not sure if you solved your problem to print a decent a0 I do this, make your working file at 300 dpi in a3. i use ps and save the file as a pdf so it doesn't rasterise anything. this seems to work even if i've used images which have lower than 300 dpi resolution at actual size in the image. though ...
