Melbourne club bans straight people

Post by universal sea »

Peel Bar... gays only:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6697469.stm

That suggests to me the flipside is that gay people can be banned from "hetero" clubs... which would be a backwards step I think.

I'm normally the devils advocate when it comes to this sort of discussion. What's good for the goose, no double standards and whatnot. But for this I sort of agree with McFeely.

I've been to the Peel a few times and it's a very gay club. I went with gay friends and had a great time mingling etc. I was an outsider and they let me in.

But the idea that people have bucks night and hens nights there just to laugh at the gay guys makes me mad as hell. It's like going to a techno club and bitching about the music. Or letting pervs into an S&M club, not there to appreciate the activities, just there to get an eyeful and a giggle. The Peel is specific, and if straight people aren't gonna respect the patrons in a club specifically aimed at homosexual men, they should probably be excluded.

I see your point Sea I really go, about the concept being rather backwards and contradictory to the idea we are all equal/the same/whatevs. But let's face facts...there are (as quoted by McFeely) over 2000 clubs in Melbourne that are available for straight people to mingle. If the Peel is the only fully gay club, the only place where gay guys can express their sexuality without being ridiculed, maybe it's a good thing to exclude some people.

I'm still in two minds about it, to be honest, but I'm leaning more to the side that perhaps it's alright.

I must say I agree with the amusingly named Tom McFeely. It's a gay bar and is well known as a gay bar, ans as he pointed out in a quote today, "There are 2000 pubs and clubs in this city that cater to a heterosexual audience and only a handful that cater to the gay community". I think he's got a pretty sound argument there.

It is also not a total straight ban. I know a guy who works there on the weekend, who today told me that it's not a case of no straights at all, it is the right to exercise selective entry, ie. if the plac is near capacity, they will only let gays in, or if a bucks or hens night shows up (which apparently happens all the time... fucked if I know why).

No doubt a whole buch of fuckwits will get their knickers in a twist because they feel discriminated against. Ten bucks says those same fuckwits had never heard of the place before today. Get over it.

I don't have a problem with it.

I think any minority should be allowed to segregate themselves from the majority once in awhile if they feel it's uncomfortable otherwise. Take women's gyms, or this gay club.

Oh. Except that women are the majority.

... I'll get me coat.

Easy. Anyone who doesn't give a reach-around is clearly not a gay.

Yeah lesbians are out too. It's for gay men, not necassarily gay people. You wouldn't see many gay men at a lesbian bar would ya?

Are there any lesbian bars that anyone knows of...for interests sake?

Ahh, but of course! When I was doing the door at FireAid some chap came up to me and gave me a flyer. When I looked at him all funny he goes "well, you're a lesbian, right?"

not really, they have a night that is largely supported by lesbians, only one night a week and it's not something they meant to happen, just turned out that way.

Yeh...largely due to QnA being on across the road on the same night. All the hot ladies are at Alia though (for real) :)

There are a few other bars (mostly not very good, or really, really bad)... Glasshouse for one.

I always thought that the Peel was for men only anyway... at least thats how its always been portrayed in various gay papers and among us (apart from the gals night). I can't believe its causing such an uproar...

It sounds fair to me.

And no, banning gay's from "hetro" clubs (if they exist) would not be the same IMO - as I've never heard of a group of gay's poking fun (pun intended) at a hetro male or female...

I'm sure if you rolled up as a hetro male in a group of one or two, there would be no problem - it's more about groups of "outsiders" spoiling the vibe for the patrons from what I gather.

Someone very close to me is gay, and to see the stuff the he has endured makes my blood boil. If he can have a night of not worrying about whether he is being jeered at then bring it on.

When you see someone you love putting up with pointelss prejudice and huge volumes of hate it kind of becomes personal.

Flying the rainbow flag for you, Ed (you lurker).

my best friend goes to the peel almost every weekend,
and has tried to take me there on many occasions.

i am in support of the legislation, cause there are plenty of places who discriminate against gays in more subtle ways.

me and my crew have been thrown out of hip hop nights cause a copule of the boys were kissing, so i dont see the problem with one venue making it a rule so that they remain a place where their patrons are comfortable.

im a bit sad i never went there now though.

what about the fag hags eh?

yeah.. i think those stoopid hen and buks parties should piss off and not get married untill they are friggen sane and have some respect. clearly all their marriages will fail from the disrespect anyway.

The peel seems like a really good place for gay men because it is an easy way for them to get out and socialise without being judged so harshly.

I think it's fair enough

There is plenty of provision within equal opportunity and discrimination for legislation for exceptions.

For example the EEO act has a number of exceptions which allow discrimination against people in certain situations (ie fair ones)

For example it is lawful to discriminate against people on the basis of genuine occupational requirements. This adds a level of fairness. If a job requires tight confined spaces work, and a person is too big to fit in these spaces then its fair enough that they are discriminated against on this basis.

Obviously the examples aren't directly parrellel, but the concept is the same, that when it comes to discrimination standards aren't absoloute (nor should the be)

As such I think the reasons provided by the bar are fair enough.

almax > surely you cant equate gay bashing with 'breeders'

im not gay, but i still refer to certain people as 'feckin breeders' casue there is a mentality that just pumping out babies will suddenly give your life meaning, and i think the world has enough population to deal with already.

doesnt mean i hate people with kids, or kids, or that i will never have kids.

Never really thought of it like that, I just work with quite a few gheys man, and (all in jest) they refer to me as "a fucking breeder" and i dont have kids. Mind you i call Matty (one of the gheys men) a "sequined sausage muncher" so i kind of deserve it. lol

loving the banner ads at the bottom of this thread!!

As for the ban, fair enough I suppose, there are loads of pubs to go around that area.

Moral dilemma:

What if someone who is "straight" goes to the Peel and discovers all these years he/she was wrong and a whole new side of them opens up and they realise they are gay?

The proposed ban/ban will stop this situation from ever happening...
