"Bass" music / scene

Post by DBoy »

Notice this more and more in 2011 already.
We came up with so many sub-genres that only total blog geeks and forum trolls could keep up - so now we have come full circle and now just have one term for all our music...

broken beat = bass music??

so, would fidget and bassline house/electro fit into the "bassmusic" category?

 The beautiful thing about "Bass Music" as a generalisation is it can mean different things to different people. It ends all genre debate. It is like the word "Doof" was for trance and techno.

yeh man, he still plays out and occasionally on Rinse but definitely taken a step back
recent thing here from him http://www.factmag.com/2011/03/03/downl ... eatest-dj/

this always makes me laugh:

In 2005, Slimzee received what was thought to be the first ASBO of it's kind by being banned from any roof or building over four storeys without permission. Slimzee received a three-year conditional discharge at Thames Magistrates Court after admitting operating a pirate radio station and causing £10,000 of damage by erecting broadcast equipment.

This occured after being caught on CCTV prior to a broadcast on Rinse FM.

bass music is a crap name but I like the idea. its a rather wide-ranging concept TBH. I think Baobinga and crew pretty much coined it with their blog. Manchester crew represent.

except all music should have bass really, or rather, most does.

where do you draw the line? below 100hz?

perhaps sub bass music would be more appropriate? I digress.

The sounds of now, mostly. But also some of the recent past and a few vintage ones too as long as they have aged well.

the kind of sounds that actually have spaces between them.

hence liking more 'bass music', hip hop, folk music these days than 4/4 anything.

relentless sounds = heavy metal = gabba = anything like that = makes kitteh's brain hurt.

yeah I agree. I think contrast is important. and space.

it all depends what turns you on though innit. some people love guitars, other people like the saxaphone.

I think bass music is great because it embraces a wide ranging palette of influences and sounds.

its just unfortunate that a lot of it is very hit and miss for me, because either it isn't very well produced or has esoteric and unconventional song structures.

just like "intelligent" drum and bass its a bit of a abstract medium. I like hooks and stuff you can hum along to.

see I love the bagpipes! I'm half scottish though.

its a really impassioned sound, a tribal thing, a call to arms.

but then Tina is always giving me shit cos I tell her I dont like guitar music. Which I dont, most of the time. I'm so bored of it.

bagpipes are rad imo

my high school had a kick arse pipes and drums band that won bare competitions all the time

we were treated to a fanfare once a week at assembly in a concert hall with mad acoustics

most stirring sound hands down, even thinking about it gives me tingles.......machine gun drums and that drooooooooooooone

fucking love it

meh im sick of genres and dont use them anymore to describe music

i always use terms like "club music" and "bass music" to describe so many different genres cos in the end i dont give a fuck, its music and genres just put limitations and guidelines on it

that maybe just be me though haha
