fabric dead ?

Post by menace »

Buzzin' Fly Records IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY COMMENT FROM FABRIC I AM POSTING THIS TO EXPLAIN WHY I INADVERTENTLY ENDED UP AT THE CENTRE OF A TWITTER FIRESTORM YESTERDAY, AND TO ANSWER SOME OF THE UNFAIR ATTACKS NOW BEING POSTED ABOUT ME

yesterday afternoon i received an email from a senior figure at the heart of the fabric organization. it said:

"As of earlier this week fabric and matter went into administration and all staff were made redundant. Am now in the position that am looking for a possible vacancy, if you have one, please take a look over my CV and cover letter attached or if you know of any vacancies out there, if you could pass my CV on that would be much appreciated."

i was shocked. i wanted immediate corroboration. i went onto twitter and said as plainly as i could: 'i have been told both matter and fabric have gone into administration' and shortly after 'all staff have been made redundant'. i expected people to start saying 'oh, yes, i KNOW, isn't it terrible' and an open discussion on the situation could have started.

instead, it all kicked off. i suddenly realised i was the first person to mention it.

i got back to the guy from fabric to ask for more information. by then someone had already alerted him to my tweets. he sent me screen-grabs of my comments and accused me of being 'unsympathetic' and lacking in discretion. i was unaware any discretion was required as he had not asked for any at any point in his straightforward factual message, but i apologised if my tweets had come across as unsympathetic. they were, i thought, simply re-stating the simple facts he had told me.

i have been through the experience of meltdown in clubland before (neighbourhood, amato) and i have lost money and seen people lose jobs so i am sympathetic to the people at the sharp end when things like this happen. as a result, within 3 hours of first posting them i had deleted my tweets - at the guy from fabric's request - and posted an apology for inadvertently revealing news that i thought others knew already.

even so, i have now become victim of some fairly vicious attacks on both twitter and other forums (resident advisor, for example) for being a shit-stirrer, so in the absence of a statement from fabric today, i am forced to reveal this whole story in the hope it goes some way to exonerating me.

i am not a gossip-monger. i was as shocked as the next person. i simply wanted to share the news with others and express the regret and surprise we all feel.

and for all those hundreds of people who started following me on twitter yesterday in the hope of some more clubland titillation, you can wind your necks back in now. if you want thrills, perhaps you should try asking fabric.

yours

ben watt

Yes.

The End, The Cross, The Key, Matter, Fabric.

All now gone. Kids dont want to rave all night anymore.

How Fabric managed to fuck it all up with Matter is anyone's guess tbh.

London is all about the mini-hipster bars and rock music these days, much like Melbourne.

Hipsters killing it for the scene.

if it wasnt gossiping then it was at the very least pretty naive behaviour from ben watt imo. how many people post something on twitter after receiving a private email? silly.

shame about fabric too, but things change and things move on. sometimes something has to die for something else better to come along and take its place.

i find it unbelievable that fabric could shut as well.
the times i was there there were line ups you would be in for 3 to 4 hours just to get in.

sounds like london is falling down. what was it about ministry getting knocked down for apartments as well?

Whole thing blown out of proportion tbh. Agree naive of Ben Watt, i'm not surprised Fabric admin would be pissed.

Jus got back from Fabric. Hype, Hazard, Bukem, Conrad, Breakage, Taxman...Place reminded me of Cheeky Monkey in Byron Bay! Very well run club. Heaps of efficient staff. Sound was horrible. I tell you. When Heartical is tuned well beats the pants off Fabric. I thought sound there was gunna be sick. Jus no bass. Room 2 sounded better than room 1. I've heard Roxanne sound better than Room 1. Anyways, I think my clubbing days are over. On a side note. Pendulum are SOOO big here. It is amazing. BBC Big Weekend here was crazy big. And tonight they played at Wembley Stadium or some shit. And they supporting Tiesto. They all over the radio here too. It's really is amazing.

was pretty shit last time i went in 2006, heard it had got worse since too...was amazing for a good few years tho...smoking ban didnt help i dont think, not being able to smoke a zoot inside, major par! and much as it might seem strange, crackheads always add a bit of amusement so when they couldnt smoke either they fucked off elsewhere and it all seemed a bit too nice and safe

dam shame still tho, lineups were immense in so many genre's

i managed to poke my head in quite a few times..

the only thing that made it lose any appeal was the smoking ban.. but that's across the board fucked clubs everywhere.

yeah it has totally. especially in places that can't adapt to integrate a smoking area like The End.

I always preferred the End over Fabric. Better sound system, more open plan etc. Soon as the smoking ban came in it ruined the club. Massive cues to go back out the front door like battery hens to smoke a cig could take an hour. Lame.

Spot on there. I reckon it was totally overrated, too full of wankers and not a fun clubbing experience at all.

and to Flip :smt006 it's not that I'm jaded I just know what kind of night out I like to have and don't feel the pull of huge 'super' clubs.

ok maybe I am jaded... must be the old age showing :clock:

Nah, you can still have the thought and not be jaded. Id prolly feel the same way that I do here, it would just be disguised in the excitement of being in another country and being at that club finally. The place, not the experience.

Just because someone might not enjoy being squashed into a stuffy space with loads of sweaty people leaning on you and the like, doesnt make you jaded imo. Makes you someone who doesnt enjoy crowds and stuff. :D
