the thread about earplugs
the thread about earplugs
Yep, this morning I went and got my ears tested at some place in East Melbourne, can't remember what it's called.. my girlfriend sorted it all out, she got hers tested too.
Not a bad place, Uni setup, had a student running the tests with a professional keeping check.
Sat in a sound proof booth, could hear my stomache churning and my throat jumping up and down, was so hungry.
Ran a whole series of tests, mainly short bursts of blips and blops over a range of frequencies and levels. The spoken word test was funny, you had to repeat the word being said, and because the volume was so low I dont know if I sounded crazy or correct.
Turns out I have perfect hearing, which is suprising since I live in headphones, nightclubs, and a record store. My ears are constantly being bashed. But, all good.
I got some custom ear plugs made, $220 with a -15dB reduction. I could have opted for the -25dB but thought -15dB should be sweet since I'll be wearing them with my headphones. They stuck this cotton ball in my ear attached to a string, then injected silicone into my ear canal which made my ear feel like it was about to burst, but had a cool ear impression to look at afterwards.
The student was a DJ too, so he understood where I was coming from, that helped a bit.
For any DJ or club goer, highly recommend you get the test done!
I'll post the joint later today when I speak to me woman.

Nah, I didnt have any suspicions, but thought since I work in noisy environments like, my whole waking life, I thought it would be a good idea to get them checked and have ear plugs made before I do do damage and become useless in the studio.
Also heard that my computer fans release low acoustic noise that can do damage to your ear while you sleep. I've had a computer switched on in my room since I can remember, so wanted to make sure that was sweet too.
Ya should have your ears checked every year or so minimum anyway if you're working in noisy environments.

No reason. I could never ever wear them whilst playing tho. I just cant imagine cueing up a track in headphones with ear plugs in. Plus my RPJ's cover my ears completley and block out heaps of noise.lynt wrote:Why -25dB?

Isn't that obvious...factory worker wrote:what worse having ringining in your ears and wandering if ou've done damage or getting them tested and maybe being able to protect future damage?
but if you don't know if there's a problem, then there is no problem...

everyone has a ringing in their ears to an extent. tinnitus is when the hairs in your ear canal have bent over innit??? that would suck.
about a year ago i had to get my ears tested in cbr for a new job. sounds the same as you guys, little room with the beep thing. i got a really good result for a guy (high freq response) which i was pretty pleased with....tho i dont listen to classical music much
anyway id like to hear a review on these musicians earplugs...ive always wanted to get a pair but never known where to get them done. i think shure make actual headphones that preform the same task as well as being headphones. most people that preform live @ large concerts use em.

Highly recommend Dr Briggs - he is my ear doctor and did my last op. Love his work! He also has an ear check thingy in his clinic which is near the old Mercy Hospital. Got to see a screenshot/photo thingy of my ear last time i was there, way cool!
Don't go to a doctor Robert Sherman, I may be bad for posting that but the guy is a money hungry bastard who has no bed side manner at all! Went through two ops with him and it was fricken horrible!

I think i need some earplugs...
tinitus has started on me.. erm.. im 20.. i think fuck is the right word to use here..
I actually blame it on all the equipment here.. not the music.. this fax machine goes off every hour, and also 24hours a day.. it has a high pitched ringing noise.. the computer fan makes a bad arsed noise, and there is something else under the table that makes a high pitched ringing noise constantly.. we are renovating the house as well.. and for the past few weeks, jus on the other side of my wall has been an air compressor on from 7-4 each day.. plus lots of sawing and banging and whatnot..
and on top of that.. im trying to make music.. hrm.. ok.. maybe i have it turned up 10db more than normal.. so. maybe it is the music.. but yeah.. i havent even been going out much lately.. so this shit is cos of what i do at home.. fook..
sorry bout the rant.. jus thought i would share.. (although sometimes im not sure how much of it is in my head, and how much is from all this crap in front of me.. cos i can be somewhere else and it doesnt seem so bad..
yep.. end rant fi sure now!

Nup.. I should have asked, but I'm sure it's on the packet.elysium wrote:out of interest, do you happen to know what the dB reduction is with the backyard variety crappy foam earlplugslynt wrote:I got some custom ear plugs made, $220 with a -15dB reduction. Gave them a work out over the weekend, nothing beats waking up with a clear head and no ringing ears. Seriously, it was like I didn't even go out.
Definately worth the money. Made me feel somewhat disoriented at first, a little distant from the vibe as its obviously a lot quieter... but the ability to hear people talking at normal conversation volume on the dancefloor is great. Really really really worth the money, and now I won't be deaf when I get older (here's hoping, anyway).
I have a new found passion for keeping my ears safe.
Go get some.

http://www.headphones.com.au/prod_one.p ... ctID=7#top
