Lots of differences.

I just picked up a 32" Samsung LCD - V nice.

Google LCD Vs Plasma - you'll get heaps of info.

From what I can gather, the difference bwteen LCD and plasma aren't as great as they used to be.

Plasma shows black better. LCD struggles a bit with that. I think LCD struggles a little from viewing from angles on it.

Plasma's used to have a short life span, but I think with newer technology, this isn't as bad as it was previously... 60,000 viewing hours for both now, I think...

Plasma's are supposedly better for fast moving images also.

Sweet, just had a read and it seems its 50/50 really.
Im told its better to get 1080 for the PS3 to look its best, so ill have to look into that.
Ill have a chat to the dudes at the stores for a point dexter perspective !!

cheers

For sure, if you're spending the money on the PS3 - you might as well get a full-HD TV to take full advantage of Blu-Ray and Full-HD gaming.

Plasmas are notorious for burn-in so are not good for games. Although the high end models don't suffer as badly.

Or you could be a cheap ass like me, and double-up your widescreen LCD monitor (if you have one) as your console gaming screen too.
You'd just need a VGA converter box (converts component output to vga computer monitor cable) which are under $100. Mine was around 100 but I'm sure you can get them much cheaper now.

22" WS like mine only capable of 720p but most 24"s are 1080p, and lots of them even just have HDMI input so you don't even need a converter

Size doesn't really matter to me....just sit closer, plus if you need a keyboard etc better to have a desk than a coffee table anyway

Plus you could just get an extremely large LCD monitor, like the 27" here:
http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/product ... l=en&s=bsd
Good quality (one of the only things that Dell make that is) and you'll have a big ass screen for other stuff, like music production! :D
And just use a HDTV card/usb from ur comp for tv and stuff I guess

Just a thought

Get anything that is at least:

LCD > Plasma (Especially for console gaming)
1080p (FullHD) (Playstations naturally run in 1080p)
100hz (Japan made is best)

Go for something over 46" - if you buy anything smaller you'll regret it later :)

Sounds like alot of work dude !
Good idea , but we have kids and want to splurge seeing as we dont get out much. And want to go as big as possible for our price range.
The PS3 is just an extra for a bit of gaming and blueray.

we have a Sony bravia 40" 1080p LCD (courtessy of quick) and it OWNS....

direckt> viewing angle is not an issue with new LCDs really, the blacks are a little washed out on our screen but the model up from ours has fixed this issue apparently. doesn't wreck the experience of full HD ps3 and/or full HD TV broadcast.

DO NOT get a non full hd non 1080p screen whatever you do. size is not really the issue as it depends on the space you are puting it in really (a 50" is really silly in a bedsit for example :P). Must have full 1080p to reap the benefits of PS3.

As the next-gen parade continues at E3, many people have stopped by to comment on their opinion of Sony's upcoming console after it was revealed that at least two of the upcoming titles would definitely be running at 720p, not the 1080p Sony has been touting as the true definition of HD. Just to clarify, no one has suggested that PS3 would not be able to output games at 1080p (well, no one suggested it until Sony revealed the $499 model would be without HDMI anyway).

After all that, IGN took a look around and has only found two games on display targeting 1080p. The upscaled-GT4 demo Gran Turismo HD, and Wardevil, showing a real-time tech demo but non-playable. It is likely that if you have a TV that can accept a 1080p input the PS3 will be able to upscale games rendered at 720p or 1080i to match, just like the Xbox 360 does. How soon until the first major native 1920x1080 game hits? That still remains to be seen

I don't know of any ps3 games that run in 1080p.. they are all upscaled from 720 as far as I know
The blu-ray players are just too slow (16x slower than the dvd player on the xbox360) to transmit that much data.

MGS4 says 1080p on the back, as do a few others, but yeah could just be upscaled from 720p

And yeah loading times are a bit annoying as it is for 720p off bluray so 1080 would be crazy

Actually, what about Super Stardust HD? http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=77354

"Super Stardust HD lives up to the latter part of its name by rendering everything in 1080p with no hint of slowdown - even when the screen is ram-packed with enemy spacecraft, RSX-fuelled gunfire and a meteor storm's worth of unexploded asteroids. Considering the amount of activity on-screen, it's a hugely impressive technical achievement for the PS3 and the best use of 1080p since Ridge Racer 7."

Let's get this clear

more inches on the screen = larger penis.

Marketing at its best.

Yeah, technically they ARE outputting a 1080p signal, but the actual PS3 just renders a 720p image and upscales it. Cheeky.

They use older model samsung/sony panels in their TVs so while they may not be the latest tech they are still good quality.
The panels at least.

There are new ones that send a signal to your digital receiver.
So it's like you have an additional channel.. don't know much about them though.

A mate of mine at work said to hold tight, a lot of Plasmas are produced in Korea - currently, Korea has exceeded supply, meaning there is a "glut" of Plasmas about to hit the market.

Expect to see more prices under 2K shortly.

The latest technology to come out that beats both plasma + LCD in lifespan, power use + heat, contrast + clarity + colour is laser TVs. I'd never heard of them until I saw one recommended in Time Magazine's Top 10 Gadgets List for 2008 and did a bit of reading up them... Mitsubishi have just released one which is currently quite expensive, but they expect the price to drop pretty quickly as more come out:

"At present the only LaserVue TV available is a 65-inch model, costing $7,000." - That's actually pretty comparable to lcd's of the same size.. go much bigger than 52" and they get real pricey.

There's also the O-LED tv's on the horizon, super lightweight, super thin, flexible, higher contrast ratio.

http://www.oled-display.net/oled-television

But going to be mega expensive for at least 5 years..

Nice, didn't realise LCDs were still so expensive.

I read somewhere OLED had been ruled out by a few manufacturers recently due to it just being too expensive compared to other methods, although I guess because it's flexible it'll probably have other applications apart from just consumer TVs.

FYI, did some research when I was working for HT and found out Samsung actually manufacture monitors and such for the likes of Sony, HP, IBM...so really there's no reason to go for any other brand if it's a comparable product.

Also I think Samsung is the only company that has a No Dead Pixels Policy...if you have ANY dead pixels, they replace it. I know this is with LCD monitors but not sure if it's carried over to all visual equipment.

They jump like 3k when going from 50" to 60", pretty nuts. You could just buy 2 50" instead..
