Needing help with my new toy...

Post by Silverbeat »

Hey sound people,

I have recently decided to try my luck at producing tunes using an AKAI MPK25 Midi Keyboard, and also Garageband initially to get familiar with the process.

It's all a bit daunting using the online tutorials, and so I'm trying to find someone in Melbourne who can show me the ropes, in person.

Anyone know of somebody that can help me? I am willing to pay of course!

Cheers :)

Good man. You should speak to the sales staff there mate.

I'm familiar with MPK's, but not overly familiar with Garage Band.

TBH - there's probably not too many people on here using Garage Band.

What would be a good program then to use for a beginner starting out using an MPK?

Depending on what you're focusing on TBH... and very generally speaking...

Live recording/tracking and mixing: Pro Tools, Cubase
Electronic music using soft synths, samples etc: Ableton, Logic (Mac only), Fruity Loops (PC only), Cubase, Reason
Using loop based material: Acid, Ableton

All of the above: Cubase, Logic

The Keyboard came with Ableton Live Lite - Would this be good to start with?

Basically I am interested in producing Electronic music using loops & tracks and playing around with existing software sounds to begin with.

Sure, that's a great way to start. You'll be a bit limited with LE - I think it's 4 audio tracks and 4 MIDI tracks you can run at anyone time... but if you find yourself enjoying Live Lite, then you can look at upgrading.

no probs. there's usually an upgrade path for LE users to get the full version on the cheap as well if you decide to go down that road.
