Yeah. My brain was sort of going 'oh this is just twee/too obvious/cardboard cutout etc', and my eyes were saying 'shut up brain, this is really neat'

after finishing I thought yeah, a real spectacle worth watching, but it didn't take long for the visual rush to wear off. it was actually pretty crap, but I guess i can handle a movie or two a year or so on that basis. it certainly didn't resonate or stay with me at all like a good movie does, but i guess the plot was good enough for the purpose.

that said, too many illogical elements and holes: http://autotelic.com/avatar_-_the_metac ... al_edition

I also thought the use of 3d was well done in the pandora scenes but too demonstratrive early on, like the first shot with the golfball. its like the traditinoal cinematic devices, such as change in focus, have to be done really carefully and subtly with 3D or it is too direct and distracting. the computer generated stuff seemed to have better control over depth of field. I also really liked the cockpit curvatures and smaller sense of 3D.

This may have already been posted in this thread but I was just watching the Morning Show and they said Avatar has made over 2.1 billion worldwide. Probably in Australian, but that's some cash right there...

I respect the benjamins. I dont respect arbitrary tastemakers or wannabe film buffs. The fact that its made that much moolah tells you everything about how good a film it is.

Cash rules everything around me ahh, only cos I want to feed my family man, guess that makes me a family man, thats my fam!

it took this so called 'james cameron' cunt 10 years to come up with one pokemon character?
I like this movie.

The plot reminds me colonisation of America. And I like the sense of this film. -_- Also it shows the mercantile side of people.

I don't like computerised films, but this film is so natural, and because of that I was impressed.

But the film's plot is very predictable and banal. In my opinion, it's the main lack.

but what about the 12 bazillion dollars?

surely you would change your opinion on what kind of film it is on the basis of it making so much money?

enough to buy a small African country outright.

a good film is a rich one no?

money and straight up film thuggin are very important.

Haven't seen it and I'm not going to, but I agree with FS in saying the amount of money a movie makes is no representation that it's all of a sudden a 'classic' or a must-see. You have to take into consideration that they spent $350mUSD advertising it before it even came out, more than any other movie ever.

I'm glad I didn't see it, I would have felt conned.

Visuals stunning.
Plot obviously not so stunning.
Even so, some of the issues (and the amount of them) which it covers (albeit briefly) are admirable. Even if it does just skim over them, at least it gets people thinking about them.

The actual concept of an 'avatar' itself is a complex one that could be debated for hours (in fact in my 4hr Narrative for Multimedia class the other day we pretty much talked about it all class). Avatars in games/settings like Second Life, World of Warcraft and other MMOs, PlayStation Home and plenty of other settings provide that level of customization and personality to the pixels on the screen that are taken for granted now. Really a method of escapism (like all entertainment in a way), but on on another level; a true 'second life' for some people. Interesting doco on SBS a while back on Second Life and some of its users...
The way Avatar immerses you so much conveys this in a concentrated dose to the plebs who don't get this kind of thing. I know - I played WoW for quite a while and can see how you can get sucked in to virtual worlds. I can see the positives and the negatives. Some people just don't understand these concepts, especially older generations. I remember having discussions with my auntie/uncle about MMO's like WoW and they were incredulous. They really didn't get that they can be a rich way of interacting and socializing with other people, while of course also having fun and escaping from the mundane nature of reality for some people. How could they without immersing themselves in these worlds?

Anyway my point is I'm sure there are many theses on issues surrounding avatars and has anyone got any other examples of a movie that explores the issue even a tiny bit? Certainly not one that brings it to the masses to this extent I'm sure.

Of course the film also has positive messages the environment, the role of science, cultural/racial tolerance and understanding among others... Of course its not going to do all of them justice or even come close. Its not the Inconvenient Truth and its not The Class..

Its a lot easier to backhandedly dis it for being lame and simple than it is to realise that even though its a monster budget blockbuster, at least it touches on many of these issues and gets people thinking about them a little bit. At least I hope it does...

Wasn't the term "avatar" coined by Neal Stephenson in his *awesome* book "Snow Crash"??

On a side note... I still can't believe they've never made a movie out of that

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Pneumatic fake-tanned lacquered strumpet of a film. Nice to look at... poss. one night stand material but behind the tits, ass and hair extentions there wasn't much at all. Film should have ended where the tree caught fire. No such thing as a happy ending in the actual battles between resource exploitation and ecosystem preservation that are happening atm.
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

shame we dont dont have an emoticon for :sanskript:

Dan I'm sure a lot of the better cyber-punk fiction will be adapted for film as it it's prescience becomes more widely acknowledged and the funds and technology become available to re-create them faithfully.

I heard Chris Cunningham was directing an adaptation of Gibson's Neuromancer which would have been so rad. Chris Cunningham is just amazing. Sadly the project has since stalled.

Films like Avatar are actually a real triumph for Science Fiction as a genre. Probably not since ET has a science fiction film been so widely successful for all ages.

Speaking of which, just watched a program on foxtel last night which was an 1.5 hour interview with William Gibson.

I have re-read Neuromancer 6 times since I picked it up for the first time in 1992. It's practically my bible.

I couldn't understand much of it the first time, I just liked the way he wrote - loads of jargon, drug references and hallucinogenic imagery.

Yeah I've read it a few times, and I really love a lot of early cyberpunk but I sort of hope that they don't make a film from it, if it results in anything half as bad as the horror that was Johnny Mnemonic...

yeah Johnny Mnemonic was dire. In the main I don't really care if they make them into films or not. I'd rather read a book than watch a film most of the time.

Chris Cunningham though, if anyone could do it justice - he could.
