Gig flyer appreciation thread.

Post by andy_hoffman »

Some mad effort goes into some of melbourne's gig flyers and there's not much appreciation given to the designers IMO. Anyway just thought i'd start a thread so people can post some of their favourite flyers.

I'm gonna start with my 2 favourite flyers so far this year.

Not sure who did the design work on this one but there's alot of work gone into this. Have to say this is one of my favourite of all time i think. Great theme to work with and didn't hold back at all. BIGUPS!!
Image

And flip.. another quality piece of art here. Once again not holding back on the theme. Love your work buddy!

[i am not a fan of the City Of Lost Children flyer. I think for a flyer to be good it has to convey a message about the music or be some sort of play on the dj's name etc. The Meat Katie one is a great example of this. The City Of Lost Children flyer for me doesn't really convey that, it kind of looks like it is advertising a computer game.

I have always thought our flyer's were pretty good compared to most and they have had a fairly consistent branding.

This is my current favourite

Thanks Andy, and everyone else.. its very encouraging to hear this, when im just having fun :D

i could pull up a million flyers and designs for parties over the years cause ive got a massive box full of them. My favourites used to be the old Hardware parties 'War of the Worlds..' Not only did they have flyers though, but whole campaigns or CDs, brochures, posters, animations, etc. and everything used to be used to the full potential to decor the venue with the same style, and it looked and felt amazing. I've got stuff somewhere, I'll pull it up.

I really like the city of lost children flyer. I think the level of detail it goes into to create a visual world give the party and identity before you're even there. It gets people excited and massively familiar with the party, so when they walk in and see in a consistant decor with the flyer and collateral, the experience of the night will burn into their memory without even hearing any music.

I'm not really with you on the message to music theme petey.. i think some of the best things can be seperated. i think the fabric design team are a good example of this, having some of the most ambigiuous flyers and cds and so on, that bring an extra level of depth and personality to the music.

but saying that, your flyers have a level of consistancy that no other crew does in melbourne.. i'm always a fan.. and love the current ikonika one.. :)

have to give props to BBA flyers as well.. never a bad one, classic rave flyer style too.. :)

enough design nerd rant from me, i'll scour the mac for some photos..

Maybe it just my marketing mind but if your flyers don't say somthing about your brand then they are somewhat useless. The City Of Lost Children one to me doesn't really say anything other than X Box game rip off (the one where you go into that city underwater). Maybe it does work though as the line up is random as

Well it would look a bit shit if the name of the event was The City of Lost Children and the poster didn't relate to that theme in any way... don't you think? Bass Jump posters were great and were obviously based around base jumping images. Makes sense to me anyway.

the children of the lost bass flyer is on a steampunk tip which is pretty cool IMO.

maybe I'm only saying that because its exactly the vibe I'm going for with my label as well.

maybe its just too forward-thinking/niche/exclusive/nerdy/gash?

I remember seeing the movie at the Astor in 1995. It was amazing and back then I'd never seen anything like it. It blew my mind. The flyer seems influenced by the Movie.
