Bang!

This one is our biggest one yet.

Too Much! are back once again bringing you more forward thinking music.

Our next instalment features Untold. This is set to be one hell of a party.

/////UNTOLD//////

There are few producers who have an indelible audio stamp. Jack Dunning aka Untold is one of the lucky few. His sound is more than a trademark snare or a catchy vocal snippet, it’s a sonic DNA that mutates beyond genre, transcends time barriers and will continue to defy categorization in perpetuity. He is a unique talent.
Having produced music in a bedroom set up for years as a young teenager, a draining stint of higher education forced him to down tools “an Electronic Music degree ruined my enjoyment of writing for ages”, Jack remembers. But these were just years of hibernation and the time to develop a career in graphic design that put food on the table. The catalyst for a musical renaissance came in 2005 after a lesson in sub bass at the then fledgling DMZ, the world’s most important dubstep night.
“It was the purity of the atmosphere and the sub bass that got me. Everyone in the room seemed totally locked on to each tune, there was a crazy energy in the place. After going to my first dance at Third Base I knew I had to start writing music again.”
Picked up in early 2008 by Hessle Audio, Jack’s Kingdom EP was the third release on the then fledgling imprint, introduced a musical palate that was both nuanced and understated but with bags of bass weight. Here were the early indicators of what was to become a fierce sonic arsenal – the mutant, blunt edges of his synth play, an intricate tapestry of detail which added depth and colour barely audible to even to the geekiest of listeners.
By early 2009, Jack had been hammering a selection of awesomely anachronistic but idiosyncratic music on CDR; fuel for an ever-growing DJ schedule. For those that were lucky enough to be caught in a rave when the awkward, staccato bleeps of Anaconda assaulted the eardrums, you knew this was an artist to take 100% seriously. Played by DJ’s spanning genres, countries and vast age groups, this 12” release on the Hessle Audio label showed the electronic world they had a new artist with a highly distinctive sound to get their teeth into.
2009 continued to unfold with a slew of essential remixes for 2nd Drop and Planet Mu, alongside original material on Hotflush and Brainmath. Jack’s largest body of work to date has been the six track EP on his own Hemlock label, which he runs with his mate Andy. The Gonna Work Out Fine Ep was a collection of tracks that fearlessly pushed the genre boundaries and could be seen gazing off into the near future of progressive dancefloors and vinyl connoisseurs collections everywhere. Stilted rhythms met jilted synths and squashed drums with the ever-present specter of grime lurking on the peripheries: unarguable forward thinking music. But this EP also provided an insight into Jack’s wider music palate. You can hear classic house in the keys of Don’t Know Don’t Care and Never Went Away, the ravey synths of later day hardcore and jungle on Palamino. But it’s not always about looking back. Exploration of various bpms frequently creates new hybrids, and the low-fi swing of No One Likes A Smart Arse demonstrates his twisted take on dark garage and the funky skeleton of Palamino offsets the aforementioned nostalgic melodies.
2010 holds further promise. More releases on Hemlock of his own material is a given, whilst he continues to show his A&R spurs with the likes of Mount Kimbe, James Blake, Fantastic Mr Fox and Ramadanman gracing the label. And watch out for a forthcoming remix of DJ Eastwood’s U Aint Ready on No Hats No Hoods, a classic example of why Untold is set to bamboozle and delight dancefloors in equal measure from 2010 onwards.

I don't want to be topical about this, but will risk it. For me Rama just played all over the shop without any thread to it (and yeah the mc splintered things further).

The best 'dubstep' at the mo is mostly happenining outside the obvious dubstep trend of the past. Rama is a huge part of that. His releases in 2010 are like how unique Untold's were in 2009. But his dj set was just not adventurous.

nic, dunno if your comment was directed at me. Just in case it was I have to explain a bit - because I'm not the purist crying type.

The playing of varied styles is positive - but whilst Rama did that it doesn't automatically mean that he did it in a coherent way with great tune selection or dj'ing technique.

I do expect Untold to shift about, pulling tunes from diff spaces/influences. But based on the mixes he's put out his taste is so on it. And his hemlock label has had such consistent quality it's scary (double a-side stuff). Witness the new Cosmin TRG.

Praps I should never have linked the Rama event to this great Untold news. It's just that I view both producers as making some of the best indefinable stuff of late so expectations be high.

yeah pretty much agree on all the comments regarding rama.. was all over the shop in terms of set from start to finish. it just didnt quite flow well, regardless of tune selection

comparing someone similar who came out recently for example was scuba. now his set was constructed well from beginning to end...going from sub genre to sub genre. on point and just flowed better with great tunes to boot

Big ups to every one for the feedback we often ask but only get people kissing our assess (not that we don’t mind that aswell). For me I loved Ramadanmans set. I loved the fact that he surprised everyone and played a heap of house and I loved the fact it was a bit all over the place and tbh the crowd did seem to beloving it.

I also felt Lowqui suited really well, not to over the top with the mcing and he did have breaks in between (maybe Melbourne just don’t have the same ethos as London and the UK in general with mcs?)

Having said all this I can see where people were coming from (especially since it was advertised as a dubstep/futurebeats type night. I was surprised at what Ramadanman played and I do think it turned some people off (I would however book him again in an instant).

This party we will be advertising differently as we do expect a broad range of sounds to be played, and it is a direction that I want to take Too Much! In. I personally want it to be a dubstep party at heart but I want it to feature heaps of different genres that have both influenced and been influenced by dubstep. For me dubstep has become less about half time snare boom tish womp womp womp and more about sub-driven music of any kind…. Any ways I am starting to rant so I will finish.

This party is going to have a limited amount of early birds at $20 and then presales will be $30.

The total ticket sales will be 220 with 25 on the door, if Ramadanman was anything to go by this will sell out.

JUST ADDED TO THE LINE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EGYPTRIXX (CAN)

Bio

With the tons of hyped up dance music that comes out these days, it's pretty hard to stand apart from the herd; not the case with Toronto's Egyptrixx. In just over one year, his distinct sonic aesthetic has become an acclaimed presence in underground music, garnering praise from heavyweight DJ's, including Bok Bok, Mary Ann Hobbs and Roska, and influential publications such as Fader, Xlr8r and The Wire.

All of his recent records have also seen regular radio play on BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM among others. His unique and energetic live sets are in-demand, with headlining gigs banked all over Europe and North America and a busy touring schedule in upcoming months.

He makes celestial club music; jeep music for a Saturn desert. There is an exhilarating right-but-wrong tension that all of Egyptrixx' tracks share - a shifting balance between melodic and dissonant, rapturous and antisocial. His releases continue to challenge the status quo and impress with a unique style informed by elements of techno, house, dubstep and pop music.

With critically acclaimed releases already out on Night Slugs and Ramp Recordings, and his forthcoming debut LP slated for an early 2011 release, the future looks bright for Egyptrixx.
