Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
fuck knows wot 'futurebeat' is lol.
wonky is teh disliked term used to describe hiphop tempo instrumental electronica stuff - for want of a better description.
Its basically a ghey name made up by amricans to describe hiphop imo.
id say these are 'archetypal wonky' staggering unquantized beats. (hudmo, mikeslott, rustie)
but there is loads of stuff that could be called 'wonky' - from Flying Lotus to Take to Jay Dee etc.
rave varities --> downtempo
(not teh ghey banging 'flith lead bro, sick filteredddd sawtoof' electro house)
big funky percussive rave song

uk funky is what saemo plays now. its house music with a percussive / garagey led broeken beat flavour imo - again a pretty broad spectrum of tunes get reffered to as being or having 'uk funky sensibilities' umbrella term for new house musics.(not teh ghey banging 'flith lead bro, sick filteredddd sawtoof' electro house)

Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
I got in trouble the other day for confusing Uk funky with funky house.
but I am getting a lot of demos lately described as 'future beat'
and then when I listen to them, i realise that they are in fact 'future' sounds, but each one leans towards the genre said Dj usually plays...
so ive got hip hop djs giving me future beats with lyric based songs
techno djs giving me future beats with 303/808 sounds etc etc

Well im not a musician. But to me, its even more broken beat than anything before, there isnt a set bpm or a set 4/4 or anything, and its a mixture of sounds, so you can have all kinds of sounds in one track that make something happen, even more than before.nic wrote:but bo what exactly is it?

another good way to 'identify' future (i think i know what youre on about kittye) is too look out fo rth words and graphics contaiing 'neon' 'sparkling' 'laz0r' 'triangles/pyramids/sacred geometry' 'rainbow' 'psych' 'sun drenched'

Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
yup, id call that wonky. a bit too wonky for my liking. the appeal for me is definately half and half the sounds and arrangement, if i dont like the sound they are using then its kinda pointless, even if the beat is naice, yaknow?
one of my latest favorites in what I'd call 'future' choons. This guy makes me excited. I guess this is future dubstep, but Ive been slammed for incorrect genreising here before so ill just say - I LIKE THIS SHIT A LOT.

Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
getting to the point where genres are pointless now - thank fuck.
but i was all excited about 'future beats' till i got a demo from a techno dj - and it sucked. he was trying, but it just did not get there for me.
so yeh - more room for interpretation/fucking things up/doing something new and doing something boring.

I might be mistaken here, but my impression is that alot of the future tip seems to be the repackaging of warp style sounds to a crowd more open to abstract beats post dubstep explosion.
Also Om Unit is sick.
Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
Well I thought Wonky was something else entirely and something i had no interest in, but it turns out I've been playing it but I've thought of it as Glitch Hop.
I always thought of Future beats in relationship to Hip Hop being like relationship the abstract Jazz of Miles Davis/ John Coltrane had to its more commercial or swing form. I call it Electric Soul so the genre with "fututre" in it doesnt become redundant.
So yeah producers trying to push Hip Hop styled Sampled "Listening" music I'd call Electric Soul or Future Beats
And producers trying to do a similar thing but with "Dancefloor" music I'd call Glitch Hop or apparently Wonky.
I love Slugabed, Nosaj Thing, Mono/Poly, Dizz1, Bullion, Hudson Mo, Mike Slott and most of the other producers listed in this thread. Totally love that vibe right now.
Its so funny I didn't realize the name connection

Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
wonky is a bit of a weird one, got applied to a lot of zomby-ish dubstep with lots of colour and stuff (omg purple) and woozy, fucked percussion. then after the 19th 'is ketamine killing dubstep' thread on dubstepforum, it kind of petered out a little bit and got its own genre by co-opting glitch. so i guess they're more or less the same, but if there was a difference, i guess glitch would trend towards tearout sawteef breaks and wonky would tend towards fucked up stoner beats (dilla, flylo, etc)?

nic - that schlomo is boring to me, mnml with more pink floyd really!
i like the neon beams one though! really pretty sounds in there, but still ruff.
amick - that Dizz1 track is good, great sounds but its toooo sloooow for me....needs moar bpms
the bullion one is good, me likey. would sound amazing outdoors on a huge system - my marker for great music.
love the twippy sounds in there, and a nice comfy bassline to drive it all.
Gonjasufi - LOVE this. is this future hip hop then? really really like this stuff, its like Tricky should have been after pre millenium tension.
the mono/poly one makes me feel queasy and not good at all. dont like the sounds at all and they are all muddy and a little frightening!
and btw - what exactly do I know? I would like to know what I know for I often question of I know enough to even post in these music geek threads :notadj:
SDF1 - drone/ambient sounds like not my cuppa tea tbh heheh

kitte can also see how you think that Shlomo tune is boring, but in the context of a mix or rave it sounds good. stripped back drums bass and chords, makes a good change from teh tearout sounds that tend to dominate, can be heavy without lead sawtoof - just sub and drums. the tempo and style makes it playble with hiphop and sluggish banging slowhouse music which leads to better rave time.

yes i love ditching the labels, i have been trying to focus more on describing music my own way rather that having it fit in anywhere.
BUT...
You have describe music to people all the time. Its a natural phenom in music land. You cant play everyone 3 hours of music to describe "your sound" or even "the music i really like right now".
I like the way addittech lets you search for music, using key words. You dont even have to mention genres. I wish it all worked that way

Funky is pretty broad IMO. I dont think you will hear any of the dj's just play strictly funky tunes. They will all band tons of other house/garage etc etc. I think thats where the grey area is. But then i prefer alot of the tribal and latin house things rather than the grimey bits.fooishbar wrote:funky's funny too, it started off with a much heavier grime influence and now a lot of it is just shit house. but some of it is fucking GREAT imo. the ruder tunes with steel drums and grimey synth leads get a .

Re: Explain that genre, with guests Wonky and FutureBeats
i know its tricky and we use generalisations all the time, not just in music, I guess I just think that the majority of people (as in, not music geeks) write stuff off due to a genre label that may or may not be relevant.ShiKung wrote:yes i love ditching the labels, i have been trying to focus more on describing music my own way rather that having it fit in anywhere.
