Personally I'd save yourself the cash... they're so overpriced for what they are - you pay for the legend more than the actual results it produces. If you feel like a DIY project, the x0xb0x gets rave reviews (electronically it's an exact clone of the TB-303) and is about 20% of the going price... you can probably even find someone to put it together for you and it'll still cost about 25% of the original price.

But, i don't want to wait 6-12months for one, and prebuilt ones go for over 1k. I've always wanted to get a 303, only now I can afford it.

I want to write acid house/electro, so I think the price is worth it.

get some software emulators.
I think the official Rebirth is available for free on the net.

That acidvoice website has a pretty indepth comparison of all the emulations (hardware and software), you should be able to find something usable in there. Of course, if it's a genuine case of gear lust you've got, nothing could possibly satisfy like the original.

Its a bit of gear lust, but I mostly just want THAT sound.

No software can emulate it IMO. I don't use software anyway. The sequencer is a major part of the 303's sound.

It's not just the actual sound of the 303 that's important, the sequencer is quirky to use, and sometimes you "accidently" create a cool sequence.

Hard to explain in words. You also have swing etc.

Anyway, I don't want to start another 303 vs emulators debate. We all have different tastes.

I know it's a lot of money for a tiny plastic box, but it's better than pissing it up the wall. I'll get a lot of use out of it.

We had one... sold it... software emulators simply got too good.

Might want to look at an MC202 if you want a good price (colloquially known as The Poor Man's 303)... also has a fucked up sequencer.. but in a different way to a TB.

Plus there's actually more happy accidents with better sequencers... it depends on you though really.
Although working within limitations can sometimes force the creation of cool shit.

...as long as Fun = not achieving the sequence, note and bar length you actually wanted.

Locked on the MC202 Pen & Paper Crew... (was it 1200 that you had to add up to for a full bar?)

Actually my brother still has one of these... he may want to sell it if anyone's interested.
*ignore what I said about the sequencer.. it's great and easy... best sequencer ever... and don't forget the sheer cliff of fun that it offers.

there is also the mc202 hack which converts midi to mc202 tape files.. if you prefer using midi to sequence

either robin or logitronics
robin has the parts
if i drop it at logitronics i'l grab the bits from chips for brains to ensure speedy return, unless you know locals with pots/ tact switches

I'd go with logitronics personally, if you want it done quickly.

Are the tact switches the same as on the 808? If so then I have some spare ones if you want, how many you need?. Don't have pots though, but like you said, chips or vintage planet will have some.

i think they are different, they are same as 606 and 101
