Need a new digi camera :P

will spend up to $700-$800

Need something around 4MP, decent optical zoom, big flash or at least supports additional flash, good battery life, fairly light weight.

Anyone got any recommendations (not Sony though)?

pentax optio s5. $580 odd. best non-slr digibo camera, imo. 5 megapx.

big ass screen on the back. no flash but, you'd prolly have to save up for an slr if you really wanted the flash unit part.

yep.

definitely the pentax optio...

i got the s5i a couple of weeks back before i went o/s sq.

i love it!

5 megapix. it's a tiny camera too - easy fit in the pocket. ;)

to get the ixus in a 5 megapix the actual size of the camera is huge!

i'll bring mine over on the weekend if you want and you can check it out?

It depends on how big you want your pictures to be.I personally think limiting yourself to <= 3mp would turn around and bite you an the arse later on down the track.

Digital SLRs are ideally the way to got but for $700-$800 I'd recommend something like this:

Image

$789 RRP
6 Megapixel
6x Optical Zoom

single lens reflex, or basically, you look through the lens, and not a viewfinder like most cameras.

SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex

It's a style of camera where what is in the viewfinder is exactly what will be on the image if you depress the shutter (more pertinent to film cameras as most digicams do this now anyway).

The other benefit of SLR is interchangeable bayonet lenses, meaning you can switch from a normal lens, to a telephoto, to a fish eye, to whatever.

EDIT - This forum scares me with how active it is sometimes...

i was thinking about the Olympus C-770.

4MP, 10x optical zoom, hot shoe for flash gun, 1.8" LCD, MPEG movie recording with sound, include 128MB XD card, only 280 gm's

Can get a deal for around $500 incl my tax back..

4MP isn't that much these days, SQ. that said, if it weighs only 280gm that's gonna be great for travel.

I love shooting in RAW format though, so I have to load up on memory cards all the time. :|

got one two days ago (birthday close to christmas, so combined present). it seems to be pretty good; ui isn't too bad, features are nice. takes some good shots. dunno about battery life (sister went to wilsons prom on boxing day and couldn't find hers, so I lent her mine), but everything else seems fine. a very good mid-to-high-range non-slr digicam afaict.

I'm thinking of getting a new camera.

I want something that's reasonably versatile so I can take happy snaps or adjust settings for more arty shots but I don't wanna spend a grand on an SLR.

Can anyone come up with a better idea than Canon PowerShot A620 for around $500?

sea&sea underwater houseing for the Canon Eos series. You've got total control of all functions :love4: My brother in law has a canon EOS 300, I wonder if I could buy the case and just use his :).

I have one of these babies

Image

real oldschool 70s style. She needs some repairs, but I'm not willing to pay for it because you really NEED digital for underwater. Each film you might get one or two shots that are usable because it's fucking near impossible to take a good photo when you are floating around like a clumbsy git, trying to look through the viewfinder with a mask on, being quick enough to set up the appeture, focus, flash setting and angle before your subject gets scared and fucks off. A descent digital with nice automatic settings would be so awesome for underwater.

I've got this little cheapo
Image

the photos are rubbish though, it is suposed to be 3.5 megapixel but looks like a fucken webcam. Can't really use the flash underwater either, to close to the lense. It's good for fucking around though, it's tiny. I just keep it on me incase there is something really cool, but the photos look like shit.

I really need to start earning good money so I can play with toys more..

so i've been looking around at a few cameras and am completely confused. had a look at a few of the recommendations here, then realised the thread was a couple of years old...update time! i'm wanting to get camera happy while i'm in europe/morocco, but will find it a little tricky sans camera.

looking for something that's light weight, good battery life, 6+MP, decent zoom etc... (i know naff all about this stuff to be honest)

don't have a whole lot of money to spend, so don't want to go much more than $400 if i can help it. a big ask perhaps.

i've never used ebay before, and that's probably where i'll get the best deal...but for some reason it scares me.

help!

Look at the Panasonic Lumix range, sounds about right for your needs. I use the FX-7 as my backup digital when I can't be arsed lugging my Canon SLR around.

It's a really nice affordable little camera.

the Nikon Coolpix range is good too - the S6/7/8/9 is very well priced and has a huge LCD screen. very light and good results in most lighting conditions.

good bang for the buck, along side the Lumix range.

eBay is definately worth considering for purchasing the cam, but you really want to do you ground work and play with one first before you go out and buy one.

yep. go somewhere where you can play with a bunch of em. test out the one you want, see if it has any showstoppers for you (e.g. if it takes a hell of a long time between pressing the button and shutter actually firing), see if you like it. don't just put the cash down blindly. (unless you get a coolpix and it turns out to be made of awesome and then you think i'm rad and an oracle. that's okay.)

Deb and I use the FX7.

I cannot reccomend the Lumix series enough!
We upgraded after using my mums dcm04 for years (and she got sick of us borrowing it all the time)

we have always got our prints done at harvey norman and they still come up looking perfect!

I cannot reccomend this camera enough, the sound quality of video grabs shits all over other cameras, it has a leica lens and I leica it a lot.

zing.

buy one.
now.

also we bought ours at OFFICEWORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

and saved about 200 bucks, which made it better in some weird way.

office works.
lumix.
standard.

Maybe consider one of these..
http://canon.com.au/products/cameras/di ... tS3is.aspx

It's not pocket small, but has a good zoom. I like the flip out screen too.

There is a model above with less zoom, more MP and a hot shoe.

Do people know if it would be worth buying the EOS400D instead of the 350D (which lots of you seem to use). There seems to be only a few hundred dollars in difference.

I'm not sure if i really need the newest model, but then again, for a few hundred i might as well. What do people think?

Dont think there isa huge difference between the two, I think there 400d is 10mega pixels and the 350 is 8mega pixels and i think the 400d as a 2.5 inch lcd screen rather than 2inch which can be quite helpful.

Check dpreview.com for reviews.
I would buy from this guy. Cheapest around and based in Melb too. I got a new lens from him at close to half retail price!

the 400D has an integrated cleaning system (as well as a bunch of other features), but you lose the spot metering of the 300D.

it's worth going for the upgrade, if you can afford it.

If I was you I'd consider getting the D80. It's got some bits and pieces that put it above the 400D.

Whatever you do, don't get a camera and lens kits. Just get the camera body and buy a decent lens to go with it.
