Okay.... if you could chose one effect, and only one - what would it be?

Reverb for me.

Effect type - sorry, should have been more specific... but of course feel free to specify which actual unit (SW or HW) does it for you if you see fit.

i'm in love with camelspace. (reverb/filter/delay/gate)

and also the tritone digital stuff.

but i'd say that reverb wins overall (TC system 6000 / Lexican 906L are insane)

Yeah I've heard the Lexicon's are awesome... I don't have any HW units unfortunately... Just the Waves, iZotope and Digi plug-ins.

Gotta be amp drive.
nothing like routing my synth through the Vetta 2, dialing up some killer Mesaboogie triple rectifier sound and micing the bitach at mega volumes.
of just taking a direct line (through the cabinet sim) when I'm feeling wussy.

I miss the pre-amp gain on my marshal valvestate :(. It blew up. That's what you get for playing in a metal band with guitars detuned down to A-E-A-D-F#-B. I think we even tried to go to A flat once! lol idiots. \m/ \m/
If you pass her through a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone you can actually get the gates of hell to open up.

At the moment my favorite effect is running shit through dads fucked old reel-to-reel 4-track. The heads are fucked and the tapes are brittle, it sounds fucken trippy. Just need to figure out the right dynamics processing to make it a little easy on the ears. Anyone know of a plug-in, or easy way, to balance the dynamics from left to right? I like how the tone changes and vonvolutes, but having the volume go up and down randomly from left to right does your head in. I don't want to convert to mono if I don't have to.

I know, split stereo into two monos, and flatten the shit out of them independantly. Stick them back together as stereo. simple! then I can keep my stero image. Unless there is some techno trickery I'm overlooking?

Well in cubase (or insert your app of choice) you can:

import the audio to a stereo track
switch the pan control into width mode
narrow image (if necessary...)
insert compressor of choice (stereo compressor)
smash to taste
export
win
.

I'll go with Izotope Trash, 'cause it's pretty versatile and sounds tasty.

iZotope Ozone3 is my fave of the iZotope range...

Lovin' my verbs and delays at the moment though - bigups to the recent dub influence!

Compression: mainly the ssl gcomp and the dynamics on the echannel emus from waves. Kjaerhus GAC1 is also stunningly good.
