I mistakenly got Christian Bale's new release, 'Harsh Times' out on the weekend.... Absolutely disgraceful, to the point that I turned it off before it ended... I had high hopes for Mr. Bale, having put him into the Ed Norton league - but this movie was utter shite. Very badly written, and not a role he should have ever accepted.... BAD! Harsh Times indeed.
Tell me about it Mixie - I'm a massive Ed Norton fan, but Bale in Batman, American Psycho, The Machinist etc is awesome.... no Ed Norton, but he was approaching that status for me.
Storyline (if you could call it that) is centered around Bale's character (an ex-Ranger) trying to fit into civilian life following a tour of duty in the middle east as a killer.
Applying for law enforcement jobs, getting knocked back by the LAPD. Cruising LA with his buddy getting fucked up, jacking people, witnessing murders etc... he's losing the plot fast....
In the end everything goes wrong - he flips out (badly) and threatens to kill those close to him, that's when I switched it off.
It's bad. One of those movies that you know is bad from the intro.

The shorts for it were on constantly when I was OS...

He starts to find patterns in everything... circles every 23rd word in the book, reveals hidden messages, does classic schitzophrenic stuff. It looks like the kind of film that leaves you wondering as the plot unfolds as to whether it is in his mind or it is something more sinister.
Can't wait.

Blade RunnerThe people over at Dark Horizons have some very fascinating news today. Twenty five years after its theatrical release, new scenes were shot for Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner“.
Fans have been clamoring for Scott’s “final cut†of the film, his true definitive version of the sci-fi epic rather than the so-so 1992 “Director’s Cut†which Scott has publicly stated he was unhappy with.
Though work began in 2000 on the disc set, legal issues and other factors have delayed it for years. Then late last year it was confirmed that the film would be finally coming out in a massive multi-disc box set sometime in the second half of 2007 to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
This week actress Joanna Cassidy, famous for playing the Replicant Zhora in “Blade Runnerâ€, released the following comment on her official site:
“Joanna has just finished re-shooting her scenes from the original BLADE RUNNER movie. Joanna is wearing her original outfit (which she kept over from the first production). These new scenes will be part of the upcoming special BLADE RUNNER DVD re-release. Check back for more details.â€
For all Blade Runner fans around the world (and there is plenty…) this must be like Christmas. I must say the dedication and the outside-the-box strategy when deciding to shoot new scenes to a 25 year old movie is amazing. I applaud the people behind this decision.

I watched Flower Of Flesh And Blood from the Japanese 'Guinea Pig' series last night. Truly the product of an evil mind. Undoubtedly the most vile and sickening horror (if you could even call it a horror) film i've ever seen. I've got a strong stomach, but I almost regret having watched this. Almost.

feels a hell of a lot like cube to me. and i love cube.
claustrophobic, with all the alienation that comes from isolation and a very unfamiliar environment. all the tension between the various characters, who need to pull together to get out of there. plus, well, the whole gruesome death thing, and the effect that has on the relationships (played out far more in cube than sunshine, obviously).mecka wrote:it had that same claustrophobic feel that cube had innit?

watched Brick the other night on DVD
This is one unusual film. Moody detective story ala 40's Chicago/NYC style replete with dancing girl burlesque personas, underworld figureheads, and semi gangster lingo but set in a modern day suburban american high school background. Yes you read all that right.
All in all this film is masterful. Complex. Brooding. Bizarre. The way they have translated the Chicago/NYC detective story into the chosen background is nothing short of brilliant. Bent cops become Vice Principals, Dancing girls become Drama class afficiando's. Superb, superb concept. And of course what detective story would be complete without the seductress who turns out to be nothing but trouble for our more than one time loser hero.
I'm actually still yet to decide whether I like this film, as a film, ie actually enjoyed watching it. But I must say I take my hat off to the way in which they have done it. From a pure concept and visual perspective this movie is so good, but I think its going to take multiple sittings to actually get it or at least get what I can out of it.
But thats enough spoiling. I simply urge you to get it out and watch it yourself. If your a fan of the detective story concept then I think you will find this move exhilarating based on the ideas alone.
Is on new release but I think its been out for a little while. I got this at Video Busters in Collingwood (huge selection) so you may have trouble finding it at your local.
