Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
define Old School Breakbeat and how old are you?
Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
If you mean Nu-Breaks, no it's dead in Melbourne apart from an occasional "old school" set by someone who might have had something to do with Nu-Breed once at Brown Alley.

Howdy Colette.
Look up Lil Miss Breaks in members and maybe send her a pm; she does some banging sets when she plays from time to time.. Last time I saw her was (I think I remember correctly) she was on the bill with Stanton Warriors just b4 Xmas.

Rock Like This crew are the only dedicated Breaks crew left in Melbourne I reckon. They just threw a party at Brown Alley last friday with Aquasky and NAPT.

Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
Well seeing as she said old-school breakbeat i would assume she would be referring to the prejungle sound and the original jungle era... Not Breaks???
Anyway BBA have been kickin around the scene for years and have their party Jungle Fun 10 comin up soon, also so check out Mark N, Trooper, Hybrid, 1LC, Ruxpin, Lex if you can find em. Don't forget to check the hundreds of other heads that claim to be ol'school

Not so much, but plenty of new tunes that are heavily influenced by that rave era with more refined modern production getting releasedyouthful_implants wrote:So there's still people that play this stuff? wicked.

Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
Ah, the old school. I love. 2 levels imo, proper old school, 90's big beatish type breaks, then up until 05 with the fingerlickin funky breaks. Given the difference with the 'nu skool' of after 05, i see them as very very different sounds, under the same umbrella. Thats just me tho. Totally depends on how old you are, for sure.
@ bobby bob, indeed was an old school set at Stanton's!!!... my old school tho, so nothing after 05. Thanks for the reminder of that gig too btw, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt that was fun!
As Youthful posted, RLT are the breaks crew of Melb, with a lot of gigs at Brown Alley. Lounge will provide some here and there now.
Collete, you might need to be a bit more specific - are you hoping for a whole party of old school specifically, or some dj's that do it, etc etc. We dont have a dedicated old school breaks party. I wish we did thats for dam sure.

When the genre definition wars used to come up on ITM back in the day, I remember being pointed towards Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music. Just thought I'd post a link as it has been greatly improved upon since then - http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ (no guide will ever be completely accurate of course - this doesn't even go up to the present day - I don't think dubstep gets a mention)
Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
dubstep is a fair enough ommision...

Old school, nu school. Ah, those were the days. Occassionally I miss the breaks when I hear some of the old tunes.

I still listen to some of the old mixes I used to be obsessed with occasionally... "Krafty Kuts - Instant Party! Just Add People" was a favourite as well as a bunch of radio mixes from Freestylers, Adam Freeland, Freq Nasty (to name a few). Aahhh the memories!

Re: Old School Melbourne BreakBeat
I think it is, that was the year (1993) that the hardcore scene split into happy and jungle basically. randall and carl cox used to play that tune at the same parties mixed up with jungle techno and speeded up house.system wrote:that isn't pre jungle tbhyouthful_implants wrote:pre-jungle, as in UK hardcore?

before that you would get both being played at the same parties. dreamscape, elevation, roller express, desire
such fun days.

I was 17! everyone my age was going to raves and necking pills from 15 and 16.
This was, for me, one of the first hardcore jungle tunes from Tom and Jerry aka Four Hero the year before in 1992
with pitched up vocals, rave stabs and a totally jazzy rolling bassline it had an edgier, more melancholy vibe.

Would have loved to have been in London in my late teens during that period.

You miss out on all this stuff growing up in the country... Might not have been such a bad thing for my mental health though.
