single speed ftw imo... I hate gears, never use them anyway even if a bike has them.. I just use the highest gear and leave it set.

having the fixed wheel aspect is a problem. fixed wheel in the city can be very dangerous, it's sorta ok for experienced riders who have the strength to control them but in the wrong hands they are hazards.

all in all i don't have a problem with the bikes, but yeh like any fad its been victimsed by its own success.

I love my bike. Smashed K's. Fad for some, love for others. Cycling beats tramming.

yeah absolutely i love my bike. single speed is great. so simple. easy to service and keep running.

melbourne's pretty flat. i'd rather be on a simple nicely made bike than one with millions of shocks and stupid bits for offroad riding, when all i'm ever likely to do is jump off a kerb.

It's just going to make distros include brakes and reflectors and bells etc with the bikes, custom built and track bikes are not affected. it's still all up to the individual anyway. You certainly dont need a rear brake at all if you're riding fixed however my front brake gets a hell of a workout (except when it's wet hehe)

Generally people who are riding without standard brakes are not going to be riding dangerously anyway and more often than not they are going to be fairly experienced riders so they know what it takes to stop. If you're on a mountain bike and someone runs out in front of you and you brake too hard on your disc brakes you're going over the handlebars.

Fixed gear bikes without caliper brakes are not brakeless, they have a brake. Just like my BMX i had when i was a kid only had a back pedal brake.

Yeah i know. maybe more like cars with just a handbrake. They're nowhere near as effective as normal caliper breaks. If your pedals aren't in the right position, you can't stop straight away, you still have to do half a pedal to break properly.
IMO they're far more dangerous than normal bikes.

You need to ride one before you can judge

i can skid stop left and right, takes about half a second for your feet to be in the right position. There are far more dangerous things on the road and they're mostly pedestrians with no regard for road safety or or shared paths.

I owned bmx bikes when i was younger. I remember how the breaks were shitty. And in that half a second you could easily stack into a pedestrian or car. Admit it ya hipster they aren't as effective as caliper breaks

It is def a fad, but hey at least a healthy fad, and not really offensive....

I heart my bike, jsut a plain old thing, nothing flash, but currently sticking stickers all over it, to make it my own...

I do however hope this fad does lead to an overall INCREASE in the number of people who see push bikes - of ANY kind - as a viable mode of transport other than PT or cars, then if that happens i would be one happy chick!

Need a carton of milk, don't get in your car or on the tram jump on a bike, need to go to teh supermarket - jump on your bike peoples.

I want to see a movement AWAY from lycra clad Tour De France wannabe's to normal everyday people getting from A to B....

When did fixies come back in? I used to ride a bright red one with upside down handlebars when I was about 14... Is it still cool for them to look like that or is it something else now?

Either way, bikes are like cars to me. If it gets you from A to B (and isn't too dangerous or environmentally damaging) then who gives a flying fuck? Each to their own...
