Who's writing hip-hop, downbeat?
Interested if any other MB'ers are writing slower BPM'ed styled beats. Hip-hop, downbeat, ambient, etc...
I'll post up one of my hip-hop beats when I get home, but am keen to hear what else tickles your creative nerves.
Ez.

hell yeah. i'm going through a massive hiphop/jazz/funk/ambient phase. i've been mucking around with an electric guitar and bringing that into the sound.
Been trying to do jungle for years, but i actually think this new sound is way fresher and more original, so i may keep it up.
i'm currently working on my third track in this style. This was my second:
"Sun & Moon"

we've been messing around with hip hop and breaks but with the powerful, oscillating bass of DnB. Using random samples from all over the place- old hip hop, funk, classical, soul, flamenco guitar etc. even an old recording of a russian guy giving a lecture. fucked if I know what he's on about, but it sounds cool as.
Nice electronic touch on hip-hop. Love this tune.

Here it is, still in it's working title "White Dog"
Haven't touched it in a while, as the first and last hip-hop beat I kinda worked on.. needs to be developed a lot more, but gives you an idea of the vibes I'm heading towards

I am writing mostley slower stuff, i try to write dubstep but it ends up being progressive ambient type stuff. I'm going to start impletmenting some acoustics into it as soon as I can afford an interface, some real precusion and guitar and maybe some woodwind. I also want to see if some of all the old semi-improv worldy hippyish instrumental acoustic guitar shit I made up whist smoking weed in my late teens can scrub up nice with some production thrown in the mix.
i like 'white dog'. good shit.
i sampled my old drum kit and used it on this track. it's got no bass and i did it in reason over a year ago.
kampai.

Sounds cool! I've actually been trying to bring in some live percussion too. I've got a decent Meinl conga & bongo set... gotta experiment with it more.flippo wrote:I am writing mostley slower stuff, i try to write dubstep but it ends up being progressive ambient type stuff. I'm currently working on a track which is all done, apart from needing a 'lead' instrument. Maybe I should try doing some crazy percussion stuff.
My original idea was adding some xylophone, but I don't have any good xylo samples.
A question: is sample swapping accepted on this forum? Commercial samples, I mean.

so the way i work nowadays means everytin is a downbeat track, i work up a half time dancehall or hip hop riddim, record or sample a vocal, build some synths in around it, mute most of it back drop in some more breaks, start un muting stuff figure what works, what doesn't restructure swear a bit, wnoder where the phasing is coming from when everythings mono, realise a few stupid mistakes go back fix em ...
heres something from monday night its a dancehall beats but dark and heavy as fuck with tek dnb synth action and vocal courtesy of admiral tibet and shabba ranks.

That sounds damn cool, gonna listen when I get home. I've been looking for some 'hard' dancefloor but can't find any (artist suggestions anyone?). I love the rhythm and the raw electronic sound of dancehall, but I don't like the RnB influence much of it has...unsoundbwoy wrote:dancehall beats but dark and heavy as fuck with tek dnb synth action and vocal courtesy of admiral tibet and shabba ranks.
I once heard a DJ play a whole set of dark-style dancehall, so I know it exists!

Thanks a lot! I used samples of individual chords/notes. So the arrangements are original.T I C K A wrote:damn lovin those rhodes man !
Ya know what though, I actually own a Rhodes piano (not bragging). It was my late dads, who was a jazz muso. The piano has unfortunately been tucked away in storage for about 7 years (since I moved to Melb). I gotta get it out, like NOW!
It looks about the same as this one: http://www.getthatsound.com/General%20A ... Rhodes.jpg

I started hanging out with Chris when I lived in Richmond a few years back. Maybe I've met you before...aerobiotic wrote:hahaha, yeh I roll with chris... his a cool dude! Ask him who Tim is next time you see him. How do you know him?
I designed the TK4S logo! I've got the same hoodie as you (with the zip). There wasn't many of those made... like only 10 from memory.
Anyway, back to the music. Heres what I'm working on (I still think it needs a lead instrument though, and a proper ending). Working title is 'Crown'. As always, feedback is very welcome.

Thanks mate. Yeah dig the vibes on Ninja Tune.aerobiotic wrote:Hey Lynt I thought your track was swell... You should hear some of direktors stuff...
Do you like dope on plastic and ninja tune stuff? Im sure you would but anyway, I wouldnt mind making that kind of stuff
Dug your tune mate, did you play the guitar parts?
Don't know if you're referring to me re: the guitar parts as I can't recall any guitars being in White Dog... but for the record, I didn't play any real instruments, but the synthetic melodies are me.
