Favourite Melbourne Venues?

Post by sweetcheeks »

Name your favorite places to go to for gigs if you're interested. The places you think have good in-house sound systems, great decors, best vibe, you name it!

when Public Office has all open for a big event, love the vibe.
Palace is wicked, despite lack of good bar service, but as a big venue can be dope.
Prince bandroom works well.

Went to PlayPen for the 1st time on Friday. Interesting. must be a 300/ 350 person venue, with a small side room. Sound lacked though.

Best venues were Dome and Chevron.

Public Office doesn't have in-house sound, but it is a great venue!

Then again, Citizen Smif's views are probably spot on (ie, none of the systems are that hot!).

Bring back the Laundry I say, just needs it's system to be fixed up. Change of management has already happened from what I hear.

Other joints of note: Seven (honestly, can we get some good music back in there - perfect for breaks or some liquid DNB), Mercat X (upstairs - especially in summer), POW, Espie, The Vulve etc....

Playpen is nice

Word up on the palace front DBoy.... I'd love to see a big Breaks or DnB party there. I dig F4, the sound there is seriously awesome.

Defo big on Public Office. A great versatile venue with a nice feel.

I actually really like Brown Alley downstairs part (especially for Sunny).

I seem to remember going to parties at Palace where it opened up into a whole other room out the back too. So you could basically have a small festival there.

:scr1pt:

When I saw Pappa there the sound was fantabuloustic, although they did bring in extra

However, the layout kinda shits me. Soooo much stuff to trip over. The floor has steps everywhere, and theres all these weird angles. Felt like I was in a skate park/indoor rock climbing centre.

Plus F4 came across to me as a sort of "people go there every week regardless venue" as opposed to "people go there depending on whats on venue"

but hey, maybe I should just shut up. or maybe go lie down. or maybe ride a tri-cycle across the intersection of Collins and Swanston backwards whilst balancing a plate of lamingtons on my nose and singing "like a virgin' into a McDonalds hot apple pie.

That's 2 Ringwood mentions in 2 seperate threads. It's spreading, I tell ya...

Oh, yeah! My favorite venue for gigs (as a punter or DJ) is still Revolver Backroom. Love the vibe, sounds good for the style of music played in there and the memories...oh, the memories!!!! Croft also kicks it upstairs or down, Laundry was the shiznit...let's hope the new owners change the clientele back.

Wouldn't really call it a club mate, nor a pub - or a private venue.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Platform One.

It rocks.

PoW aint bad either these days since they renovated (no pole-action in the middle of the dancefloor!)

Geddes Lane - Sure it's dank, but dank doesn't bother me. Lot of good times in that place :)

Word Events Warehouse - I like it, some people think it's not 'dirty' enough, but seriously, wtf. They have Hoegaarden on tap people! ON TAP!!!
Little did I know, and even less did I care.

Can't stand the Platform.

Terrible design - most likely coz it was never meant to be a nightclub.

Mind you, I haven't been there for a good 1-2yrs.

It's much better now. The music goes down the "windtunnel" not across.

Not many (if any?) places are designed to be clubs sadly.

Yeah I've been there with the music facing down, but still found it a stupid design.

Clubs much, much longer than they are wide - WTF?

Most people are pushed wayyyyy down the back - sound bounces around like a MF (unless the joint's full), best sound is up the front and it's a bitch to get from the front to the back with a full club.

Not enough seating.

Just my opinion though - I know some people love the place!

not sure about Word - funny acoustics and it doesn't lend itself space wise to a good rave out ... but it has potential.

f4 blows chunks IMO. good sound system (you really cannot go wrong with nexo) but the set up on the decks is horriffic. the vibrational problems are intense. really needs looking at.

word is great as a bar, love it and love the management. love the food. great place in winter in front of a fire or in summer in the courtyard when they play astroboy on the projector. but not as a rave venue.

Billboards is fucking KING. wikkid sound system run by a very good tech, great layout, great bar access, shonky security but you cant have everything, good stage, great dj set up, good lighting rig etc etc. it rocks. Pity they NEVER allow anything but house in there any more. wankers.

the Metro re fit should be finished very soon. a much larger version of the system used in Geddes lane for Evol Intent was being flown while I was in there before the Evol Intent set up (big ass nexo rig, floor stacked subs, flown low- mids and mid- highs) plus refit of venue itself. looking forward to seeing it. Plus the venue hire is surprisingly cheap.

never get it but... A Bar Called Barry has installed new specially designed ceiling mounted speakers. these are down firing and the off axis noise is extremely low. so the dancefloor can be ROCKING and a few meters away you can comfortably have a conversation at normal to low volumes. Best I have seen of its kind.

but my money is ALWAYS on the HiFi. I now a lot of DnB crews like to bring in there own sound which i totally do not get. It started when the one of the previous sound guys was there and he did not use the in house to its full potential and did not understant the requirements of anything but rock. But that system is a Meyer Sound Labs system. Meyer are THE premier sound system company in the world. Bar none end of argument, say what you want about ANY audio company and not only did Meyer come up with the basis of their new fnagled technology but they did it ten years ago. One of the only privately owned anachroic chambers in the world belongs to Meyer. Anyway, the in house system is the balls and the in house sound tech rocks, not only is he a good tech but he trusts me enough to leave the venue if i am bought in as a tech, which i love. Its only issue is the vibration in the stage, but the theatre bars mean you can easily fly the console. I've done it there many times. Hi Fi OWNS.
