I drank a mix of Carlton, M.B. and V.B. for the first time in ages and I felt a bit sad for the poor souls who have these beers regularly and don't know the (potential) greatness of a good homebrew. Of course, a bad brew can be devastating.

Just got a package from my HBS last week that contained:
*James Squire Porter clone ingredients pack (mmmmmmm)
*Malt Shovel Pale ale cansx2 (malt shovel stuff is expensive but well worth it)
*Ingredients for a 10.9% brew (barley wine)

Last week I bottled "The Winebanana" (the name is from a stupid misunderstanding of a breed of dog). At the moment "The Goose" (a tribute to BMX Bandits) cider is almost finished fermenting.

wouldn't mind getting into homebrewing...

anyway...

my brother is right into the homebrewing and has an amazing kit. he's just got a job in lebanon for 5 months and so we're taking over the brewing.

went around to his place on the weekend and he ran us through our first brew. drinking a few from his previous brews while we were at it. we drove it home very carefully strapped in with the seatbelt on the back seat.

i can't really believe how easy it is to make. lots of steps along the way and i can see how if you get one wrong it could really throw everything off but overall it seems pretty simple.

i can see myself getting into this!!

Place I'm living has everything set up so perfectly. Actually using purified rain water from the tank on top of the shed. Drank a bottle of 2 year old stuff on the weekend. Had a few leaves in the mix. :sofukingdrunk:

Speaking of Fent's homebrew... where's my free bottle for doing the label comp thingy a moth or so ago?

we just bottled our first cider a couple of weeks ago.

we have done about 5 brews in our new house. the last one is amazing.

tastes almost like a little creatures.

hops make all the difference.

the blackrock tins from NZ are quality too.

i want to get a small bar fridge without the freezer so i can setup a couple of kegs in it. like fents has.

I like beer that comes from a can..
and doesn't end up back in some kind of can..

Beer from a can = nasty! Unless you're a fan of that 'aluminium' taste. It's also been proven that can's are more porous than glass, ie. they let more air in/out - resulting in a less fresh beer than in a bottle.

Brown coloured glass is the best for filtering out the suns rays that can damage beer, then green and then the crappy clear bottles.

The worst of all are the plastic bottles, especially when combined with Carlton Cold. That stuff is for underage drinking only.

Hahn Premium is good!

I wanna do home brew too, but I live in a flat and I hear it stinks your place out.

cool. yeah - we just used regular water from the tap but i want to check it out with using other types of water. purified ones etc.

excellent! yeah, we cooked up some hops for the one we did on the weekend... really looking forward to tasting it.

yeah - we have it outside, under cover though. it's not ideal as the temperature will fluctuate a bit and as it will get colder than you really want it to it may take a little longer until we rack it (so i've been told )

it's better than having it inside though as it's just too warm. if you have a spare room that's unheated or a garage or something i believe that would be ideal...

preeeeety cold for it. yeast stops working below like 15 degrees. it was 3 this morning. yeast go to sleep i would say.

sure once you have the yeast in, it tries its hardest to stay around the temp that you had it when the yeast was put in (cos its a chemical reaction it creates heat) but even inside it was hard to keep it above 18 degrees. the cider had to ferment for almost 3 weeks (even then i dont think it was finihsed) veeery slow fermentation that.

it doesnt stink as much as you would think Direktor.
