Afternoon/Evening Parties??

Post by ShiKung »

Yo Im to old to stay out late every weekend night these days, especially now i wake at 7am everyday.

Is there any early gigs on Fridays or Saturdays where i can go drink cheapish tap beer and listen to Djs that arent playing standard soulful random crowd music. Like Future music from any genre??

Or

Would anyone want something like this??

NB edited thread name to include evenings

Saturday afternoon gigs in summer I would be quite interested in. Sunday is no good because it could mean going to work hungover on Monday.

I found the aLive gigs that used to be on at the retreat a few summers ago to be bloody magnificent. Various electronic styles in a beer garden on saturday afternoons. Primo!!

Demands the right venue. Has to have outside and has to be comfortable.
"Outside" gig does not mean a small outside section with no sitting room.

Yeah Im thinking thou for a vibe like that that it might have to be isolated.

Ie in a park or near the beach or something, hard to get to for ALL of us maybe??

the psy and prog heads seem to be able to pull off those beach parties quite often in summer. lots of peeps.

totally depends on the venue tho yes. an arvo gig at miss libs for eg is just being inside a club during the arvo.

more of those heavy innit edinburgh gardens raves during the summer tbh.

I can get behind this. The main reason I don't go to parties any more is that I don't want to have to wait until 1 or 2am to see the act/DJ i paid to see.

Word. It's getting harder on these old bones. The will is there but the performance not so much.

The beach parties at half moon bay are total win. Try to get to them each year, and always have an amazing time.

Elwood spot is also good for parties, lots of grass, no neighbours, beach close by, great views. Been to a few things there and works well.

Eddy gardens always going to be good.

Problem with actual venues that have a great outside area and would be ideal for this concept is most of them are full of tossers. If you have a mad beer garden in a reasonable location the chances are you are successful to the point of being commercial and unlikely to put on a underground beat head party over summer. Take St Kilda Sea Baths for instance. Mad location and potential but only do house gigs. Section8 is probably the only venue that does it well, but tbh, not a big fan. Not always comfortable, especially with the 'stadium' style seating looking in on the pit.

The Belgin Beer Cafe in St Kilda Rd does live music on Sundays which is good - theyhave reggae from time to time and that always kicks - but again, the crowd is predictable.

Everyone I know who thinks about doing a park party reaches a similar point in planning. do we go rennagade and risk the shut down, or if we get the permit where do we stop with planning? When does it become more like a gig where you are going to need infrastructure and it become unmanagable...

i've considered it dBoy, boathouse is closed until the 20th of this month, before then it's fair game. not a hope in hell of yarra giving anyone a permit to do anything there so not worth the headache even bothering contacting them about it. last crew i know who contacted Yarra re music in a park were told they'd have to pay up $3000 for insurance and even then if there were complaints they would shut you down, mind you that was for an event at Edinborough gardens and it seems people get away with quite a bit down there.

you'd be surprised man, they're actually pretty easy going. I put on one a few weeks back, about 100 people at busiest i reckon, jacked the electricity out of the building next to the skate bowl, no dramas at all

Was gonna do another in a few weeks which was looking to be much bigger (since postponed it for other reasons) and contacted Yarra, had a long conversation with the guy responsible for Edinburgh Gardens. Told him straight up we had one a couple weeks back with no permit and if we did it again but bigger whats the chances of getting shut down / fined. He was pretty cool and said its pot luck really. The main gripe is the noise if someone complains but they would in most cases just ask you to turn it down as a first warning (as they did with Heavy innit one last year)...and thats with or without a permit. The permit he said is if you know they'll be over 30 people, costs all up around $250ish and he said he saw absolutely no issue with granting it. I asked about drinking etc, he said again no issue, thats just each individuals responsibility.

To be honest, if it was my sound system id just go ahead and do it without a permit again, as long as you dont bring the Heartical down you're mostly gonna be cool

Glad I'm not the only one.

Bar with good beer garden is ideal - they'll need to be struggling for numbers to agree to giving you use but I'm sure there are a few of those around.

Prefer Saturdays.

Norfside (that includes CBD) essential.

Done properly, I have no doubt this would take off.

we have had a number of great gigs here in the afternoons. boxing day the last two years has been awesome, for example.

yes, the backroom is not the most inviting space when its a sunny day outside, but everyone smokes on the balcony anyhow.

plus, most beer gardens have sound restrictions over and above what we do.

i work with what ive got yeh.

It would be great if the dj could see the balcony bit, but such is life. I reckon that party will be great!
