Found this inneresting talk on cholesterol. This doctor is basically saying that there really is no good or bad cholesterol. What the medical professionals term as bad cholesterol is actually a protein (LDL) that helps to move nutrients around the circulatory system to the tissues.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awA2fsa94MI

Fascinating stuff. I'll just keep up with the anti-oxidant foods and I'll be right mate

Also read that statin drugs, used to reduce high cholesterol, are responsible for increasing Alzheimer's in patients.

I pulled my appendix ones out... but they were the dissolving kind anyway so I don't think it counts.

I would certainly not try using a stitch unpick / seam ripper commonly used for sewing... this could lead to most unfortunate consequences indeed... Image

Yeah my dentist died in a light plane crash (suspected suicide) around the time I was due for an appointment so I've been putting off finding another one ever since... Always had pretty much perfect dental health though so it can wait a while I'm thinking

Re: Health

yep, that's where I get it

it's still $65 for 500G

It has Spirulina in it, along with 100s of other things.... all 100% plant derived, not synthetic like most vitamin pills.

it I have a multi vitamin, I usually piss bright yellow later that day.... keeping in mind a vitamin pill is only ~800-1000mg.

The standard dose for this is 12G (over 12x the amount) and you don't just piss it away, the body actually absorbs it properly (I gather that's due to bio-availability of organic material)... it's great stuff.

if I have it every day, it lasts about 6-7 weeks.... If I have it sporadically (like I do at the moment).. it will last a few months.

500G = 41 * 12G dose... but if you don't heap the spoon as much you can make it last a little longer.

500g bottle
12g dose
=41.6 day
so probably 40 odd days when you account for spillage and over measures.
Its pretty GAAH when you first drink it but you quickly get used to it.
Pretty sure a high proportion of it is made from legumes.

Available in the following sizes: 120 gram, 300 gram and 400 gram jars, bulk 1 kg jar, & convenient 'single serve' sachets (box 12).

Phyto-Protein is extracted from Golden Peas and has the most balanced amino acid profile of any plant based protein and the highest bio-availability.

100% Vegetable Origin, 88% Bio-Available Protein

Available in the following sizes: 500 gram & bulk 1 kg jar."

but dont get the 1kg jar unless 2 people are using it, think it is only suppossed to last 1 month or so starts going off, should keep it in fridge too so the 1kg takes up alot of space.

Vital greens is awesome, but I could never remember to take it. The taste is weird too, its almost like I love it and hate it at the same time.

I just use the ole multi-vitamins and keep em in my desk, heaps easier and always remember em.

that yellow colour is most likely to be vitamin c, which the human body cannot store.

can have straight up.

dilute with a bit of water and go nuts.

so, you don't 100% need smoothy - if you do, try this one.

Kiwi Fruit x 2
Banana x 1
1 dessert spoon vital greens
1 dessert spoon protein powder (not 100% necessary)
1 Dessert spoon of LSA mix(Linseed, sunflower and almonds)
handful of berries (frozen is cheapest as fresh is a farken rip off)
bit of ice
Coconut milk/soy milk/normal milk (also not 100% necessary - I use a splash of water)

i am feeling really healthy after 3 weeks of no green, chain smoking marlborough lights, eating indonesian food every day (spicy, simple, chicken and fish w rice and some greens) and drinking a lot of beer (which i never usually drink)

there is too much oil in everything here, and too much milk/cheese.

been making smoothies every morning at the shop with vital greens.

just put in soy milk, a banana, some natural yoghurt and a bit of muesli and a touch of caramel milk shake flavour hah! tastes pretty awesom tbh. our barista wants to start putting protein powder in it but it will probably just make me fat tbh.

shit has bloody everthing in it! even has a natural anti depressant which is why it makes you feel good huhu.

bloody expensive but i guess it's good for ya

What are people's thoughts on flu shots?

Had one for the first time last year, and had another one the other day

I'm relatively fit and healthy. My theory is that maybe they are a waste of time. If my body is in good condition, then shouldn't it be able to shake a flu in 3-4 days without the help of the vaccine? I put this question to my doc and she basically said that eventhough my body could fight a flu by itself, she thought that it could fight it more effectively if I'd been vaccinated. Fairly vague response imo

I'm now crook as a dog and although I can't be sure it's a result of the shot I've just had, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have more than a sneaking suspicion

So what I'm wondering is, would I be better off just chancing it and giving the shot a miss, or are there actually some proven benefits? Did a bit of digging around for info but only turned up the standard internet armchair expert rubbish. Would be interested to get some opinions from people here

I don't really know the facts, but I personally never get them... even though they are free from my work. Something about it "irks" me, don't really now why.

I never really get that sick :? meh

The point of the flu shot is to boost your immune system and the cells that fight a illness when you are exposed to it. The influenza vaccine is a inactivated/killed vaccine which is where they kill the virus particles making it unable to replicate when it is given to a person. Your body then has the 'memory' cells so that if you are exposed to the illness you can produce immune cells to fight the illness quicker than if you didn't have the vaccine. So you may only get the flu for a day (or not notice it at all) rather than a week for example.

The reason you feel shit could be a couple of reasons, one is that you have some of the side affects from the vaccine itself which usually last 1-2 days and are things like aches and pains or fever. The other possible reason is that the vaccine takes 2 weeks for it to be properly effective and you may have been unlucky enough to catch influenza in the mean time.

Is it worth getting is up to you but it depends on if it would be a big deal if you miss a week of work laid up in bed or are around children (babies esp) or elderly people that you wouldn't want getting sick.

Hmm ok

Another thing I was wondering was, does my immunity get stronger every year I have the vaccine, or does it kind of start again from scratch at the beginning of each flu season?

I'm starting to think I might just be better off giving the vaccination a miss and chancing it in future. The longest period I'm ever sick for is about 3 days, after which my body recovers. I'm young and fit so it's highly unlikely I'm going to die or become gravely ill as a result of contracting the flu

Still a bit confused though

Influenza is a bit unique in that it changes slightly every winter as it goes from hemisphere to hemisphere. So thats why you have to get a yearly vaccine as opposed to a 10year tetanus vaccine for example. There's also a bit of guess work involved from what I've been taught in that they have an idea of what the strand will be using the Northern Hemisphere influenza to go off.

fwiw I never get sick and am around sick people all day and have never bothered getting the vaccine. But now I have a baby I get vaccinated because I don't want to risk giving something to him even if I'm not sick.
