i would have shared it with him. didn't go to the party but was supposed to, he in big trouble, probably will get away with a life ban and deportation, but if he wasn't a celeb you'd get a month in jail easy. pretty severe on stuff here, i've been super squeaky clean for the longest time ever since moving here, forced me onto booze,,,

he's still in the clink as far as I know, might be stuck here until Ramadan in september when they traditionally pardon all the naughty tourists.
He has had one court appearance and is due back soon, next week i think. Have been contemplating finding out if i could pay him a visit and taking him some music, must be pretty bored in there, although the last dj celeb to get busted - with a gram of coke, said that the jail that they held him in for quite a few months was like a 3 star hotel.

Well, it was an honest mistake, these things do happen. The sensible thing to do would be to just deport him immediately... hell, ban him from coming back if they want, but why waste their money jailing him for 4 years?
And then you read about shit like this:

Yes, he may have been in the wrong, but Dubai certainly don't seem to be winning any international friends at the moment.

i guess they figure then people would be more likley to take the risk in the first place.a1studmuffin wrote:Well, it was an honest mistake, these things do happen. How can it be justified as an honest mistake?flippo wrote:i guess they figure then people would be more likley to take the risk in the first place.a1studmuffin wrote:Well, it was an honest mistake, these things do happen. The penalty is a deterrent. Well supposed to be.
yeah but it is a ridiculous penalty..
think about it like this, what if a mate of yourse was passing through dubai on a buisness trip, he packed some clothes and in one of the pockets there happened to be half a gram of weed, that had fallen out of a bag into his pocket.
would he deserve a 4 year jail term?

Its not what I think the punichment should be, its what the law of the land dictates what time the crime shall carry.
yeah i was refering to honnest mistake, a mistake which doesnt warrent a 4 year jail term, but unfortunatley for bike rider it is.black star wrote:Yeah, how about friends of mine are living in Dubai and they are being extra careful cause thye know the penalties involved.sAme'0 wrote:yeah but it is a ridiculous penalty..

No so sure about calling it an "honest mistake".sAme'0 wrote:yeah i was refering to honnest mistake, a mistake which doesnt warrent a 4 year jail term, but unfortunatley for bike rider it is.black star wrote:Yeah, how about friends of mine are living in Dubai and they are being extra careful cause thye know the penalties involved.sAme'0 wrote:yeah but it is a ridiculous penalty..

"Oh sorry officer, was an honest mistake. Didn't mean to have this gear in my pocket. Should have taken it out, seen."

Some guy had a 0.01gram speck of leaf on his shoe and was imprisoned. Another guy had a poppy seed left over from a bread roll and was imprisoned...

Yeah, it's crazy that they can even get away with that sort of thing, the world is a scary place. I don't even understand why they bother going so far out of their way to imprison a foreigner on such flimsy grounds. I have a mate who (incredibly stupidly) tried to take a few grams of cocaine into the US when he'd just turned 18. US customs got him, confiscated the drugs, and simply deported him straight back home. Obviously he can't return there now, but how is that not the easiest solution for everyone involved?FunkyJ wrote:I've known Diz for a number of years... I hope things work out for him - he hasn't been sentenced yet has he? Last I heard they were still holding him but hadn't charged him with anything yet.
The thought of going to jail for 4 years -in the prime of your life - for something so questionably illegal is a terrible one.
