The Cinematic Orchestra - Tuesday, 20th Jan 2009

Been waiting to see these guys for ages, here's hoping they bring out a few guests with them as well..

THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA, Palais Theatre, Tuesday 20th January.

Created by composer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Swinscoe in 1999, British-based The Cinematic Orchestra lives up to their name with an atmospheric and beguiling combination of ingenious sampling, live instruments and jazzy electronic sound with a great swing and beat.

TCO's debut album Motion, a soundtrack to an imaginary thriller, took everyone by surprise and was voted by listeners of Giles Peterson's Radio One show as the album of the year. That album, along with subsequent albums - Every Day, Man With A Movie Camera and Ma Fleur - have seen TCO (whose members expand and contract with each new album, sometimes including a string section, often collaborating with vocalists like Fontella Bass and newcomer Patrick Watson, and top free jazz saxophonist Tom Chant and pianist Nick Ramm) enjoy massive cult success resulting in an invitation to play at the Director's Guild Award ceremony for the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the legendary director Stanley Kubrick. Their song To Build a Home from Ma Fleur will be well known to people here after being prominently used in the award winning Cadbury Schweppervescence ‘Burst' commercial

More than just a studio act however, TCO manage to translate their spine tingling blend of jazz, soul, and funk, orchestral and sampled beats into the live arena. In doing so they have impressed audiences over and over again headlining festivals and playing at venues including the prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

In January it will finally be Australia's turn to witness TCO's extraordinary live show when they perform what promises to be an epic performance in an epic venue - Melbourne's Palais Theatre ... this is guaranteed to have your neck hairs standing to attention!

Brilliant. Watching the drummer was worth the ticket price alone, he was fucking incredible. I love the palais, but was pretty rough that security took my girlfriend's camera, simply "because it's an SLR", only to see a girl in there with a fucking medium format camera and a tripod (and she wasn't press). Incidentally, if the girl with the medium format camera is reading this, I'd love to see your shots :)

Performance was utterly phenomenal!! The group was everything i expected and more!
All of the musicians came across as really humble artists - despite the amount of talent behind them all. Drummer was nuts! How ace was his solo in the first part?!
Heidi Vogel's vocals are absolutely heavenly and sound so much better in real life. I was blown back every time she dropped a note.
By far the standout for me was Guy Reverend when he played 'To Build A Home'. Fantastic!! :D

Someone's already upped a vid clip to youtube for any interested:

Watch the posted video on YouTube.

Had a few small gripes tho:
- The lighting, which i thought was pathetic and did no justice to the awesomeness that were CO. Those wide panning flood lights that went across the crowd were really annoying.
- Sound issues. From where we were sitting we could hear a really audible buzz running through the speakers. Shat me to tears as it really distracted me from the performance. Fluctuated, but was mainly heard after the lights went really bright, or when Guy used his acoustic guitar.
- No encore? Was a bit surprised, and disappointed, they didnt come back on :(

Overall a really memorable performance.
Hope they come back very soon :)

That was a real highlight for me too. And the person who shot that video must have been sitting near me, because i shot nearly the same vid.

His voice is so sublime, i got goose bumps!

^^^ It's usually the pianist who sings that tune, if that's what you're referring too J0rdz.

I can't believe they didn't play All Things To All Men :(. I thought it was a given. One of my favorite pieces ever.

Great show, though.

Wouldn't be right to do that without Maneuver though, I don't think.

there is an instrumental version. Although I love the Roots Manuva one, I prefer the instrumental. It's got mad spine tingeing piano licks.

I was hoping they'd have a harp on stage a well. And that they'd play Channel 1 Suite.

Seems like Melbs got jibbed :(
Was a lil annoyed they didnt come back on for at least one encore. Or maybe they did, and we left too early... :(

Na Jordz, half the band were at the front of the palais about 10 mins after the lights went on.
