system & Arrbee, I was responding to this. I'm put off by the idea that face to face contact will be replaced by networking communication. Call me old school...The Mixtress wrote:Aren't you?? Better than TV IMO.ArrBee wrote:The Mixtress wrote:The internet rocks, no question. I'm on it all day and every day. It has it's place, but it's not a replacement.
how do you find the time to be on the net "all day every day" and not have it replace anything?
Were you doing nothing at all previously?
I'd be interested with the ppl who think it's sad etc....
Is it the environment that is sad, or the way people use it, or the fact the people use it at all?

TV is a void. I have been without for 1.5 years now and, apart from the occasional House night at my man's place it forms no part of my life. The problem I have with TV versus second life is that the former is pretty much a one-way medium. There are no debates, minimal interaction and you are told you want cup-a-soup, big brother is back and OH BOY, Gretel has a new stylist.
As far as I can see it, virtual worlds are an extention of the intrinsic need for people to interact. Homo sapiens is a social creature and debate and social interaction win my vote over the drug of a nation any day of the week.

I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

I ain't worried H-bomb, I'm just following everyone's lead and discussing the possibilities.
As I said a ways back, I don't care if people wanna spending their lives on the net having a second, third, twenty fifth life. But once it crosses over to mainstream and starts effecting me, I'll be fighting the system.
I like using my voice to talk to people. I've been told it's shexy

I've read analyses of modern culture that mention this same fact... that the biggest influence on communication and society hasn't been the intranerd but rather the tepholome.

Nah, I reckon I got your point. I just wanted to give you pause to think about the way you made that point
You might even come to the conclusion that the internet has replaced some things for you.
There is no doubt in my mind that it has. You're right. But I'll never allow it replace meaningful lingering looks or a soft and warm embrace.ArrBee wrote:The Mixtress wrote:You missed my point ArrBee...ArrBee wrote:

Thats the story! nothing wrong with that approach.
Just remember though... Some ppl get their "warm embrace" and "linguring looks" in virtual town because thats where they have found them. And thats ok too!
hehehehe.
There is no reason to think you wouldn't still use your voice when communicating on line. Hell, even your eyes and ears are used now.
It's not a big leap to imagine other senses coming online in the future.
Phwoar. not like that ya dirty buggers...

dude, that's what they were saying about vrml in the early 90s. virtual shopping malls!Stray wrote:I can sell 3d items on a webpage too.
It's just doing the same things you can do via the web but in a 3d environment. Tell me it's different.
i guess the only difference was a resounding failure to care when it was like a web browser (i.e. content is delivered to you), and a huge uptake when people could get down with their virtual honeys on new years' eve.
yep! i have one, but i've literally turned it on ... twice? three times? didn't have one at my previous place, so i guess it's been about 3 years now. i use bittorrent to keep track of family guy, scrubs, spooks, top gear, and am just starting to get into heroes. (as well as peep show and green wing.) but the difference is that i don't sit there, bored of my skull, surfing for ages. if i want to watch something, i just watch it, i don't spend half my life watching kerri-anne because there's nothing better on.system wrote:three years+ now! so good (and the intatubes let me download specific programs if I want to watch them).C.I.A. wrote:TV is a void. Peepshow is awsome!
We still watch tele. Sometimes in a mindless way. But for me it pretty much stays on abc and sbs.
if there's nothing interesting, thats when the xbox goes on to play torrents from the network.
It's great how some content is being ripped in AC3. Now, if only the xbox1 could handle hidef.

I dont understand how this could be much different that counter strike or another internet based interactive game. Sure it's more male based in CS, but theyre both addictive and relitavely harmless
The rubber plant was surprised. If the rubber plant could have spoken, it wouldn't have said anything. That's how surprised the rubber plant was.
I heard a story this morning on the radio that a girl went in to check it out and a character went straight up to her and did the whole "Alexxxx wants to be your friend" thing. She clicked on him as a friend, went to bed and woke up with 15 emails from the guy.
