Dub Club Melbourne celebrates 5 years
Working closely with Heartical HiFi Outernational, the vision was to introduce to Melbourne an international style reggae and dub ‘soundsystem culture’. It took some time to find a suitable venue to do this until eventually we discovered a basement in the city which had once been a bank vault and was now converted into a bar. We then began to promote a regular event, aptly naming it ‘Basement Sessions’.
Basement Sessions was to be the first music event of its kind. The tradition of the reggae ‘soundsystem’ hadn’t been represented in this corner of the globe and the event has been crucial in teaching people about a movement that began in the ghettos of Kingston Jamaica over 50 years ago. Nowadays through migration, the baton has been passed from nation to nation - Australia no exception. We call it ‘roots and culture’.
