For our servers at work, I'm currently going with record labels.
- bedrock
- institution
- distinctive
- electrofly
freedesktop.org servers are Penny Arcade characters:
* tycho (used to be LDAP server, now just disused)
* gabe (main project server, soon to be email only)
* fruit (main LDAP server)
* kemper (soon to be cvs/svn/git master)
* annarchy (soon dev shell machine, main web host, anoncvs, viewcvs, gitweb)
For my machines, DJ Shadow. The ThinkPad X40s are endtroducing (new), and ephemera (old; Excessive Ephemera is the title of CD2 on Endtroducing.....). The T43 is preemptive (Strike), my main desktop is brainfreeze, and I also have (One Night In) bangkok and (The Private) repress kicking around. I've used product (Placement) and intune (and On Time) before.
Former naming schemes include characters from MegaTokyo (I was younger and more stupid, and it was vastly funnier at the time). My last job had penguins (chinstrap, emperor, humboldt), and Antarctic research stations (mawson, mcmurdo, a bunch of Russian ones). Ironically, this meant that Ubuntu's main gateway at the data centre was called gentoo.
Job before that, we used a mix of gods and whatever sprung to mind (velox, vesuvius, zaphod).
