fooishbar wrote:pete & oli are pretty much on point ... it's really not my thing, more power to people who make/listen to it and enjoy it, at least they're having a good time and it keeps them off the streets or whatever.

what shits me off tho is that it's taken over dubstep to the extent that you can barely do anything else at 140bpm these days, and that shit bandwagon promoters who don't give a flying fuck are starting to run the entire genre in melbourne into the ground. saturate the city with the lowest common denominator of one single sound, getting harder/faster/filthier all the time. don't bother spending any time trying to make sure it'll be good for a couple of years time - by that stage the sound will be at a complete dead end anyway and they'll find another genre to run into the ground. oh well, in the meantime at least you've filled the club and your pockets.

seems to be exactly what happened to dnb/breaks, right down to the same venue. ha.

so yeah, normally i'd ignore the music and just live and let live but it pretty much seems to sum up all that's wrong with dubstep and all that's going to make sure it's dead in a couple of years.

(to be clear, i'm not talking about heavy innit here and everyone who knows me knows that's the case.)

(ps: i'd have to shave my beard off if i wasn't grumpy and jaded, all part of the look yo.)
 :scripteef:

people need to describe there parties either as dubstep or brostep
there is a difference as flux has shown us
i hate the broshitstep with a passion and you wont be seeing me off my tits at any of these so called dubstep nights
the genre has finally split

You guys are just a repeat argument of the breaks vs progressive breaks, or tech vs minimal, etc, etc.
Lets face it - every genre eventually shits itself. A sub-genre like dubstep has had a pretty good run - but you know things are fucked when things get truly saturated, the general standard of production quality drops, and the more commercial variety of clubs and promoters repeatedly try to whip that dead horse right into the ground. You know things are REALLY fucked when you have the equivalent of a Kid Kenobi or John Course type wanker that supposedly becomes the representitive of your genre. I'm not familiar enough with your music to know if that has happened yet. Has it happened? And if you have a 'Ministry of Sound' album made for your genre, well, it's all finally and completely fucked. Next thing you know Fitzy and Wippa will be playing your genre on Nova.
It's been a good innings fella's - but it looks like it may be coming to a close to me? Of course, there will be the stalwarts who push it for the next 5 years - and good luck for trying. But right here is where you hang up your DJ bag, have kids and buy a choc labrador.
The great never-ending electronic music wheel spins again, lands on something, spins again, repeat.
It may be a while before it lands on you guys again, but all the best in the meantime :smt023

I promise on my mothers soul I didn't know that.
I don't follow dubstep at all.

Yep, seems you guys are fucked. Sheesh, they've raped your genre almost as bad as they raped breaks.
Admittedly tho - would be good to see dancefloors rocking again with fast, aggressive, futuristic sounds.
It's quite a possibility that in the next few years both breaks and d&b could make a major comeback imo.

its nearly impossible to predict whats going to happen with this genre because its exposure has sky rocketed so quickly and in my eyes hasnt had chance to settle yet.

Not everyone might agree but Im really strong on the "any publicity is good publicity" model and exposing dubstep is vital to the growth and existence of the genre. tunes like bass cannon might not be your/my cup of tea but if it draws 300 kids to a club and leaves a lasting impression on 25 then fucking happy days in my eyes.

we cant stop the bass cannon beats, but we can embrace them and help educate all these new wide eyed kids coming to listen to this genre about all the other amazing styles dubstep can produce

I'm interested to see if dubstep follows the same path as jungle did when it blew up mainstream in the mid 90s. In terms of where the classic sound of dubstep will go, I like to think it may go down the darker route travelled by jungle/dnb through the late 90's, and it would be all too fitting since it was originally a very similar dark, stripped, minimal sound pre-midnight request line.
Here's an interesting article from back in the day on the split of jungle into 'intelligent' and 'hardstep' - check it out, I think there might be some parallels as dubstep recoils from it's pop status.

I'm not sure it was as quick as you perceive.. .it's been 5 years since Skream first came out here, and over 2 yeras since him and benga packed out the hifi bar to the rafters.. Freq Nasty and Scratch Perverts were smashing dubstep to 5000 people at Parklife 2007 too... That was totally awesome actually.

I dont get Boddika at all.. it sounds exactly like old skool warehouse rave did in the 1990's. (think Harthouse, or Rising High records)

Really not that exciting, and definitely not for the dancefloor. I mean the synth in that one you just posted Fooishbar, come on man. Thats terrible.

A real case of style over content if ever I heard one. I mean if we're reverting to bad electro and saying thats the next big thing then the game really is over lol.

I'll be in the corner doing gunfingers to treble cannon.

why, because I've expressed my opinion? its not the end of the world man. It irks me because I keep reading about Boddika on the internet, about how great his music is, and then I listen to it and I think it sounds dull.

No drama at all, no offense intended to anyone. :)

yes well I think much like this bass cannon tune that has polarised people's opinion - music that does that, like art, is usually pretty effective.

if people are talking about it, even if they're slagging it off, thats probably a good thing.

Actually when you think about it those girls do kind of represent current "dubstep";

skinny white scrags with no soul, groove or anything remotely funky about them.

They are entertaining for about 5 seconds and essentially hollow and uninteresting.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Geez...

Also, the thing I find interesting about this thread has nothing to do with the music... Like I'm not a fan of skrillex or flux pavillion or anything like that but I don't really have a problem with it... I couldn't be bothered with that crap.

People talk about ministry of sound n stuff... That can ONLY be good for the genre as a whole, just cause those sounds are developing doesn't mean other subgenres will suffer, in fact it will probably bring popularity...

This is exactly the same as the whole Pendulum thing... people forget their success kept a lot of djs eating when dnb otherwise probably would of close to died altogether...

Anyway, didn't really wanna post in here I think I'm sleep-typing lol

good thread. :teef:

same shit, different genre. the cycles of underground - radio play - popular - jaded 'pioneers' - kids love it a while - then onto the next big (read- underground/new/revolutionary) thing.

give it a couple years and it will be back to being niche again, and those pushing/playing/promoting what they love will still be doing it, whether their parties have 20 people or 2000 people.

I'll be more interested to see who's tracks we are listening to in 10 years time. What tracks actually speak for the generation & resonate with future generations. Where are the Beatles, the Nirvana, the Doors of the last 10 years? Time will tell i guess...
but I'm willing to bet $10 it ain't gonna be feckin footcrab ;)

photos from the cookie monsta party last night show me a room full of hipster kids 10 years younger than most people here,
having a great time and with a decent female to male ratio...not my scene at all anymore, never was, but i still like some tearout for the music it is and that's it. Just not the parties that now go with it.

mah 2 cents.

It aint going to be Krafty Kuts either. Accidently listened to part of his new dubstep song from a link on Facebook - it made me want to gouge out my eardrums through its sheer lack of musicality and originality. Felt like I was trapped in the K-hole while the Plump DJ's played their most commercial drivel at 33rpm. Urrrrrrrggh.
Good to see that he has the ability to drop any semblance of musical integrity and make a flailing attempt at grabbing for the straws of near-fame by raping an already heavily raped sub-genre - catering to a small minorty, while hoping for record sales of any variety, at any cost - whether that cost be your scene, your genre's general reputation, or your hip pocket as a promoter/dj (which gets raped when his gig falls on the same night as yours).
He'll be touring here at least 4 times this year - make sure you're one of the gullible fucks who believes the promoters hype, and quickly fork out your $80 to see him spin records badly. :retzielikes:
