Giant XTC 2 will be a bit over a grand i think. pretty bling gear.

if you're vaguely fit i'd seriously recommend getting a nice single speed mountain bike frame with rigid forks (like the one i've got). super light frame. in fact the whole bike weighs nothing. suspension forks are overkill for city riding and just make the whole thing weigh more (ditto with gears).
But if you just want to cruise or take it offroad, getting something like the XTC2.

if you want a mad pimped out single speed, check out shifter bikes. He's a melbourne guy. awesomely hot bikes. no idea about price. should be reasonable given that the gears are the expensive bit.

alternatively if you get a bike with smaller wheels you can get spinner rims!

kronz: it is, but i can't imagine you'd ever get pulled over unless you were all over the shop or riding without lights and a helmet. i love it, especially at night, meandering through the backstreets, taking the long way home. one of the most liberating experiences you can do with your clothes on.

Got a Giant Alias about a month ago. Rides like a gem.

Lygon Cycles has them for about $900.
They're a step up from the Yukon I think.

technically you can lose your car drivers license for drink-riding

However, chances are that you won't be pulled up as long as you wear a helmet, lights, and don't run the reds
-and ride in a reasonablly straight line-

Hey does anyone know a good second hand bike place on the northside somewhere

A friend is looking for a bike for about $200. Nothing to flash easy to ride, something she doesnt have to lean over to ride, with a few gears.

Any ideas??

(I'd always push you towards Norco or Specialized bikes though.)

i've got a GT avalanche 0.5 that i've turned into a single speed up for sale. the frame is a Small which is why i'm selling it. it's really zippy and you could ride it like a large BMX if it took your fancy (won't take the same kind of beating though).

quick sale for $350

i also have one of these helmets for sale (specialized decibel). It also has a removable visor is that makes any difference.

one of the best helmets you can buy. the price tag on the box says $225. for you, $150. It's a medium which is too small for my fat head.

not off the shelf (other than maybe a trials bike or downhill or dual suspension. none of which would really be suitable for riding around town).
the easiest way would be to ask at a few bike shops and see what they say

simple harmonic motion - are in the QV building. they def have the expertise to help you out, plus they sell norco, which run hayes discs I think.

most bike shops should be able to help you with discs these days though.

Have a look at the Bicycle Victoria website for a bike servicer that's close to you. I haven't had any bike services done in the southern parts of Melbourne before, so I can't recommend anywhere that'll be remotely close.

Brunswick St Cycles are pretty good. Stay away from Fitzroy Cycles as they are over priced rip off merchants.

Remember if you are getting a new rear wheel then you are getting a new rear cluster too. This means you will prob have to get a new chain and maybe new chain rings as they tend to wear as a set, and if you introduce a new part without changing the others you can get chain skip (so the chain slips or falls off a lot) and possibly chain suck (which can be slightly annoying or absoloutley infuriating depening on how bad it is - note its usually way worse with hard tails)

yeh
figured a new rear wheel would equal just using the frame and front wheel
d'luxx has been workin at brunswick st cycles for the last few years so it's where i always went, gotta love discounts, just thought i'd check they were still the pick now that he's back in adelaide

You won't have to replace every part. Cranks, shifters, cables etc are still fine, its just the chain rings + chain + rear cluster that need to be changed in a group.

If the bikes was relatively new/unused then you may be okay, just depends how worn the chain + rings were (more worn ie more likely to have issues - this is because they "wear in" as a set).

Single speed bikes have a bit of a cult following, so they can be quite expensive in real terms. Also there are more offered by boutique brands like Rock Lobster, Litespeed, Brew etc.

Go see Shane Ford at that new bike shop on Elizabeth Street. He'll sort you out!

So I own a BMX, a custom torker actually. But for doing a bit more exercise I am thinking of buying a mountian bike. Probably something with at least suspension on the front because i would not mind riding along the Yarra etc on basic trails.

Instead of reading the whole thread you can just all put up your advice again. Thanks.

Here is my current bike.
