mb.c

awesome site, has been so good over the years for many reasons....

community, music appreciation, gaining friends and meeting new people, promotion, making contacts, raising money for charity.... and some mega lols too...

however

I feel the community spirit has wained of late. The xmas bbq last year was a shambles and I called a meet up/bbq a month or so ago and 7 people rocked up :? Not that that is the only indicator, but I think you'll all agree that the same core group of people posting in the same threads becomes tired and stagnate after a while

This site has MEGA potential to strengthen the broken-beat and underground dance music culture/scene in melbourne. Seams as though it is being wasted on a core group of people who post while at work, and probably mainly due to work-related boredom (I am guilty of this) Not that that is a bad thing, but when that seems like all you've got, I think better things could be done.

I know Lucas and Karl feel they don't have the time or energy to really put anymore in than they currently do (ala closing the site a while back).. BUT the amount of potential for greatness is huge, surely the reigns could be handed over OR people (like current mods :? ) could be more involved.. I know there's a lot of smart IT people here that could more than help with that side of things... I would be willing to help all I can, hell I'll put mb.c logos on every party I do if that was cool (is it?).

My thoughts on what this site needs in order to take advantage of it's potential...
  • * general clean-up and deletion of spam-bot users.
    * some form of promotion to encourage new membership
    * more parties :teef:
    * more collaborative parties hosted by mb.c
    * site re-vamp, change of theme (obviously keeping the minimal vibe)
I'm sure there are plenty of other things that would boast the value of this site to all....

discuss

PS: I'm not meaning to diss mb.c,,, it's still great in many ways :)

sure. no one is more community minded than you, i know that.
Praise you for your efforts, I have made more friends here than reasonable for a website, love it in every way.

Agree things have fallen off, would love to see new heads coming through here. If there was some money best way would be to hand out cards or stickers at dnb and breaks parties.

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so i'm back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me
...and basically that's the situation

cards good stickers bad... venues hate when you hand out stickers, they end up EVERYWHERE.

melbournebeats.com could hold a yearly bash (like melbourne breaks unite)... either for charity OR to get a slush fund for things like cards.. posters... and/or other events, even some interesting outdoor and/or fee events would be aces.

I think it would help if there were more nights associated with melbournebeats.com, simply so people see the URL on flyers/in the club and start frequenting it more to find out what's going on.

Here's a thought: Why doesn't everyone already running nights who's an mb.c'er start sticking the mb.c logo/URL on their flyers? It won't cost anything, and it'll raise awareness of the forum + build up its profile right?

Indeed, met some awesome people through this site, yourself included.

You've just got me perplexed... what is a "reasonable" amount of people to know from a web site?

i like these ideas, especially the spam-bots, its been pissing a few of the mods off...

i also like the once a year collaborative party for charity idea (i think we have learnt a lot putting on Fire Aid and Tsunami Appeal), which in turn would bring the people.

we just need a no idiots allowed rule

Love the passion, Dan. Big ups!!!

In agreeance with ya and would fully support anything you, or others, comes up with. For reference to this thread:

Beats Working put the mb.com logo on all of our artwork (fliers, posters, website, etc) for about a year to show the support back in 2005...dont know if it brought any new heads to the site or not, but we tried. It's not a hard thing to do...

Melbourne Breaks Unite, the Tsunami show and Fire Aid were all awesome and showed what we can do if everyone gets behind something. Big ups to all involved.

But...

Why do peeps come to this site in the first place?

I reckon, and this is just my opinion, it's 90% inside jokes and mindless banter (like you said comes from the small, core regular users). The promotional aspects of this site are next to nothing, as the high majority of punters you're promoting to here already know about the events anyways (preaching to the converted, yeah?) and the user base is quite small to start with.

Most show threads are a great way of promoting one thing though...the DJ/act who just happens to be one of two things:

a. Puting the show on
b. Playing at the show

What show? It's all about your name up in the lights to all the other aspiring, or disgruntled, peeps on this site. A lot of the regular posters on this site dont even go to shows...hell, foo lives in Iceland or something, yeah? That's why all the traffic has gone to Off Topic. Splitting the site up was a bad idea IMO, but it's not my site. I support the decision, because I dont run the site and the people that do thought it would be better based on the mass opinion. I am only one.

I reckon the biggest ups should go to the peeps on this site who promote gigs (start threads) they're not playing or not involved with in any way other than purely loving the music the show is promoting, i.e. brb, liz and the rest.

I see the writing on the wall and simply use mb.com for what it is: a fun, mildly inteligiment online place to waste time when my mind needs a break...or needs a spark. I throw up threads for parties (though not as much as I used to as I primarily play as a club DJ nowadays and they dont pay me as a promoter) and I know that nobody here will come to these gigs (see my recent thread for Sunday Side Up). Again, it's 99% to see my name in the lights on a forum used by people I do respect for the most part...just being honest.

IMO Seeing mb.com as anything more than this is a thought process I can respect in others, but I sure as hell know that I dont have the time to make the changes. But I will support those that do with my positive vibrations (a little Bob reference never hurts).

Dan, you care. You can do this. I reckon it would be rad. But if you dont, I'd still be happy if mb.com was kept the way it is.

Melbourne Beats: giveaways, etc

Mixes: monthly podcasts

Production & Technology: MB producer compilation CDs (I know that's a lot of work, but maybe just once a year)

Too be honest, I waste my working day on here and enjoy it for the distraction. I think it all got taken too serious a while back, and those that didn't get banned but left of their own accord did so to appease a small group of people who knew each other off line.
Respect to all those that put effort, time and money into this, but a forum that gets too restricted runs the risk of becoming too regimented.
Personally speaking, I am thankful that I still get to post here cause I speak my mind and take the piss all the time - that's just me, but I'm also a DJ/ Promoter/ Musician/ Audio Engineer who collects, releases, appreciates, shares, obsesses, breathes and shits music 24/7.
My 2 cents.....

I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to use melbournebeats.com to find out what's on... I could read Beat or Inpress, but I like the interactive element. Plus it's a great place to come for the low-down on the clubbing scene in general, eg the lockout, ARIA DJ licenses, the general war on fun etc. But it's true of just about any forum that the off-topic section is usually the busiest and tends to fill up with in-jokes pretty quickly... that's fine though, it's a community after all, as long as the site retains some scrap of relevant information it's all good... :D

that's great, I would actually be interested in doing this......

gotta get an A-OK from Karl and Lucas though. I can't see it being a problem for them, as long as it doesn't just stay with one party, venue or promoter and gets passed back to the keeper (you I guess), so that others can use it too.

(Ps: btw, I have your 6pack stubby cooler at my place ;0 )

Melbourne Beats is a very closed community.
I know of numerous people who have tried to sign up and are unable to because admin wont approve them. Hence these people use melbournednb.com instead.

Yeah, sign up process is fucked because of the spam issue. Have them email lynt`/at/`dmcrecords.com.au and I'll (manually) do it.
