Re: bikes
did many riders see the story on 60 minutes last night- bikes vs cars - very agro!
magda szubanski and julia morris said cars should just run over cyclists. stupid thing to say but then they're both the most stupid non funny people going

Nice ride Aroes.
Just read the transcript - that's a bit silly what they are saying.
MAGDA SZUBANSKI (2009): I want to complain about cyclists in Lycra on Beach Road. What is that about?!
MAGDA SZUBANSKI (2009): I agree. Numberplate 'em, fine them. JULIA MORRIS (2009): No! No! Just drive and take 'em out.
MAGDA SZUBANSKI (2009): Just open the door! Open the door!
Amsterdam setup sounds perfect for cyclists.

Re: bikes
both good bikes
imo if you want a cool single speed, buy a frameset and build it up yourself.......might be a bit more exy, but if you do it right you'll have a one of a kind ride, massive street cred and your moustache will grow much thicker........i've seen a couple of those schwinns and the bianchis are everywhere
spend time finding the right frame at the right price, after that the rest should be quick and painless
my 2c
edit- if you don't mind me asking, what's your price range? if you want a complete bike that's a bit easier on the wallet Surly, Kona and Salsa all do nice single speed bikes that don't cost the earth

Re: bikes
Just want to say how amazing the Dutch system is. I'm living here for a while, and bikes are treated with respect here. In fact, it's all quite heavily weighed in favour of cyclists. The streets are small and cars drive very slowly, cars always give way to cyclists (even when they're in the wrong!) and everywhere you go there are bike paths. My hypothesis is that it's because everyone who drives ALSO rides a bike, so people are more sensitive to the needs of cyclists. I feel much safer here than I did riding in Melbourne.Feigan wrote:Nice ride Aroes.

Re: bikes
the whole us vs them thing is fucking abhorrent
these redneck fucks with a point to prove need to realise that most cyclists also drive a car......the universe doesn't revolve around you just because you are stuck behind a cyclist, they are not riding despite you
i was riding home from a mate's place at about 5.30am a couple of months back......some dickhead passed me way too close doing about 150 clicks, and the passenger threw a glass bottle which narrowly missed my head
really quite a hilarious stunt

Re: bikes
Can anyone recommend a good store, preferably in the northern suburbs, for gear? I need to get some shorts and a guernsey.
Nice range and price is what I'm after.

Re: bikes
Why do people in Melbourne wear lycra??? It's not as if the aerodynamics make a difference in traffic on your morning commute. It looks fucken ghey
Re: bikes
^ It's not just a melbourne problem Dan....
It's EVERYWHERE!
some benefits -
-- Draws or wicks sweat away from your skin so it evaporates quicker. This keeps you cooler in hot weather, and warmer in cold weather. Breathability is another term.
-- Related to the first point, cycling fabrics also dry very quickly, which can be a real plus if you are a bike commuter. In warmer months, my cycling clothes are often quite wet or damp when I get to work. I hang them over my frame or other things in my office, and they're dry in an hour or so. Cotton might not be dry by the end of the day if it's really wet.
-- Elasticity. Because most cycling fabrics stretch a bit, you can wear them closer to your skin or more form fit. This helps with the wicking and the next point, aerodynamics.
-- Wind drag slows you down more than anything else in cycling, so anything that improves your aerodynamics will help you go faster with less effort. Try ride with a loose flappy jacket and then a more form-fit cycling jacket. The difference is remarkable and could easily result in a difference in a couple miles per hour in your pace.
-- Finally most synthetic cycling fabrics can be dyed or impregnated with just about any color or design, and the colors don't fade. This allows for some "creative" designs that you might find attractive, loud or ugly depending on your taste. More importantly, cycling clothes can me made in very bright colors and designs that make you more visible in traffic.

And even if it was, to some people (particularly cyclists) - it looks fine.
Feigan's points ring true... not to mention the fact that I'm yet to see padded shorts that are non-lycra.

Would never wear under any circumstance... I'm not talking about a fashion show.. I'm talking about looking like a complete tool
Pro cyclists... yeah, I understand

Try sitting in a saddle with no padding on your cheeks and come back to me.
Don't be a hater Dan - not everyone worries about what you look like, and the people that do, well - they probably have more issues that you do.

If you're paying... I'm wearing!
That Guiness one looks awesome tbh!
I used to love the black Coors gear, beer's ordinary - but the clothing was slick...

Dude everyone you saw in Asia was on a two buck pub bike. Fucked if I'm gonna shell out thousands for a slick road bike and not ride it to its fullest potentialdeviant wrote:Traveled through asia a bit over the last few years... much more bikes... much less lycra

that's fine I guess if that's the way you feel, but for those of us that actually do have a penis, then lycra is a neccesary comfort issue for anything more than a short ride.deviant wrote:much more bikes... much less lycra
