Can someone please recommend me some jazzy breaks?

Post by Spicy »

Hey peepz, can I ask for some breakbeat help?

I'm after some jazzy breaks that sound a little on the darker tip too. Something along the lines of Landslide - The Jupiter Effect (click for mp3) - so it's somewhat like breaky nu-jazz with a darker bassline.. well whatever, anything that sound similar.

Any labels? Artists? Tracks?

Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers! (I posted on ITM but thought i'd try you guys as well cos .. well Melbourne people fuckin rock!)

try and get hold of any of the "re-birth of cool" compilations :)

I've got some more recommendations but I have to wait 'til I get home, I don't have the names stored in my brain-ram.....

If you love dark, jazzy eclectic beats, then look no further than RAW DEAL! On of my favorites and you can find their remixes on tons of stuff if you dig through the cheap bins. Actually, just found one of their remixes a few weeks back for a fiver...radness.

Here's a description of one of the CD's on sale at Amazon...

...Funk/breakbeat. Raw Deal, AKA Jim Robins, Delivers his Follow Up to Last Year's Self-titled Debut Release. The 'sky High' EP Layers Funked-up Percussion Over Psycopathic Brass Whilst Pulling Dark, Twisted Basslines Out of Jazz Grooves.

Sounds like something you might like.

my god that sounds cool! Landslide own!

It might be hard finding other nu-jazz with darker basslines tho.. dont think theres much out there.

The Future Sound of Jazz series have some dope worth checking tho.

hey spicy iv got one track in mind thats 'dark' and growling with jazzy overtones and instuments sax etc thats really rad.

its DJ Naga - Die Rhythmen Ein and has Flack Su and Si Begg remixes whcih are both worth checking out. The original has a clean broken beat jazzy section as a mid section taht is good as well.

Its on Chi Recordings CHI012

actually just read your post - this is more breaksbeat with jazz rarther than jazz with dark bits.

wooop, thanks or the feedback! i checked out some raw deal but so far have found no breaks, only 4x4.. even though that dj naga track was fucking awesome nevertheless but no jazz? don't worry nic breakbeat with jazz is exactly what i want ..

future sounds of jazz seems promising, as a few tuntes from the various re-birth of cool compos..

by the way, didn't LTJ do some kinda jazzy breaks? or was it all more towards DnB?

You mean play a 45 on 33.3??

'Up All Night' actually sounds fantastic on 33.3 (sans the vocals  )

Also one of my favourite cd's to listen to at work or anyway for that matter ::

Kabanjak Meets Protassov - Grow
"Grow" is definitely full pulp juice; smooth and sweet, with lots of chunky bits. It's heavy on mellow breaks, makes excellent use of Latin guitar, and jazz influences, serves up a little funk and hip-hop, has nice feminine drops, and finishes off with warm, cinematic strings. Grow is a combination of tracks by Kabanjak and Protassov who also lay down two cuts featuring Jungle Brothers. Point blank, this is one of the most vital downtempo releases of 2005.

Rhibosome self titled album has a bit of everything and defo a broken beat/jazz feel

house, breakbeat, drum & bass, dub, hip hop, nu-jazz, and afro-latin grooves..

these dudes no longer play which is a shame because they were fucking awesome live but at least i have this album which is still one of my faves

Take Me To The Mardi Gras - Bob James

Best jazzy break EVER. Sampled for Run DMC's Peter Piper and about a million others.
