The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Saw "The Road" last night.
What a grim 1 and a half hours.
Beatiful landscapes and soundtrack but I was expecting a lot more and it ended up being rather dull really.
wanted to like it more than I did.

I thought WTWTA was dull as dishwater. I was bored the whole way through. Bit too prosaic for my liking.Lil MiSbreaks wrote:Isnt it just. I love that movie!! Kakkaaauuuu grrrrrrrr!!youthful_implants wrote:Tina and I saw UP last night, now that is a great movie!! Amazing.
Saw a couple of movies sat night:
Zombieland, surprisingly, I did laugh and I liked it.
Where the Wild Things are. Did enjoy, but was a lil slow and I dont think i got the point. Finished thinking Carol was him and KW his mum, but that was about all.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
UP is fricken the bombdiggity!!! and so is Pixar. even the people that work there bloody go about how awesome it is. that has to be good
saw Zombieland on the weekend too LMB! It was fricken hilarious and awesome. I reckon best zombie movie EVER!!!!
also watched Jennifer's Body (with Oli-san aka mecka). Fricken random movie and then some. And way to put you off Megan Fox for good, if you were inclined that way (looks at Oli). I quited like it, was a bit scary. Best description would be black comedy teen style movie sort of.
also watched 7 Pounds. Man i cried with this one. Will Smith was great. The story kept me involved and wanting to know what the hell is going on, cos for most of it you really are unsure. You may pick it up a bit, but then kind of not. Won't give anything away.

after seeing transformers 2 i would regard Megan Fox as the most uncharismatic mannequin walking the earth today. Not sexy tbh.

interesting, I heard they had a lot of difficulties on the set of What's Eating Gilbert Grape

ahhhhh yes, Gilbert Grape.
Tough conditions for all involved, threats of 'Hot & Dry' Sets and 'Squeezing the life out of the actors' in many scenes attributed to a very whiney cast.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Saw Precious on Sunday and thought it was fairly meh.
The way in which they heaped on every conceivable tragedy got a bit too much and I just felt that I was being emotionally manipulated in the end. It was a good story I suppose, but I sure am glad I didn't pay to see it. Not sure I'd recommend it. Maybe on DVD.
The performances we pretty amazing though. Mo'Nique as the mother was very well done, and Precious was well acted by whatever the girl's name it. As for Mariah Carey getting so much attention...I don't understand the fuss! She wasn't in it much at all.

I am quite a way into the book (reading after watching the filum) and, in my memory the film is getting better (if that makes sense). The book is so descriptive and talks about a lot of things that are skipped over in the movie. I think if I watch the movie again after the book I will really get a lot more out of it.ghetto kitty wrote:I LOVED the book.Hatsudai wrote:Saw "The Road" last night.

The whole concept of it (The Road that is) is rather fascinating actually and I can't stop thinking about it!
Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
Haven't read the book and found the movie quite depressing, but overall i enjoyed it (if that make sense?). The idea and concept of the movie as a whole was great - loved how the flash backs worked and slowly you find out more about their past, etc. But I kept hoping that more would happen and found the ending really predictable and disappointing.Hatsudai wrote:I am quite a way into the book (reading after watching the filum) and, in my memory the film is getting better (if that makes sense). The book was really amazing, such a different take on the 'after the world ends' scenario...
I might watch the movie now if your gaining a new appreciation of it Hatsudai...

Re: The Road
Book is amazing. Takes some effort but worthwhile.
Definitely one of the least likely books to make into a movie I would have thought... so subtle, descriptive, minimal action, all about the mood...
Except it was popular I guess which counts for a lot when getting a film up.
Not sure whether to see the film or just stay with my memories of the book.

Re: The Movie/Film/DVD thread...
^ I definitely have to catch Sherlock Holmes shortly!
Last night I watched Akira Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well (悪い奴ほどよく眠る, Warui Yatsu Hodo Yoku Nemuru) from 1960, which was the director's first semi-independent production away from the studio system constraints of Toho and Shochiku.
While a scathing indictment of the Japanese bureaucracy - complete with its entwined corporate greed and self-serving political maneuverings - that shaped this country's business and social structure following on from the Allied occupation (and the country's economic miracle thereafter), the plot opening here also rings true to contemporary Japan 50 years on.
After police arrive at a wedding to arrest a corporate assistant officer on charges of bribery in a kickback scheme, newspaper clippings tell a background yarn of suspicious construction fees intermingled with free dinners and billions of yen worth of probable bids rigging; the tale then segues into a familiar Japanese casebook study of secretaries and underlings taking the fall for their major corporation bosses.
The Bad Sleep Well - like Ran and Kumonosu-jō (Throne of Blood) - then draws on Shakespeare, in this case the Bard's Hamlet; there are also moments reminiscent of the recent movie Michael Clayton.
Toshiro Mifune yet again puts in a powerhouse effort as the restrained, focused Koichi Nishi, a young man who manipulates his own elevation to a prominent position within a corrupt company in order to expose the men responsible for his father's death.
Masayuki Mori (the gentle, naive title character in Kurosawa's earlier film The Idiot) here renounces any sympathetic kindling whatsoever as the despotic vice president of the company in focus.
Also on-screen is Kyoko Kagawa, previously with Mifune in Nippon Tanjo (The Birth of Japan, 1959) as well as one of the highlights of Kurosawa's 1957 film Donzoko (The Lower Depths); she also popped up in Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story (1953) and would later appear in the Kurosawa movies Red Beard and High and Low along with the classic kaiju flick Mothra.
Joining them on board a cinematic ride that's as gripping as it is meaningful are Tatsuya Mihashi (whose last role before he passed away - 44 years later, in 2004 - was the kindly, meaningful GP in Casshern) and Kurosawa veteran Takashi Shimura.
Masaru Sato returns on sound track duties; he previously did the score for Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, as well as the later double-act Yojimbo and Sanjuro - and would aurally shine in 1974 on Jun Fukuda's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
His score here is superb.

a new-ish crocodile movie....Black Water. Not bad all in all, but i love crocodile movies so not much will put me off. Based on a true story so even more scary to watch. i think it was based on those two people that got stuck up a tree for days with a crocodile hunting them down below and not letting them move. scary stuff...

same here, and then when i saw it, it was okay, but def did not live up to the hype.gnat wrote: i really should drag myself along to avatar at the movies i suppose. the more people rave on it the more it turns me off.
my philosophy with blockbusters is always, watch em after the hype is gone. then your just seeing a movie and can judge it how you like....but Avatar i succumbed cos everyone was like 'YOU HAVE TO SEE IT AT IMAX" which was a crock of shit.
tbh i would have rather seen it in a year, when i forgot what it was about, and then i think i would have been more impressed!
saw Inglorious Basterds last night - fucking AWESOME! Best Nazi film ever. I love Brad Pitt - that man can act...and head nazi guy (dunno who he is) was fucknig greta too - scary and unhinged, just how we like em. All the characters were Tarantino-esque larger than life.....loved it! The story, the shots, the comic stylings, winner!
and i always giggle at the cameos Quentin does, as the petrified soldier who betrays his country in a split second....
4 out of 5 - another win from one of my fav filmmakers..

Watched a few films on recent plane trips
The Invention of Lies - almost brilliant, just a tad soppy
Where The Wild Things Are - interesting adaption, was interesting enough to keep me awake on a long haul flight.
