You can, but javascript performance on ipads and phones etc is still pretty weak, especially when it comes to animations etc...

just tested smokescreen on the ipad here at work - the demo adverts work ok, but anything more complicated than that runs like a dog.
Most animations look really choppy with javascript on the ipad. I don't think smokescreen is a viable replacement for flash, at least at the moment.

tbh i get the feeling that your target market is less jaded beardo cunts on forums and more artists who want to feel the vibe/ethos, so we may not exactly be a usefully representative sample :teef: :actuallynoteef:

but i'd go html-only tbh

noteef. you'd be right :P

you would scrap all this work/time and $ for html only?

not gonna happen right now. or maybe ever.

it'll still be crap in flash - floating point calculations don't differ that much between the formats.

Re: iPad

hey guys...so ive got a quote from a new designer to fix/chance my website..
can you tell me if this is
a) a good option for the ipad/iphone fail of flash
b) a good price?

Working with Wordpress, we can make a site that is both easy to update, and displayable on other platforms such as Ipads, Iphones and other devices.

Stage one will involve the conversion of the site into a html/css version that will be able to display on different devices
and browsers with no elements being based in flash.
The site will be based of the original site, so the feeling and elements will be brought over to the new version.
• HTML/ CSS conversion from flash
• Wordpress integration which will
allow you to change text, photos, images and run the site automatically without you having the change code
• Slight changes in layout to accommodate for changes. How- ever most of the elements from the site will be carried over to the new site, and the look and feel will be maintained
• Photo gallery integration so you can upload photos using the backend CMS (wordpress)
• Video integration so you can upload using the backend CMS
• Resolution independent display which will use all of the browser screen
• Google Analytics (statistics) which will allow you to see how many people visit you site and from where they come
• Google webmaster setup to see how your site is preforming
Cost Breakdown
Each stage will be broken down into the
cost of production. Costs include GST.
Stage 1 - $ 1,500.00 (thats everything listed above)

The words make sense, and technically it sounds fine, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a good outcome. I think Wordpress would be good for you in terms of management, as long as the template is designed well.

I would make sure you have sat down and outlined exactly what you expect on the page and exactly which elements you are happy to sacrifice in the move from Flash.

In terms of money I have no idea, how many hours do they think it's going to take?

Also is it an iterative process, does the price include updates based on your comments after the first delivery?

As I said I don't deal with small jobs / designers / web design so not really my area of expertise.

Re: iPad

Post by ghetto kitty »

what do you mean it wont be a good outcome, you mean it wont look as good or I may not be happy with how many elements are lost in the conversion?

yeah, we have kinda done that, i said i want the front page to still be kitty etc, and i still want my handwritten menu,
that will be static on each page for easy navigation. galleries will be similar, and the blog bit will be after the homepage, which is good as right now, there is no reason to go back and visit my site much, but if im able to change the blog on the front section it will drive more traffic to it...

he said it will take around 40-50 hours, and that a corporate client would be charged more than double that, hes just come back from Os and needs cash while also wants to work on something creative...

not my area of expertise at all, hence asking you guys for any advice.

is there specific things you think i should ask him before agreeing apart from changes after initial stage 1 is complete?

Have you seen examples of his work, especially other Wordpress driven sites?

$40 an hour seems reasonable I think?

Maybe someone else can comment on 40 - 50 timeframe.

seems ok and that's all pretty standard from a migration point of view.

make sure that the developer is experienced in using wordpress as the cms platform though. all of the urls listed except for one use drupal instead for the cms.

hmm. sorry i didnt see this before now. im fairly proficient in wordpress (have built the servers that are running http://www.tennis.com.au (which is completely wordpress)).

that auto loading cat in the fancybox is a bit weird. there is a whole lot of empty space above the fold there that needs something in it. move everything up or make menu items fill it out maybe? get some images that actually fill the image box. changing from pink to black background on some pages is also a bit odd. seems to be using network of sites which is strange?

do you like it is the question here i think.

yeah i thought the cat might be wierd, but it was my homepage before and i really like it! but if you think its dumb/gets in the way then i get it, it can be removed easily.

i get you on moving it all up a bit, we can do that..

with the image box, it rotates through different galleries each time...so some will fill the space and others wont....

i chose the pink n black cos images are better viewed on black, so anything text based shows up on the pink background and images/galleries on black...i dont mind it.....it IS kind of an art site after all....

not quite sure what you mean by a network of sites?

i do like it,m its mega easy to update, the galleries all the same and simple to use, and yet still has elements of my last site which i have liked and has got me lots of work cos its different etc

for that price i would have expected a bit more! Dude is obviously not a designer.

a rly good way to get awesome design and coding done is 99designs. cost us over $750.

http://99designs.com/custom-wordpress-t ... sign-47272

then from there you go to a coder for another couple of hundred that converts the PSD's to a wordpress theme, bung in your plugins and away you go.

thanks alex :) i love that i has blog section now and can remove or update so easily.

and huge - i know 99designs. many designers i know have ethical problems with that site....ohh ethics.

but TBH they are all too sterile and corporate for what my site needs to be. great for selling bikes, not so great for presenting art & ideas.

i specifically asked him to stay true to the design elements of my last site, so not sure what you mean by hes not a designer. but dont keep your mouth shut, i do want feedback :)

not really ipad related but I just upgraded to snow leopard and so have been taking advantage of some of the new desktop apps via the app store.

most are pretty useless or fill a very small need, but others are quite good. The Soundcloud desktop app is way rad, much better than using Soundcloud via your browser.

why would you want to jailbreak???

yeah, but some of them (read: most) are buggy as.... plus, getting the usual paid apps for free isn't as easy as it sounds (not to mention morally reprehensible :teef: )

unless there was a specific jailbreak app you want/need I wouldn't bother.

see, I'm a tinkerer.. I have to pull things appart and put them back together etc. I had great fun jailbreaking my iphone 3Gs.. played with all the tricks, customised it fully etc etc... It's not that straight-forward and it's prone to fuck-ups, but I'm pretty good with that sort of thing. I now have an iphone 4 and have no inclination to jailbreak it, been there done that.. plus, since iOS4.2 it now does most things I need it to anyways.

We are considering a tablet instead of a second computer.
We use Apple laptop and iphones currently.
Tablet would be used when we both want to be online or for travelling.

I would want to be able to upload photos to tablet on the move. Does no USB mean i can't do this on ipad?
Can you have iPad and other apple products work cooperatively? As in connect them and share have one set of phots in iPhoto rather than have them in 2 places and messy etc?

Maybe, considering we have apple apps available via iphones we should consider a different brand tablet to open us up to more apps and options etc? But what would cooperation be like between our devises then...

THese questions and more are halting my purchase and leading my research.

Yeah, there must be solutions. But i think i might just prefer to get a devise that is designed with my needs in mind rather than needing add ons or fixes. But if the pro's of going all apple outweight that might shift me.

my official line on the ipad is that its a computer extension, not a computer replacement.
not sure if you can get a card reader but transferring files/editing anything, naming stuff on ipad is a bit of a bitch

yes, ipad works perfectly with your other apples and photos can be synced to appear on ipad easily, either all of iphoto or certain albums.

i dont know about other tablets, but if you want seamless and familiar easy use - then get an ipad, but when i travel i go into camera places, get them to put photos on CD, then just transfer to real pooter when i get home, and sync to ipad to show people. easy.

hope some of that helps.
