cutoff in Ableton by running the finger up and down the columns, etc... Side buttons are assignable. See Novation Releases All MIDI Details for Launchpadtactik wrote:Also, I'm not sure if the side buttons... which are deisgned to give you access to specific areas in Ableton... are assignable/of any use in other progs.

Actually now that I remember, it does do all that and more, as it uses the Automap software.tactik wrote:Of course Novation says you can use it with any DAW software via internal MIDI assignment... but when I see it adjusting the volume or filter-cutoff in Ableton by running the finger up and down the columns, etc... I tried that patch tonight and it does work, but I can't really get into the feel of the pads for mlr type choppage. They're really more suited for launching clips and such (ie what it was designed to do). Just makes me want a real monome now.spiral wrote:some hacker tips

Akai Pro APC20 announced today. Should be RRP'ing for half that of the 40.
Soooo many good new products here at NAMM.
Full report to follow, but I'm sure all the tech-geeks already know all the goss.

Also, even though the monome is much better, they're expensive and almost impossible to get ahold of unless you want to build your own. You can walk into any music store today and walk out with a Launchpad for around $250 or so.

APC20 looks the business. much smaller footprint than the 40, still packed with most features.
