aslo what OS is it running?

hey mate, its shared server, unix/apache. i havent touched that subject for a bit.. but will knock on your PM when i need assistance.

trying to format a laptop with a password protected bios...that you errr lost the password for?

if its a dell go to support.dell.com and download a bios update for it...if you flash the bios from windoze it wont ask yo for a password and will overwrite the old settings. then format away.

all of them will have an override key, much like a PUK for mobile phone sims. search the net for the model/make, should be able to find something :)

or have i missed the point and your actually trying to jump start the thing? if the latter ive got no idea haha

Quick Q: I don't have a Mac or easy access to one for development purposes (when I worked pro IT I was in offices flooded by Macs, but not anymore), I need to test some sites on hell spawn IE 4.0 for Mac. Anyone know of sites or software that can let me test multiple browsers on Mac from my PC, or is this just sillyness...

BrowserCam can do it. they have a free trial account service too. :thumbup:

Thanks mate, I'll keep digging around and let you know, though I'd rather have something "on site" so I can do my tests and fixes on demand.. so to speak ;)

Did find this, though: http://www.emulators.com/softmac.htm

Hello again, anyone had any success with running Flash locally and grabbing data from the internet?

To be more precise, loading XML across the net from your desktop Flash app?

Valuetime, I'm looking nervously at you. :confused3: :confused2:

Server/Computer names. Anyone got any naming schemes?

For our servers at work, I'm currently going with record labels.

:haha: :thumbup:

normally I've used whatever came to mind at the time. when I shared house with a bunch of geeks, we had 13 characters from the Simpsons in our cluster.

at the moment at work it's been all about semi-obscure musos:
  • miles
  • lonnie
  • gilberto
  • bird
  • jimi

sorry, must have missed this one. just use the connectors. from Flash MX, there's a native XML parser you can access via the XML class. (XML.load() and XML.parseXML() functions work well.).

freedesktop.org servers are Penny Arcade characters:
* tycho (used to be LDAP server, now just disused)
* gabe (main project server, soon to be email only)
* fruit (main LDAP server)
* kemper (soon to be cvs/svn/git master)
* annarchy (soon dev shell machine, main web host, anoncvs, viewcvs, gitweb)

For my machines, DJ Shadow. The ThinkPad X40s are endtroducing (new), and ephemera (old; Excessive Ephemera is the title of CD2 on Endtroducing.....). The T43 is preemptive (Strike), my main desktop is brainfreeze, and I also have (One Night In) bangkok and (The Private) repress kicking around. I've used product (Placement) and intune (and On Time) before.

Former naming schemes include characters from MegaTokyo (I was younger and more stupid, and it was vastly funnier at the time). My last job had penguins (chinstrap, emperor, humboldt), and Antarctic research stations (mawson, mcmurdo, a bunch of Russian ones). Ironically, this meant that Ubuntu's main gateway at the data centre was called gentoo. :) Job before that, we used a mix of gods and whatever sprung to mind (velox, vesuvius, zaphod).

i was at a job for about two years that was roughly half python, half debian. wasn't too difficult to find, but I wasn't looking at the time, it was pure chance.

Thanks man, I actually realised I didn't need to be as technical as I thought.. but I've struck a problem with PHP and knowing that PHP is quite clever with it's in built functions, I didn't want to write a huge function myself without asking if it's already around

ie:

I need to work out the most recent Monday, either if it's the current day or has just passed.

I've started something like this

Code: Select all

		// We start by getting the current DAY of the week in numerical form
		// 1 being Monday, 2 being Tuesday, 3 being Wednesday etc...
		// Once we find out our date, we need to minus the day of the week off the
		// actual DATE which we are currently on to find out what date Monday was
		// For example. If today is the 29th, and we're on the 3rd day of the week
		// We take 29 minus 3 and get 26. We add 1 to bring it back to Monday.
		// Monday was the 27th in this instance.
		$mondaysDate = (date("j")-date("w"))+1;
		$mondaysDate = date("Y")."-".date("m")."-".$mondaysDate;
It's a little sloppy I know, but I'm still tweaking around, then I thought to ask the crew.

And I'm about to step it up to make sure that if that result means we have to go into the previous month, then handle it appropriately which is a lot of fucking around.

Anything like this already exist in PHP land? Help the newbie.

Code: Select all

$now = time();
// How many days since last Monday
$daysSince = date('w', $now) - 1;
$lastMondaysDate = $now - ($daysSince * 86400);
// Format date as you wish. e.g.
echo(date('d/m/Y', $lastMondaysDate));
I just whipped it up real quick. Didn't test. May have syntax errors, and perhaps even dud logic. Give it a test and see what you reckon.

Quick FYI with the above code. If today is Monday then $daysSince will evaluate to zero, so it should still give you expected result.

couldn't put it better - might be worth extending into a function too, if you use it a lot within your code base.

Proud coder here. Java, C#, Python (and Jython), XSL, SQL, HTML, Javascript, VBScript, VB, C++, Delphi, et cetera

Jython is my favourite language. Its python that runs under the java runtime, with access to all its functionality. Its the fucking bomb i tell you.

P/Jython is the best language, partly because of the way it handles lists and dictionaries as basic types. Its also way easy to read and sexy too.

I had never played with Jython, to be honest, until you mentioned it. my last encounter with a variant on this type was JPython, way back when.

looks interesting. :)

(I spend far too much time inside PHP/Ruby these days, let alone the CSS hand-tooling. bring on CSS-3 and the dynamic selectors.)

jython is kinda cool, but aside from pathological shell scripts (I once pointed a script that took a list of files, ran sed over those, multiple times, fed the result of those sed scripts into another enormous regexp, at the X tree, and committed the result. something like 13,000 lines of diff.) I haven't wandered into anything higher up than C for quite a while now.

it's really refreshing when you don't have to write your own linked list handling, etc, for the millionth time.
