mrj wrote:i think the fact that George Bush was elected is far more proof of the principle that anybody can be elected president, than Obama is.

What we should be saying is you can have a history of cocaine use. you can have a track record of failures in life and in business. you can be close to illiterate and such a poor public presenter that its a wonder you managed to make it through all those debates without setting your own podium on fire. You can be a complete retard backwards moronic son of a bitch. But even YOU can be president. YES YOU CAN.

I think the concept that anybody can be elected president is a terrifying notion. I wouldn't want "anyone". I would want a leader who is so fucking smart, so fucking talented, so fucking passionate, experienced, and hard working that when they speak the blow the bricks off buildings.

The problem with the past eight years is we have had an anybody in the white house. Thank god it looks like we finally might have a somebody instead.
Well said ;)

Well put. There was Reagan.

I saw Obama on Oprah quite some time ago (think it was shortly after he became senator...2004?). Instead of living the easy life with his wife and fambo in their lush digs, he spent 3 months living in a ghetto area within his electorate to see just how the lower class lived. He was in a commission style flat where there was no heating (winter of course) and he showered out of a hole in the wall. He'd go jogging every morning to survey the damage from the night before. When he went back home he instigated all manner of community programs to help the needy people to lift themselves up.

Now I can't see many politicians doing this sort of thing. Granted he went back home to his lush digs, but I reckon it's fucking commendable that he even thought to do such a thing let alone actually carry it out, at great risk to himself. I watched this, long before he announced he was running for Prez. When I heard he was running I was fucking thrilled. That kind of commitment is exactly what the little folk (ie: most of the people in America) really need right now.

So when I see this: I wouldn't want "anyone". I would want a leader who is so fucking smart, so fucking talented, so fucking passionate, experienced, and hard working that when they speak the blow the bricks off buildings.

...I think of Barak. I've never cared about politics so much as I have in the last 4 years.

^ yeah I heard about his background on Sunrise this morning. Good on him.

Pretty much raised without his father. Took out loans to put himself through college. Rejected the offer of a high paying job in law to work with the underprivileged.

Here's hoping he lives up to everyone's expectations and hopes.

Obama's obviously a big improvement from the last 8 years of fear, greed and war so I'm rapt that he got in, but give me Nader any day. That would mean real change.

I got all choked up looking at that.

Just heard that Obama's had some serious meetings with the country's intelligence agencies and I was thinking, can you imagine what it'd be like for him to all of a sudden get a look inside Pandora's Box?

fuck yeah, just imagine the shit you would learn, say what, you mean there ARE Aliens, we HAVE time travel thanks to the Philadelphia/Monbaulk project.
Would be like that Bill Hicks skit, where they roll the JFK shooting which is from an angle never seen before, looks like its from the grassy knoll "sooo, whats my agenda"

Did Hicks say that? I thought I saw some dude say that in a Penn and Teller re: Conspiracy Theories.

Totally though, I'm trying to decide whether Obama would just take it in his stride or if he'd have to work really hard to control the widening of his eyes and the gasp wanting to escape his throat.

It'd be the same for any incoming President.

And I'd reckon he'd have to be amazed by some national secrets - he's just a human after all.

Didn't cross my mind when Bush Jr was elected. I just assumed he was already privy to all the juicy stuff cause of Daddy dearest.

I've just got a feeling no one was gonna let Obama "in" until he was definitely in.

Inneresting blog from Melissa Etheridge, who was going to marry her girlfriend but now can't because Prop 8 was passed. Here's a bit:

"Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.
...
Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay!
...
When did it become okay to legislate morality? I try to envision someone reading that legislation "eliminates the right" and then clicking yes. What goes through their mind? Was it the frightening commercial where the little girl comes home and says, "Hi mom, we learned about gays in class today" and then the mother gets that awful worried look and the scary music plays? Do they not know anyone who is gay? If they do, can they look them in the face and say "I believe you do not deserve the same rights as me"? Do they think that their children will never encounter a gay person? Do they think they will never have to explain the 20% of us who are gay and living and working side by side with all the citizens of California?"

fuck I can't keep up, check this out!

Transgender Man Elected Mayor of Silverton Oregon.

How fucking cool is that!!!

loved this quote from the story:
"Some guys' mid-life crisis is motorcycles or sports cars or climbing mountains or trophy wives or whatever." Stu Rasmussen said his mid-life crisis was quite different. "I always wanted cleavage, so I went out and acquired some."

NZ has had a transexual MP and Mayor for some time, and in a fairly rural area.
(Not quite the same as transgender, I know, but still...)
