roaming is never included in any kind of cap, it's arserapingly expensive no matter what you do. i think my record in 1 month is €2600 (thank christ it wasn't me paying it - and yeah that was on a business plan with a company that represented ~40% of the economy of the country, haha).

add_boy: yep, they will unlock for you no questions asked, but it takes a week to process. just wait a week and then do a full backup & restore through itunes.

Best options when going overseas is to firstly turn ur Data roaming off in settings if your using ur personal sim. Just ensures you dont get charged for Data abroad.

If you need internet try hook into WiFi...hotels usually have it available.

Thirdly do some research on local pre paid plans...goes without saying should always be cheaper..although depends where you are I had troubles with Data plans in U.S.A

just go wifi, it's free all over the place over there. turn data roaming off. Just use your oz sim to receive important calls/texts, avoid using the phone to make calls, just get a calling card and go to phone booth etc if you need to call home. I think you can buy or organise a roaming pack before you go :?: for a few calls.

US mobile companies are run by absolute nuffies living in the dark ages. We don't even have the same 3G frequencies as any other country (except perhaps Canada). To the best of my knowledge, the only prepaid phone data plan in the country is available to network locked, branded pieces of shit :tard:

Having said all that, I just learnt of the magic of prepaid mobile wifi. If anyone's going to be in the States and doesn't want to have to rely on finding wifi (free or paid), check Virgin prepaid 'mifi'. Not really cheap and their time periods are a fucken joke, but finally a contract-free data option for stupid America. And it solves phone, 'puter, ipad, etc. all in one go :D

Side note my carrier was charging me $20 per mb when in the U.S. So good idea to turn data roaming off. Ended up using like 2.5mb when i was desperate and couldnt get to a WiFi spot so do the math, friggin rip!

Gotta love Maccas for free WiFi tho, i assume they have free WiFi in most countries?

seems OS4.0 causing issues for 3G/3GS users.

http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/i ... 10ijp.html

i actually am having issues with Safari load times, something that used to take a couple secs to load up now takes nearly 2-3mins depending on site.

Anyone else having similar issues with OS4.0 upgrade?

yep. sms is rooted. takes a long time to load..

most apps are being impacted by this.

4.0.1 is out apparently. with the antenna fix. I HOPE they do a 4.0.2 to address this.

There is a 'hack' to roll back to 3.1.3 but mines not TOO bad so waiting for an update?!

my 4.0 on 3Gs is fine....

not that keen on the multitasking tbh... handy to have, but you need to be able to choose whether you close or CLOSE a program... having to open that little bar to close shit down properly is annoying.

not a chance. heaps faster, much better battery, charges mad quickly, screen is GORGEOUS (seriously, unbelievably mint, even when compared to the n900), fits in your pocket nicer and i haven't seen the reception issues at all in the two weeks i've had mine.

just updated to os 4.0.1 the other night...signal strength meant to be more accurate on 4, 3G & 3GS. believe its somewhat true...at work sitting at my desk i normally get nearly full strength signal...after upgrading to 4.0.1 its only giving me 2 bars.

jp conspiracy theory number 1

so i upgraded to OS 1.0.4 the other day. meant to fix the singal strength to be more accurate. and yes i agree, it seems that sometimes the signal strength has been showing to be reduced more often.

but....is it possible that this is because the signal strength is actually less than it has been in the past. I've been feeling that I've actually been getting service issues that I didn't have in the past. I often don't get interweb service in my office which i always have no problems.

Is it possible that Apple, in realising its iPhone 4.0 has singal strength problems, has released in the 4.0.1 update some changes for the previous phones that actually reduces the performance of these phones so that it makes the 4.0 look the same or not as bad by comparison??

just a thought.

^ Yeah could be the case. I just feel that my Iphone in general is a bit more laggier than it used to be. And the signal strength things is bugging the hell out of me. I used to get a pretty strong 3G signal at my work sitting at a desk. But now its dropped off or more so changes frequently from a few bars to full bars. Everything seemed to work fine on the OS 3 version before 4 came along

Had a play with the iPhone 4 in the Optus store - dont quite like the new shape and design. seems a little more thicker than previous models bcoz of the rectangular shape they are now.

everything else seems to run fine i.e Apps and smoothness of OS 4 on the phones. screen also look nicer as well.

I wasn't going to get one but when I found out I could move to Telstra, save myself money and get the new phone I decided to jump ship. So far my impressions are good, it's nice and definitely seems to run faster with better screen resolution. Watching movies and tv shows on it is quite a treat. That said I'm not blown away by it and wouldn't have rushed out, got rid of a perfectly working old iphone and got the new iphone if it wasn't for changing carrier and saving money.
