Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.
Runs a joy with silken twine.
Growing up, my dad played me stuff like JJ Cale, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, and Bob Marley. An original Woodstock hippy (yes, he was there), he went the same way as the rest of them come the 80s with the wife, kids, house, car, bank job, etc. Was this music influential? I can't say it plays much of a part now, but surely all of life's experiences are influential in some way.
In another thread I mentioned my brother's friends who played me James Brown, The Meters, Funkadelic, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Jean Luc Ponty and Frank Zappa when I was in high school. Despite their constant taking the piss out of me, I still owe my bro's mates a great deal because what they played me has formed the whole rhythmic basis of how I perceive music to this day. My bro gave up the guitar and became a chef, while his mates went on to form Good Buddha and go all Aussie hip hop on us.
All this time, my aunty was into Brian Eno, Talking Heads and Prince right from the beginning and I completely missed the boat on this stuff! I listened to her records but I just couldn't appreciate what I heard until much later. Funny how tastes change. In recent years my aunt led me to discover a lot of the newer groups I now listen to, eg Tortoise, Susumu Yokota, Papa M and Godspeed You Black Emperor! May she live to 100.
Hence I am still finding out what I like, keeping my ears and mind open and enjoying new finds. The last thing I want to do is end up like my dad and lose interest in any new music made after I hit 30.

I saw that warehouse when they first moved in, just plain white and simple at that stage. I suspect my brother-in-law Greg who works at Beyond must have had something to do with making that happen. I must ask whether he can get Plankton on Getaway or something.
Man, that's some funny shit.
