The MB dubious ethics and P.C. police thread.

Post by ghetto kitty »

Now we are all growing up and getting married etc....
this thread is a sounding board for navigating the ethics and morals of modern life. I mean, there is an inherent understanding of right and wrong, but also its a slippery slope innit! so many grey areas!

Basically, moral police, you are welcome here.

first topic : someone sends you an email, say its music or art related, and they haven't done a BCC so you can see all 500 contacts. where does everyone stand on the ethics of using these email addresses for a mailout about similar topics? Wrongtown? Okay town? Get me the fuck off your spam radar? Write to them and say, if you do not wish to receive these email reply with unsubscribe?

feel free to post your quandries here and I'm sure others will support/tear to threads where they see fit.

:)

jeebus.

okay, taking it down a notch now...

second topic : in a share house where it is equally boys n girls, should the men put toliet seat down after peeing? and should they be asked to clean toilet as they are the ones with the bad aim?

Hmmmm.

Given that I live in a house with a 50/50 male-female ratio I believe (whilst it is unmanly) that the toilet seat should go down.

It does make for very funny fall in the toilet stories if seat is left up in midnight pee pee missions in the dark.

However - the lid should also go down, 6ft spray area upon flush - hence why no toothbrush lives near toilet.

Men should not clean toilets - that's just racist.

I put the lid down also. I think it evens it out so the women have to do something. Otherwise it ain't fair. We have to put it up to pee and then put it down and the women just walk in, sit down, do their business and leave.

While we're on toilets in sharehouses, what are peoples opinions on if u share a bathroom with a girl and you're expected to take it in turns to buy bog roll and she uses 90% of it every time? Ridiculous IMO. Girls use a hell of a lot more of the stuff so they should buy it more often i say.

I bet you $50 that the woman does more around the house than you!

with buying paper, i do agree, men hardly use it, some women chew through rolls like they are stuffing their bra with it or something.

Make them buy it 100% of the time.

when we use it (once maybe twice (on a post curry day)) we use no where near the amount.

pending scrunch or fold technique that is.

we're down on Bulk purchase - 24 rolls at a time minimum.

yeah, fuck running out. i buy big too.

i do all the household shopping each week and the boys give me cash for it, so yes, they pay for toliet paper, but they will never run out, nor do they have to go to the stupid market for anything household related, i think thats a pretty sweet deal.

The MythBusters did a test on placing a toothbrush around different parts of a house and then had someone go to the toilet. they found poo particles on the toothbrush no matter where the toothbrush was placed in the house.

i know! apparently its unavoidable, but the amount is so minimal you cannot get sick or anything from it.

i reckon if you keep your toilet clean, the less likely more poo particles can escape. i hate going to someone's house that has a dirty toilet, its fricken the worst thing to see

okay more housemate related ones

- wiping benches in the kitchen - do you do it after every kitchen action? even toast? or not at all - ever? hahah
how bout cleaning, wiping the stovetop (this shits me in my house with the bacon eaters)

- if you guys say its the womans' job to clean the toliet, can i demand that the men take out the trash? (even if they NEVER remember and i always do it)

more email related ones

- is it rude to not capitalize peoples names in emails?

- if replying from an iphone, is one line of text as response okay? how bout if my sig says "im replying from an iphone so im totally justified in giving you a one line response" ??

try freshly plastering and pva'ing your toilet walls, interesting to see just how much splashage you get from the average waz (even well-aimed) + flush

or i guess it would be, if you did it

surely the correct and or polite length of response would depend on the content of the question preceding it

does having an iphone exempt one from being couth?

Nein. And a sig to that effect would just annoy me more tbh. (I think that's what the 'sent from my iPhone' one secretly means anyway.)

If it's a matter of conveying information urgently, then that's one thing. However, if it should be a proper reply and you don't have time/cbf typing it all from your phone, then I claim you don't have time to be replying at all and you should wait 'til you're at a 'puter :stilldoesnthaveaniphone:

I think it should (does for me) make you think about efficiency in replies. I have to work on that for general emails and iphone kind of forces you to do it. Often emails are too long

The capital letters thing if we're talking about important emails I think using capitals is a must, it shows professionalism.
If you're just writing an email to a friend saying something along the lines of "so I'm going out to dinner with darrens after work and david and sharon will be there wanna come?" kinda email then I don't think it really matters.

Iphone resposne thingy I think depends on the email if it's an email where it requires a lengthy response than either a lengthy response should be given or at courtesy email stating that you have seen it and will defintealy reply once you get a few quick minutes to actually sit down and do it.

nothing shits me more than a long-winded email full of irrelevant information. its the one thing thats most likely to make me tarry responding.

the good thing about people using email to convey one line or one word responses - is it invites you to do the same.

dont sign off with your name, dont say cheers or best or any of that bullshit if you know who you're dealing with it seems so pointless.

what YI said.
i normally just copy the format of their email though.
say it goes like this

Dear Paul,

First sentence

Second sentence

Regards
Some Chump

i will respond in much the same way

Dear Chump,

you.

suck.

Regards
Paul.

but yeh i do believe that i know who i am (therefore dont need to be told who i am)
and i know who they are (from the email address, though sometimes if u dont know their name. i don't actually care... i guess they are under the impression that them knowing my name means something)

there's a difference between ethics and etiquette.. etiquette is manners - social codes. ethics is a system of doing good. you can have good etiquette, without being ethical, or vice versa.. i.e. belching at a fancy restaurant, or not putting the toilet seat up, isn't unethical, it might be just bad manners.
