TED TALKS
TED TALKS
if you haven't been to http://www.ted.com yet, get on it, "Inspired talks by the world's greatest thinkers and doers"
each speech is around 20 minutes and there is a broad range of topics.
Heres one to get you started, Jill Bolte Taylor, a brain expert, experienced a stroke first hand and got to "study" what it did to her in real time. Very interesting
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jill ... sight.html
Also for all the photo buffs here, James Nachtwey, a photo journalist speaks of the power of photographs, be warned though, graphic images

I quite like the TED talks! Here is my favourite one "Do Schools kill creativity?"
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/ken_ ... ivity.html
I must watch the Dave Eggers one since someone was telling me about his book on Sudan lost boys recently.

Re: TED TALKS
TED is great - it was partly through spending many an hour on there a while back that I got motivated to go back to uni again!
This is probably my favourite of the most current talks - it boggles the mind. It really puts some of the LHC talk in perspective too.

This is my favourite too. I like how he explains that we unteach creativity by enforcing rules. She's not hyperactive, she's a dancer. Mind opening.Polecat wrote:I quite like the TED talks! Here is my favourite one "Do Schools kill creativity?"

We just did PD last week and watched/discussed this as a starter. So true and something we're basing a lot of our 'Teaching & Learning' practices on in the future. This and the 'Process of Inquiry' IS the future of education IMO.lynt wrote:This is my favourite too. I like how he explains that we unteach creativity by enforcing rules. Very interesting - especially the part at the end where he tells how peoples brains register more enjoyment consuming something that was labelled at a higher value.deviant wrote:found this one interesting today..
I just spoke to a friend who is working as a personal chef for an extremely wealthy woman over in the UK. Apparently at one dinner party they ate 2 cans of beluga caviar valued at 800 pounds a can. The beluga sturgeon is an endangered species according to Wikipedia...

2009 TED is currently being held in Long Beach California and is broadcast live on the site!
here is what happened when Bill Gates spoke recently
Bill Gates releases swarm of mosquitoes on TED audience
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2009/ ... 57082.html
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has released a swarm of mosquitoes into an audience at a technology and design conference in California.
High profile members of online networking service Twitter reported the incident on Wednesday (US time), which reportedly occurred during Gates's talk on malaria eradication, a cause the entrepreneur is pushing through his philanthropic foundation.
"Bill Gates just released mosquitos into the audience at TED and said 'Not only poor people should experience this'," Facebook manager Dave Morin wrote on Twitter.
Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar and Twitter chief executive Ev Williams confirmed that Gates released the insects on their Twitter accounts.
The official TED Conference Twitter profile confirmed that the mosquitoes were real.
"No they were not malarial. An amazing TED moment." TED tweeted.
TED (technology, entertainment and design) is an annual conference that attracts some of the world's leading thinkers. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Nobel laureates James D. Watson and Murray Gell-Mann.
This year's conference is being held in Long Beach, California.
Twitter is a micro-blogging service where people post short, text-only comments or updates on what they are doing.

Yay for TED!!
http://conferences.ted.com/TED2009/
It's TED's 25th anniversary. But instead of looking back, we're looking forward. Everyone on the program will be premiering something: a thrilling discovery, a revolutionary idea, a powerful invention, a spectacular piece of art, a first-time performance. We'll share undiscovered talent and shed new light on names you know. And then, of course, there's another great unveiling: our new home in Long Beach, California, and our new simulcast home in Palm Springs, California.
TED
Actually.. I have to organise a team building day some time. I think some of the TED material might be really useful!

Even as mega-banks topple, Juan Enriquez says the big reboot is yet to come. But don't look for it on your ballot -- or in the stock exchange. It'll come from science labs, and it promises keener bodies and minds. Our kids are going to be ... different.

I've said it before, there is every chance we will be encouraging our kids to mate with other "all naturals" rather than the "altered babies" that will be around soon enough.almax wrote:awesome one

Racism will be over when it comes to the fear of difference between natural babies and science babies.

how would you know for sure though, at least fake tits leaves a scar. I think it will be more
them not wanting to breed with us, outdated genes n all.
Interesting train of thought there though, contemplating what the will future bring.
Will Homo Sapiens be wiped out by Homo Evolutis just like we wiped out the Neanderthal?

Might be an opportunity for you boski, if the youth club/disability project a few mates and i are looking into establishing in Kolkata gets some legs.
edit: i haven't watched the vid - so what we're thinking might not be 100% in line with this, but certainly inspiring and up your alley.
