Got Telstra connected - was just about to sign up to TPG for Naked ADSL2+ when I noticed this:
Once Naked ADSL2+ is installed, your phone line will be disconnected. You will not be able to use any services that require a dial tone to operate. This includes fax, back to base alarm, PABX. Click here to see the full list of Complex Products.
Does this mean Telstra is going to sting me for an early termination being that I've not stayed connected for 3-months? I'm guessing so.

Anyone know?

you didnt need to get telstra hooked up, you already would have already had a phone line into the premises. should have just called internode and got them to connect you to naked just by giving them your address.

^ mate I asked this question a few times a while back.... deviant was the only one to reply.

deviant said Netspace could have hooked me up - but I liked TPG's plan better.

I tried a bunch of ISP's websites and even emailed and called a few, they all said I needed an active phoneline.

As it turns out, Telstra had to reconnect a line to the house that was severed for some reason, had the guy come out yesterday to do this - so it's probably just as well.

if you singed up with any ISP it is their job to make sure your line is in working order. a tech would have to come out anyway to hook up the naked and would sort all this out. an active phone line just means a line into your house, which 99% of places have already.

that's just worded so non techy people dont get confused trying to figure out what the hell a "phone line" might be. it is also rubbish. just call them, give them your address and they can tell you over the phone if naked can be hooked up.

Got ya. Yeah I tried that with one of the mobs mate - they said no phone number, no go. Not saying this applies to all ISP's - but it definitely does with a lot of them. I'm guessing I should cancel Telstra whilst I still can - wish I had of known all this stuff last week.

can guarantee internode and iinet do not require you to have an active phone line. ive been thru the setup numerous times with both.

Direct this is what i got told by TPG to do in relation to the phone line:

There should be a wall socket, a vacant line and copper wire installed between your premises and Telstra's Exchange.
You should have a soft dial tone, by connecting a phone and dialing 127 22 123 you will be able to find out the number previously connected.


i.e. all you need to do is connect a home phone to the wall socket and type in that number and it will give you the previous phone line connected to that wall socket. i did it, and it worked a treat, sent them through the details and i am almost all hooked up, no dramas.

This is the packages i am checking out, getting the $10 a month with $30 phone line connection, so only $40 for internet and phone which is fine for my needs.

Thanks Liz - yeah looking at the same. Just called Telstra, apparently no such thing as a 10-day cooling off period for home phone (unless you've switched over from another provider). Damnit... stuck in this situation for 3-months at least.
Can't connect Naked ADSL2+ with TPG as it will disconnect Telstra and I'll get hit with early disconnection fee ($100). If I get TPG ADSL2+ (not naked), it's a 12-month contract... I only want 3-months so that I can switch to Naked after my 3-months with Telstra is up.

Fucking gay.

Maybe I'll just bite the bullet - disconnect Telstra, get hit with the $100 disconnection fee (on top of the $60 connection fee) and then the new setup fee with TPG. Ridiculous really.

So, my connection came through yesterday. Shithouse.

I'm with TPG. Unlimited ADSL2+. Got D-Link DSL-2740B modem/router and I've got these connection speeds:
Downstream Line Rate (Kbps): 208
Upstream Line Rate (Kbps): 887
(^according to D-Link status diagnostics)

I was downloading some stuff at less than 20kbps this morning.

I've tried three different ports in the house for the modem, and I'm running it wireless on my 1 year old MacBook with 10.4.6. Same results with my new iMac.

Fucking weak. I could get faster speeds if I ran down to the exchange and brought the data back myself.

try using as short as possible a cable between your phone line and the dsl modem; also if you have any extension cords or anything, take them off. have you got a filter too?

Hi Foo.

It's about a 1m cable mate - the one that came with the modem/router. I have unplugged an extension cord that was on a different wall socket thingy.
Here's how I'm rolling now (update):
Downstream Line Rate (Kbps): 193
Upstream Line Rate (Kbps): 915

I don't have anything other than the modem/router. So I guess no filters. I think all I have is firewall on the D-Link.

I also conducted the 'Oz Broadband Speedtest' (http://www.ozspeedtest.com/) and got these results:

i have no fucking idea how your upstream is so dramatically faster: it should be the exact opposite! usually downstream is 8x or more faster than upstream, which is what you want, since you download rather than upload pretty much everything.

http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au will tell you how far you are from your exchange: 2-3km isn't close at all, mind. dsl starts to fall off really dramatically after about 1.4km, so it's not surprising that your speeds are quite low, but the downstream/upstream ratio seems baaaaadly wrong.

is the d-link an all-in-one wifi & modem thing? if so, then you can usually log in to the web interface (http://192.168.1.1) to get diagnostics out of it, including what line speeds it's negotiated, etc. i can't walk you through it as i haven't had a d-link so don't know what the web interface looks like off the top of my head, but if it has a 'status' link click on that, and you should get something like this:

then click on 'show statistics' next to 'pppoe wan uplink'.

Righto. Going by the exchange link you sent - I'm fucked. Estimated cable length of 3132m.

BUT - estimated speed of 6000. I'm getting more than 20 times less than this.

Yes, the D-Link is an all-in-one modem/router. I've gone to the address you're talking about, which is where I got my initial speed reports from. But my page doesn't look quite like yours, and I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for.

It has a 'status' link, yes. But I cannot see any mention of 'pppoe wan uplink'.

Just bought a filter, going to try it now.

Looks to be good now. Almost 5Mb/s upload. 1Mb/s download. I think the problem was the the home phone on another connection.

I've put a filter on that phone and all seems well.

can you go to http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu and hit the red 'start analysis' button when it appears? once it's run through all the tests, there should be a small link marked 'permalink' at the bottom of the header. if you could copy the address that link points to and paste it here, we could get a better idea of what's going on.

that all looks good! if you really care you could change your mtu from 1500 to 1492 in the dsl modem, but that shouldn't make toooo much of a difference.

Sooooo, moved house 3 months ago, issues with internet ever since. timed out, couldnt even download the latest itunes update. Got onto Telstra on the weekend, and established our modem was still set at the same speed for Brunny and stuffed it all up.

about 45 min on the phone, and it was done!! Rather impressed with the service, surprisingly I have to say!!

THEN, got onto the 7eps of SOA, started them at about 3pm, got home last night and they were all done!!

OMG, were back in download land, and im totally stoked!

Rather than make a new topic I thought I would revive this one.

The place I am moving isn't able to have a fixed line broadband connection for some odd reason. We can only get wireless...

Any recomendations or experience with wireless you guys have?

I am a frequent user who downloads tunes, plays games etc. So I am looking for a fast connection of course without drop outs.

I know it is asking for a lot when it comes to wireless but I suppose a stable connection is most important.

you're up the shit man tbh. 3g not a very good option for a home connection. wireless tech like wimax is coming but not here yet (even then you need a massive aerial that costs like 1k to install), so you're stuck with 3g which is really only good for mobile browsing (optimised mobile websites = less bandwidth usage).

are you in an apartment or something?

I did see something about unwired and 4G network but I assumed it's all sh1t talk.

It's not an appartment. Just a house in the inner burbs really.

I am probably thinking because of the phone line it could be the service would be stupidly slow. I.E pair gain that it would be the reason they can't do it. But in all fairness I don't have a clue why and I am pretty sure if I called Telstra or Optus I would get a half arsed answer.
