but yeah... its funny i have friends who just hear the odd rusko track on the radio or whatever and refer to anything with a similar bassline (even breaks/basslinehouse) as "dubsteppy" or "dubby"
but they're pretty clueless haha

I think there still are, I know there are.

They just get overlooked by all the whob whob whob brostep heavy metal ravers.

There's threads all about it on dubstep forum everyday.

the name dubstep does make sense if you listen to early dubstep, you can hear that it draws influences from both dub and two step.

no no no NO!

Any link between drum n bass and dubstep needs to be smashed against a fence, had all it's limbs broken in the most painful way possible and then be shot to death. Drum n bass and dubstep have no relation whasoever.

Dubstep should not be allowed at drum n bass gigs... period. dubstep is for dubstep gigs, drum n bass is for drum n bass gigs. Hearing dubstep when I go out to listen to dnb just about ruins the whole night. People need to realise they are two seperate genres that clash so badly it hurts my head. They do not go together in any way, shape or form.

There seems to be a resurgence of two step happening as well which is very welcome imo - I love the intimate and experimental vibes coming from there which the stadium sized dubstep/rock tunes are lacking.

a lot of deep dubstep is just dub.
It's just put into the dubstep category because its cool and kids will buy it, and there's no dub category on online mp3 shops

it comes about in multiple forms ... listen to early (2004-2005) dubstep and it's basically dubbed-out twostep. dark, reductionist, and the reverb turned up to 13 on the snare. it's more to do with dub as a process/aesthetic than as a sound, cf. dub techno.

if you want to keep stretching it, listen to 2007 dubstep, where every fucking tune was basically digidub with a jah sample. a lot of dnb producers have run up on it these days, some making sick tunes (seven, kryptic minds, benny page, etc), a lot making utter shit. and yes, some of it does really just sound like slowed-down dnb (even the youngsta & kryptic minds tune is way too rigid for me, sounds like dnb at 140), but i think you'll find most of that is not even close to what gets played out or represented at decent dubstep parties -- come out and see some day -- and has even less to do with dubstep as a genre than shit electro-house ripoffs have to do with breaks.

go listen to youngsta & task in 2005 and tell me that a) dub as a process is not involved in any way, and b) it sounds like slowed-down dnb. :)

Most Dubstep isn't dub, it's Dubstep..

Dub is a different genre all together

I reckon unfortunately they do.. dubstep being virtually half tempo to d+B.. Used as a brief beak or drop in the middle of a d+b set it is good for a minute or two. Chase and Status do it well..

BUUUUUt I agree - for too long in a d+b set, and you start to hear the punters talking, or looking toward the bar, or at their watches, or start texting etc, and you know the dj has misread how long to break up the set with a bit of half tempo stuff..

Keep em seperate.

One of the first Dubstep records I bought.

Came out July 2005.

Dubchild - Psychopath

Can you not hear any resemblance to jungle/dnb in this tune?

There are literally hundreds of tunes since with similar vibes, and this was released during the infancy of the genre. If you want more examples PM me and I can point you in the right direction.

I also want to point out that main rule to Dubstep is sub bass and/or bass heavy sounds. I think you would also agree that DnB no doubt sticks to this rule as well. To say they have no relation is very naïve.

If you don't like the side room playing Dubstep at a DnB gig simply stay away from there!!!

I don't see how a dubstep fan can rant about what dubstep is called when there's a sub-genre of dubstep called Funky, which is the antithesis of all things Funk.

If it was just side rooms I never would of noticed but uuuh... it rarely is. It's usually in the whackest order possible like... dubstep, HYPER JUMP UP dnb, mellow dubstep, dnb, jungle.

Should be dubstep till the people show up then drum n bass for the rest of the night or no dubstep at all. lol. Have a gig for your dubstep. Have a gig for your dnb. Don't mix them it's so horrible. Dubstep is for listening to at home imo. It doesn't really work for gigs. But yeah...

Wobble is a good example... probably the best example in Melbourne that's regular but it happens a lot. Shock One at the Croft was the first time I saw it happen but yeah it's becoming a regular oocurence at gigs, in studio mixes and moreso in the uk was my experience. Maybe I'm just terriotorial?! Haha. Not wanting to start anything really I dunno why I'm even saying this to be honest. Just it's been really getting on my nerves more and more as it's happened more frequently.

Also, Eden and wobble crew if you read this, don't hit me I have much love. :P

yeah, asc would definitely smash rusko in a rave. depends on the kind of dnb and the kind of dubstep (tbh i don't understand how you can get from a rusko tune to shocking out so hard you put your face through a wall ... kids these days, but horses for courses i guess), so it's a fairly pointless statement.
