oh right i didnt realise you were talking about something other than just using gmail and storing documents within google apps. why would you need to backup your gmail?

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
backup as well as archiving. their gmail storage was near capacity and needed somewhere to dump the thousands of emails. i don't know why they don't just clean it up, but they needed to keep a record i guess. have i suggested the wrong thing? basically, they have no money, no internal server and hopeless IT infrastructure, so hoping this gmail backup thing will be ok.

write the information on a piece of paper. put it in a drawer.
if information is required at a later date, return to drawer and retrieve paper.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
right, another quick questions for the tech heads...
my org has no server to speak of and have not seen it as necessary...but i'm trying to convince them otherwise. just out of interest, how much would it cost to install a server that links approximately 20 computers? i have absolutely no idea about this kind of thing, so don't really even know what I'm asking for in terms of space etc, but basically it needs to store files from various divisions and projects, so they can all be accessed from each puter (with limited access for certain things). does that make sense? any info would be awes. thanks crew.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
righto so they just want a file server? a decent NAS device would do the trick. get an idea of how much data they have, what sort of data it is mostly(files, music, photos, video) etc and i could offer you a more accurate recommendation.
what is their network infrastructure like? do they have a LAN? are they all running off wifi? are they using Macs and PC? how much (physical) space do they have to put this server and how much moneys do they have?

would just be a file server, yup. basically just to put everything in a central location. it'll only be MS files and some photos but nothing too big i shouldn't imagine. in terms of network infrastructure, they are currently based in 3 separate locations, but so to be downsizing to two. two centres are run on LAN/wifi, and the other might only have a dongle thing, but i'm not 100% sure. everyone is on PC (except me), they will have fairly limited space and basically no money. it's something i'd probably have to try and raise money for as they just can't afford it.
hope that helps, and thanks soooo much for your help mang. deeply appreciated.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
I have a question for the IT headz.
I went out and bought a WD Livewire networking device on the weekend because the wireless in my apartment is shit.
Essentially its two hubs which plug into two seperate sockets in your house and one is hard wired to your modem and you can share internet through the electricity cables in the house.
I'm running XP on my studio computer and for some reason the software that comes with the Livewire isn't picking up the ethernet cable coming from the second hub.
Its weird because it works fine on my laptop which is running Windows 7.
Do I need to update the 1394 driver in XP or is there some other way of forcing the ethernet connection to work? Is it possible the ethernet connection on my studio PC isn't fast enough or out of date? Very confused by it all tbh.

get an idea of the amount of data in gigs or terrabytes. might be worth going to cloud hosted storage like dropbox or something.

should have nothing to do with the firewire drivers. if you are just plugging a network cable from one of the boxes into your computer anyway.youthful_implants wrote:I have a question for the IT headz.

so as far as the computer is concerned you are just plugging a network connection into the network card. dis the pc picking up that it has a cable connected but just not getting an IP address? post some screen shots of what you're looking at.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
yeah it is on my quadcore, once you've turned all the pointless graphics off and it's just running the bare bones.
its heaps more stable too. windows 7 gets confused/slows down when you're running lots of tabs in chrome let alone anything atually power hungry. LOL

Depends innit. I have one coz work stuff goes a lot easier on a Unix system and I can't survive without Creative Suite. If they ever bother releasing CS for linux, that'll be another story.

witty: dropbox is really good, super easy to set up and you get 2GB storage for free! If you wanna pay $100 a year you can get 50GB or $200 for 100GB.

(sorry to keep banging on about this) but doesn't dropbox dl it to your puter and then after a while get rid of it from the site itself? i really need it to be more like a google docs kind thing that two people can work from the same version, but i can't go with google docs because they aren't both using gmail. yes...it's a fucking shambles.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
dropbox will sync a local folder on multiple devices to a central server in the cloud. any change made on any one of those devices is synced across all devices. it wont get removed unless someone removes it. (they have an undelete function)
if you want two people working on the same file at the same time (argh nightmare at the best of times) then you will get what is called a conflicted copy of that file. the changes will have to be merged manually.
on a windows/mac file system you cannot do this either. google docs you can but they are good like that.

i doubt that they'd be using it at the same time (hey, they might not even use it all). I might just do the dropbox thing in the mean time I suppose...will have to go to each computer that'll need it though...in three different centre. ffs. is there one that is just a site that it's stored on that doesn't require downloading software?
there's a web designer coming in feb next year, so i'll wait to see if they have any better ideas about linking emails etc. otherwise, i'll just set up a google mail one. it's a fucking joke the way it is at the moment...as i'm sure you've gathered.

Re: the official console and PC nerdy thread!
Witty, Dropbox is very very very easy to install. As in, you could probably just send people links and they'll be able to sort it for themselves. (My 70 year old technologically-keen-but-not-at-all-gifted old boss managed without intervention, which can't be said for many 'puter related tasks!)
Alternatively, I second setting up google apps. My cheap-arse work has done it, because apparently we can't be trusted with our own server
Everyone can has a work email account and access to common docs, chat, etc. It's nice, because you can have all the gmail functionality without having to run it through your personal account. Serially, look at it, because google docs will save you file format headaches (eg. someone using docx and someone else using doc, etc.)
Having said that, google docs gives me the absolute shits, but it's good for basic collaborative stuff.

BF3 = best FPS ever made by far!
Randomly found mecka on a server owning face heheh
Now that I'm finally getting more weap unlocks and finding best maps/servers to rank on I'm improving a bit
Start Uncharted 3 today as well, as brilliant as expected. Interactive movie perhaps, but the best kind possible
