I think the acting is only the most important part of a film if the plot is character driven, which most sci fi isn't really.Direkt wrote:The acting is definately one of the most important parts of any film, along with script and direction IMO.
Certain genre's (such as action) can sometimes get by with sub-standard acting.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Another good example would be Star Wars where the acting is terrible in all 6 films but we all love them anyway.
Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
For me, in order of importance (generally speaking):
1. Script/plot
2. Acting
3. Directing
4. everything else
I.e. doesn't matter how good the acting, directing or special FX are... if it's a shit plot, and/or written badly - the movie will suck balls... every time.
If you get a good plot/script, paired with good acting, then the director really has to try hard to fuck it up. If he/she does a good job, you've got a classic movie.
IMO, of course.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Yeah I agree with the order of things you mentioned Direkt, but with certain genres and especially given that some films are visually oriented in CGI its a very tough job to create the atmosphere required to get the performance out of the actors.
Not only that, but scripts which are only loosely based on reality require different treatment from the actors. I thought Bruce Willis was fantastic in the Fifth Element because he was comical which really suited the role, and yet that style which he uses in every film quickly becomes very tiresome.

that lead guy actor was just so hammy. the whole thing was just so hammy. hammy mchammerson and the ham twins.
having said that the last bit where he storms the HQ was pretty cool, taking out like 50 dudes in a row, espesh the bit where he inserts the gun into the hole he just through the guys head so he can shoot at the others whilst using the dudes body as a shield. bloody inspired, although I'm sure it was stolen from a korean flick or something.

I've not seen him in anything else so can't make any sort of judgement call that would be valid or reasoned. what I can do though is make a slanderous and completley unjustified remark based on virtually no evidence bar his ridiculousy terrible performance in wanted. and i will.

Nah, he was hammy as hell. I hated Angelina in it to. I'm skinny so I can't say much but I guess I'm an expert so I'll say it anyway...I'm surprised she could lift those fucking guns with the teenyweeny arms she has. You'd think she would have worked on her muscles a bit for the movie or something.
Hated it. The best bit in the film was the stunt where Ange swings the car around and opens the door and Hammy just lands in the passenger seat. That deserves a medal. Everything else was tripe.

the comic of Wanted was so much fucking better than the film it makes me hurt to think about it. In fact, the statement "loosely based on" doesn't even apply... as the two share little in common except for that wanker pulled out of mediocrity.

Still on my kung fu kick (ha! I made a funny ), watched The Shaolin Temple last night with Jet Li in his first debut feature film. He's barely 18 I think, just adooooorable! Truly a fantastic movie, full to the brim with everything you expect from a proper old school kung fu flick. Comedy, drama, a tinge of romance and full pelt kung fu-ness.
Story goes he wants to avenge the murder of his father but gets his ass kicked and seeks refuge in the Shaolin Temple. The Monks decide to make a Monk out of him and he trains with them, learning the path of the righteous, all the while still with vengeance in his heart.
Check it, for serious. 4.5 outta 5 thumbs to the throat

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
fuck I love lots of aussie films. there is just something about them, some quality, that is different to films from anywhere else.
Its almost like the messages are more subtle, with a lighter touch, than many of the US and UK ram-it-down-your-throat kind of 'morals' etc.
anyone seen 'Three dollars' ?
Beautiful, haunting movie set in melbourne, god the city is so morbidly portrayed kinda, grey and romantic, its about a guy with his wife and kid, and they fell in love sharing a listening station at local record shop listening to joy division,
the narrative skips back and forth to the present when they have a 6 year old daughter, and he loses his job as a chemical engineer for the govt. due to being honest about some toxic soil deposits in land to be developed into housing.
Its basically about a good man fallen on bad times, and the things he learns through this, but there is great moments all the way through this movie, especially his day on the streets with the alcoholic guy Nick, and the cinematography is excellent, the characters really true to reality, and it also indulged my love of movies shot in melbourne.
five out of five!

For those interested in the screenwriting process and the behind the scenes on how alot of Movies are made check out this site:
http://creativescreenwritingmagazine.blogspot.com/
Each podcast has really in depth interviews with screenwriters and run 1-2 hours long so most of the dialogue really fleshes out ideas and themes that, (to me at least) aren't always obvious in these films.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Will check it Kitty, sounds like a good way to spend a few hours.
Re-watched That Touch of Mink (Doris Day, Cary Grant) with my sis the other day. Ace fun! The roles of men and women are well fucking defined and it's quite the gas to watch how it used to be. And the fashion show!! It was like watching the Dior exhibit on screen, lush outfits and I want them all.
Gonna watch How To Marry a Millionaire tonight (Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Becall, Betty Grable)...jeez I love movies from the 50's and 60's
Also watched Spaceballs last night. After so many viewings it still tickles me
"I am your father's brother's sister's mother's former roommate"
"What does that make us?"
"NOTHING! Which is what you are about to become"
Also watched LA Story after many years of trying to find it in a video library (thanks Malx). A fantastic tongue in cheek take on life in LA in the early 90's. Steve Martin rocks in that movie. Highly recommended viewing
