Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
falling waaay behind in my editing/uploading...
here's a few from a series i shot about a month ago
Box Hill underpass, spruced up a bit by a senior graphic/vis designer at the studio i work at in c'wood; ASPECT
he does a lot of signage design also (did Ceres/merri creek for example, though creek stuff has been mega vandalised!)
pity they didn't have the budget to redo the pavers... but the relatively low budget treatment really lightens up a dingy underpass. playful too

Hey gang,
I'm interested in stepping into the photography caper as a hobby, have had an interest for some time... what are your thoughts on this camera pack for starting out, seems like a good idea, and the reviews sound favourable: http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/canon-eos- ... s-18-55mm/

Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
550d or 600d both great starters - 600d has the swivel screen which isn't that amazing but can be handy for shooting high or low angles or for video.
it also has a digital zoom feature for video without loosing quality which is pretty sweet for macro stuff (with a good lens too).
lenses are by far more important than the body.
whatever you do, don't use the kit lens. if you have to buy a kit, sell the lens on ebay if you can. or just store it away
even the 18-55 version with IS would be better for image quality and handheld shooting, better yet a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for yummy Bokeh/Dof ($350 ebay)
other cheap-yet-good starter would be 50mm 1.8, or for a better focal length on the crop sensor maybe sigma 30mm 1.4

Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
went the 550d kit, looking forward to getting my hands on it tomorrow. I'll start with the included kit lens, no point lashing out more coin if it turns out I don't have a real passion for it... but thanks for the advice.
it's funny how the importance of lens v. body reminds me of the importance of preamps v. microphone.

Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
i don't agree re not using the kit lenses. i use the kit lenses for all my shots, bar when i borrow Oli's wide angle lens to play with. The kit lenses do just fine for starting out with and playing around with for sure. In fact i haven't bought a new lens at all, just use the kit lenses.

Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
oh but when you do use another lens (such as a piece of L glass) you'll be blown away!
but yes still all the fundamentals of photography to practice regardless of the lens... & as long as shooting raw plenty of fun to be had making amazing images in photoshop (preferably Lightroom, its great)

Re: The Photo Thread (Post yours here)
thanks!
i got a 7d around april last year; most of my flickr photos are with that TBH, didn't really get into posting stuff online before..
lenses definitely help with sharpness, canon 24-105L and tokina 11-16 are fantastic to have and will last long beyond the camera body hopefully.
i've been doing more and more photography for work purposes using 5dmk2 also (mostly landscape architecture), and am going up to sydney this weekend to shoot Darling Quarter, Chinatown and a couple of other recent projects my company (the Sydney office) designed. shooting some video too.
my videography & timelapse stuff over on http://vimeo.com/designbykai/videos/ is with the 7d also.
@huge yes you are right, hard to capture the scale - would've been great to go right up to the base and taken a wide angle. i wish i'd made it up the top of the hill this year too, was great last year @sunset
